  1. Thanks Bob I'm gonna give you all a call. Here is a picture of the machine
  2. This is a quick easy one I made up at the station Sunday night waiting for a radio pouch to dry. The IAFF logo is burned in using a custom stamp I just got in.
  3. Well I'd say you excelled at "trying", great stuff!
  4. I found a National A-288 and believe it's the the same as a Singer 288. Problem is I can find no info on either machine anywhere. thanks for any info
  5. I'd say your joining many of us that this started as a hobby and then got expensive rather quickly. So you could spend $400 for a basic rig, or a lot more for a custom. Where's the fun in that? After all for your hard earned money you'll only have something. If you take that same money and buy the tools and learn the craft you'll have learned so much, you'll have created something and have the tools n knowledge to do other things. The best part is when someone asks where you got your rig you can say "I" made it instead of giving them someone else's name.
  6. I'm still pretty new myself and it can be overwhelming on where to start, you can get by pretty easy and cheap if you going after the picture you posted. Look to see if you have a leather store near by or a craft store to pick up the basics. For the project in your picture you could grab a couple precut and finished pieces, some thread and needle.
  7. I'm sorry you had to get out of leatherwork as you obviously are very talented at it. Rally appreciate you putting up the patterns.
  8. Up until now I had been using a utility knife to do my cutting which I could never get the clean cuts I wanted. So I picked up a Vergez Blanchard 125mm round knife as my first. Out of the package the blade felt really sharp. So I put it to work on some 8oz leather scrap free handing some straight lines and skiving some edges and it was the easiest I've ever cut leather. I can't believe I didn't buy one sooner.
  9. So since the cold decided to arrive finally in Ohio. I've had to move my work area from the barn to the basement. The basement is fine most of the year but being 100+ yrs old it has moisture problems in the spring. I know storing the leather in the basement would likely cause issues such as mildew or mold. So the only really solution I came up with is to lay it flat on some cardboard and slide it under the bed in the spare room(hardwood floors). Shoul I expect any problems with storing my leather this way?
  10. That's quite cool, although I highly doubt any relation as my name spelling only goes back to my grandfather (long story)
  11. Make your own Figure out what you want to put in it/how much stuff with room to spare. Get some poster board make a mock up, make changes as needed and remake the pattern with seam allowance if needed.
