I have no idea what finishes if any have allergens, I have worked with leather for over 60 years and have never broke out, got allergys, or any other harm from leather or any of the finishes nor have I ever had anyone ask me about allergens from leather or the finishes on them! If someone is that concerned about I’ll effects of leather they probably need to be vegan and stick with cloth, metal or plastic!
-
I would say yes leather is safe to wear! Do you wear leather shoes? Use any finish you prefer! I like tan-cote! Lots of people swear to resolene others like super sheen, clear-lac, saddle-lac, wyo-sheen, angelus and others. Some finishes work better on items that flex or bend others not so good. Some only use an oil for a top coat others a wax, so to say what is best to use it’s kind of to each his own,

I use a Barry King with a #2 blade, several different blade sizes are available along with different size haft. Hope this helps. Rodney

Thanks Chuck, I appreciate the kind words! I was just trying to pass on my recommendations from 60+ years of leatherCrafting. I meant no offense to any person or country just stating my opinion from years of experience and using many different brands of stamping tools. If that hacks someone off so be it but personally I don’t care if it pisses off the Queen!

Hey go ahead and make some things, the basket stamps you have will work fine, get good working with what you have then upgrade when you can, learn the craft then get better equipment like anything else! I made a lot of things using the same tools you have in the past. It’s beginners type tools as Tandy’s tools have been for years and will probably continue to be. Don’t be concerned to much about the tools until you learn the basic craft, enjoy your new found hobby it can last a lifetime! Enjoy Rodney

I agree with Bill, upgrade when you see you are going to stay with the hobby, buy the best you can afford, you can always get most if not all your money back! Craftool Co. marked tools with just a number are usually the better craftool and early ones, then Craftool Co. with a letter before the number. Then Craftool Co. USA, the earlier the better in my experience! None of the craftool compare to the modern high end stamps such as Barry King, Robert Beard, Hackbarth, Wayne Jueschke, Etc. But they will get you experience and get you started, upgrade when you can. Rodney

I own Sergey, Barry King, Robert Beard, Wayne Jueschke, Hackbarth and others. Wayne Jueschke , in my opinion, makes the best basket stamp! That said all the above make very good stamps! Barry probably has the best choices of different styles and sizes, some are more expensive than others, but you get what you pay for. Buy the best you can afford and happy stamping! Thanks Rodney

Machine for wallets and lighter weight leathers and fabric?
Rhale replied to SouthernCross's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I use a 3200 for heavier stuff also and have a cowboy 0797 for lighter stuff and I love it, not advertised much but still available and very good machine! -
Personal preference, everyone likes different brands! If you can go to a show and try different brands and sizes it would help. Barry King is very good for the price! Robert Beard is one of the best but expensive! Henley is right up there with the Beard and a little less money. Chuck Smith is very good, Leather Wrangler is very good and priced about like the previous ones. Then you get into barrel sizes, most are 3/8, 7/16, or 1/2 inch. I prefer 3/8”. Blade sizes are about the same choices as barrel but you can get 1/4” and you can get straight or angled, and some offer regular or thin. I prefer 1/4” thin straight. You can get 1/8” angle which works well for detail and filigree work also. So now you should be real confused! Ha ha! I would start with a Barry King 3/8” barrel, 1/4” straight blade and go from there which is about $60 if you don’t have a way to try different makers and sizes! Just my opinion. Hope I didn’t confuse you to much. Best of luck with your carving and choice of swivel knives! Rodney

I dip dye about everything, it’s quick simple and pretty consistent color!

Depending on thread size I may be interested! What other tools and leather are you selling? Thanks Rodney
-
Sure, let’s move on! In Texas a mans word is his bond! If I tell you I will take $. For something and you agree to pay that price than it’s a deal! Evidently that’s not how it works in NY! Whoever wants to deal with this guy go ahead but it won’t be me!
-
You told me you would take $135 including. Shipping! I agreed so what’s the deal, are you backing out on the deal you made? You have my phone # . If you don’t want to accept the deal I will let everyone know you don’t hold up to your agreement! Thanks Rodney

I agree with chrisash , if you made the second picture rack it’s fantastic, I want one. Rodney

Welcome. Aboard! It’s nice to see you are going to carry on your fathers interests! There are a lot of nice and helpful folks on here and are usually very free with answers to questions and giving advice. I hope one of my sons will carry on my interests in leather someday. Best of luck to you! Rodney

WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE GIVE ME A DIRECT ANSWER TO MY QUESTIONS
Rhale replied to bryan4christ's topic in Member Gallery
Not only does it depend on what sells in your area the quality of your work will decide if your product will sell and for how much! As everyone else has said what sells in my area probably won’t sell in California and visa versa. Find out what sells where you are, make the highest quality product you can using the highest quality materials, price accordingly and if you have everything right it will sell, if it doesn’t then something you are doing isn’t right! Product? Area? Quality? Price? -
I believe Henley offers 2 different checkering while King only uses 1! I have a regular checkered Henley and it is a little finer checkering than Kings. Both are very good knives but the Henley blades seem to be better for my liking.
-
I tried one at a leather show, it would take some getting use to if you put the swivel blade on that end! It seems to be quality stuff and would probably be easier to adapt to if you hadn’t had years of using a regular swivel knife! That said you can swap the blade and yoke ends and use as a standard swivel knife!

IS THERE ANYBODY INTERESTED IN SINGER SEWING SEATS??
Rhale replied to bryan4christ's topic in Member Gallery
I would certainly like to see pictures! Any price yet? Thanks Rodney -
I also have a Henley knife I bought 2 or3 years ago. I can’t so enough good about it! I would rank it right up there with Robert Beard or any other high end swivel knife!
-
How much for all the thread and Horween? Can you post picture of the leather along with approx size or amount and weight! Thanks Rodney
-
I have a couple leather wrangler which are aluminum, they are very light weight and take some getting use to but I think alum. Would work fine. Yours looks great, are you going to make and sell any? If so I would be interested! Thanks Rodney
