Stubben Saddle Billets
DieselTech replied to TomE's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
Thanks. Heck someday I hope to build a saddle. Just so i can say I made one. I'm curious how many sides of leather it takes to build a saddle? Plus probably need multiple weights of leather as well.- 33 replies

Ordered a Cobra Class 26 : Couple questions
DieselTech replied to DieselTech's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Would something like this work? It is a swing away double fold binder. Or do I want a single fold binder? Also if this will work, what feet setup do I get? I can make a adapter/attachment bracket if needed. Thanks. -
Stubben Saddle Billets
DieselTech replied to TomE's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
Thanks TomE for giving me a small lesson in saddle construction. So is the white nylon webbing screwed or stapled to the base of the saddle pan? Lmao or is it called saddle tree? Thanks again for the detailed write up. At least I got a few pics to look back on if I ever see that type of saddle.- 33 replies

Ordered a Cobra Class 26 : Couple questions
DieselTech replied to DieselTech's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Kgg do you know which binder attachment I need to order & do you know from where I can order it? Amazon, sewing shop, I don't care as long as it is quality. Also if I want a 90° binder or I think some time they are referred to as a synchronized binder? Do you know what binder will work. Thanks. I appreciate your help. -
Stubben Saddle Billets

Tom that looks like a complicated process to repair. Way above my pay grade. So did you already repair this saddle or in the process of repairing. Thanks. Maybe I will learn something.- 33 replies

Ordered a Cobra Class 26 : Couple questions
DieselTech replied to DieselTech's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Yeah I was hoping to find the piping/welting feet a bit cheaper. LMC gets $50/foot. If I got no other option, then I'll pay the price for the LMC feet. I am really hoping to find a binding attachment for the class 26. Also like to find a rolled edge hemming plate & foot as well. Lmao after buying a class 4 & a class 26 I am trying to cheap out. Thanks. Much appreciated. -
Ordered a Cobra Class 26 : Couple questions
DieselTech replied to DieselTech's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
So apparently the cobra class 26 uses Singer 111w155 feet. Is this true? Or can anyone verify this? Thanks. -
With the big hole punches like 1/2" & bigger, the punch outs can be used under Sam Browne buttons. Well I guess all buttons in particular that have too long of shank. Or you what some reinforcement behind a button. There is other uses. I think Chuck Dorsett has a video on it.

Guys & gals I finally broke down & ordered me a Cobra class 26 for lighter projects & materials. I'm curious what feet this machine uses. I'm looking for a piping feet? I would also like to know what is the best option for edge binding? I think the other thing i am looking for is called a hemming set. Any & all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I might have got it backwards. I am just getting into machine sewing leather. Lmao I'm sure someone can explain this better.
-
I think the designation of the 16 & 17 denotes them for being fabric needles & leather needles. The cobra 26 calls for a 135x16 or a 135x17 If I got this right the 16 is a leather point needle for leathers. The 17 is a fabric or round point needle used for fabrics.

I would not remove it. I don't think you would ever save it trying to remove it. I myself would just re-glue it the way it is.

Manual Strap Cutter Machine: Opinions/Recommendations
DieselTech posted a topic in Leather Machinery
Guys & gals I would like to buy a strap cutting machine. Just curious if any of you have seen or used the TandyPro manual strap cutter. I'm curious if I can get by with it for a few years. Or is it junk? Is there a better china/import brand option out there? Thanks. Any & all help will be greatly appreciated. -
Thanks. I appreciate it. I pretty sure I have seen some of your saddles & they are just beautiful.
-
Thanks. Yeah I was looking at some rear flank billets from some higher end saddle makers. I was looking at their billets & @ them prices it is going to be hard to compete with their prices. Should I sew these billets together with 346 bonded polyester thread? Thanks.

Thanks TomE. I appreciate your feedback. I'll check out Bruce's video. Yeah Don Gonzales had a good video on preparing Latigo saddle lace for tying billets on with. Guess I better get some more leather ordered. Thanks. I appreciate you helping a newbie.
-
The other thing I'm curious about. What length of Latigo lace is used to tie your billets on with? I watched Don Gonzales video on tieing billets & it was real informative. Looks like he used a lace about 36" long & then cut the tails off when finished tied. Thanks.

My buddy does a bunch of roping cattle & uses a breastplate/collar strap as well. I think that's what he called it. To me it looks like on the original billet/strap, they used 14-16oz saddle skirting & lined it with 6-7oz or 9-10oz Latigo. Should I just order a Herman oak 9-10oz Latigo side. I would like to make a new matching set of billets for him. What would be a good buddy price on something like this? I'm not new to leather working, I'm just new to the horse tack saddle stuff & the nomenclature of it. Thanks. I appreciate everyone's help.

That looks real close. The billet that broke has a hoof pick pouch. Looks nice. I'm hoping mine turns out that nice. Thanks for sharing that billet. I like the gunslinger stitching.
-
The cinch strap are 1¾ wide & 9mm thick on this particular saddle. If that helps any. Looks like 2 layers on the strap.
-
Ok thanks. I got some stiff veg-tan saddle skirting & most other weights of veg-tan leather as well. What weight of Latigo side should I buy to line it with? I can purchase what I need. Do you got a recommendation? Thanks again for the help. It's much appreciated.
