So tonight I was working on two separate notebook covers 5oz leather, one dyed turquoise and the other was grey(heavily diluted black dye) had both to the color I wanted. I wanted to dye the interior darker black for the grey and medium brown for the turquoise. The problem was the darker dye bled through to the front on both pieces. does anyone know how to prevent this?

I will add my experience with dying using the pro dye, like you I had some issues with streaking and problems with color control with brown, purple, turquoise( all that I've used so far). so I on a hunch used some dye diluter with a little bit of dye and applied multiple coats to get the color/darkness I wanted and evenness of the dye job. Takes some experimenting but I've had success with it.

As a firefighter I see a couple possible issues, as stated above thickness maybe an issue as a radio strap is designed to be worn under the coat to protect the mic cord from heat, ability to clean the strap the environment we wear our straps in is filled with carcinogens and a non sealed leather will absorb them more easily (with a solid strap I can scrub it down with cleaner and then oil it). Lace on the radio pouch I see no issue with and using colored lace would add a nice touch to the front, lace on the back may create a wear/rub issue. If it's something you want to still try I say go for it.

Very nicely done, having the tech sure makes that look pretty quick.

First holster and some practice pieces
Fire88 replied to USAFK9's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
You've got the basics down pretty darn good, one thing that I see on every piece is your beveling is uneven where your moving it too far between strike or your strikes aren't a consistent force, also looks like you may not be holding it vertical. Keep having fun and practicing. -

Sewglow is it, unfortunately my pictures don't look as good on my phone as theirs. It does glow well and I'm impressed by it. Yes I hand stitched using black tiger thread and cris crossed the glow in between each stitch. I used grommets in the ends under the shield with elastic cord.

Looks really good and that patch works, if that happens again do the same on the other end.

I don't remember where I got it, i bought it several months ago and am just now using it. The green is angelous paint. If it melts I'm honestly in way more trouble than worrying about it. They have been used for years to hold cut nails and door chocks as it keeps them handy and easy to get to. The tube itself is either from a tractor or truck tire and is quite thick about the same as 8oz leather. Thank you

Made myself a band for my fire helmet backed it with an old inner tube, stitched with 1.0 Rita thread and glow in the dark thread cross crossed at every stitch.

I'm not a big OWB carry fan at least in the summer but that brown one makes me rethink that idea. Great work!!! -
Very very nice work!

Nice work!!! Very simple and well executed -
This one I didn't mark out at all and my awl was too big for my thread size as I forgot my others at the station. I will watch some of their videos. Thank You we all start somewhere.

Here a couple more pics, I need to burnish the edges on it. A couple things I want to tweak on it like the placement of the clip needs to be further to the right and the clip attachement needs stitches vertical into the holster as well as the horizontal line. Next version I'll add an extra layer at the opening as a stiffener.

I don't make it up that way much but I will definitely do if I get up that way. I'm down in southwest Ohio west of Dayton. I would love to find someone local to learn more from.

I'm not all that experienced but I agree with CaptQuirk that 5-6oz should be good.

Fantastic work!!! -
My first attempt at making a holster. I like the overall fit but I need to tweak the belt clip location I think. With the clip I'm using I. An tuck my shirt in if needed. Any suggestions critique would be appreciated.
