  1. Hey There, First let me say thanks to all of the guys who have already posted threads about this topic. I am a full time firefighter here in Ma. I am also a custom pinstripes, sign painter and hand lettering guy. Do a lot of Gold and Silver leafing as we'll. I wanted to try my hand at making or painting custom leather fire helmet shields. With all of the information posted here I was thinking maybe it would be easier for me to post this and have a central location with all of the info. here as opposed to referencing multiple threads. So my questions is this: if all I want to do is paint shields. What do I need to know, what materials do I need and where do I start. If I want to make custom shields, same questions? Thanks in advance for your patience. FF JM
  2. Hello Leatherworkers, We've had some questions as to what our leather wrapped guitars sound like. We're posting a link to a youtube video we made a couple of years ago so everyone can hear our eL Welker leather guitars in action. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omt0SkERyhc Feel free to post your comments to this forum. Thanks!
  3. I just recently purchased an 8-9oz Hermann Oak double bend, for belts/straps, and it is very stiff, and will only get more stiff with the application of dyes. I know that the leather being as thick as that, it will only get to a certain amount of flexibility, but I would still like to make it more supple, if possible. Any suggestions? Thanks Zayne
  4. Hello everyone, I made a short video to show how I use my laser to engrave and cut leather. You can view it here http://youtu.be/VLSaYWZG2n0. Regards KN
  5. I am new to leatherworking. I bought a 6 oz side of discount Veg Tan from Tandy and a 4 oz Veg Tan shoulder. I have been working with them both, and while the shoulder quality doesnt seem too bad. The side could be better. The flesh side seems really uneven and full of long fibers. I don't know if thats a normal thing or not. I hear tandys leather isnt that great overall. I hear amazing things about horweens chromexcel, among others, but I'm assuming it is really expensive. I also have heard that springfeild has some decent leather. All in all, I want to buy some good quality leather without spending a ton of money for making belts, collars, wallets, key fobs, etc... What are some good suggestions? Thanks Zayne
  6. Hi, First of all I should say that I'm not a leather worker, and I've never worked with leather or anything similar. But this seems like a good place that may be able to answer my questions. I work in an office above a cobbler / key cutter in the UK. 2 or 3 times per day our office if filled with a very strong chemical / glue type smell. Which appears to be coming up through the floor boards. The last few works days it's been constant all day, and makes me very queasy. Our guess is it's the leather glue. We've written to the chains head office but they haven't replied. If knowing which UK chain it is helps I'll let you know. So my questions are, is this stuff safe to breathe in? Is the queasy feeling just because I don't like the smell, or is it something more dangerous? And also will I turn into one of these newspaper stories in 20 years time dying from lung disease / cancer? I know I haven't given much information to go on, and I may well be over paranoid, but thought you guys might have some insight. Thanks,
  7. I am in the process of designing a logo for my leatherwork. I will most likely have three different designs, for the first two, I have figured out that I want to hot stamp, so I will be purchasing through a company that will design them for me, and supply me with the appropriate heating device. But as for the other one, I want it relatively large, about 3 1/2 inches in diameter. How would I go about stamping leather with something that big, and have it be even? What would it be made out of? I really like the results from using heat to stamp leather, so I would prefer that method with this large stamp, if at all possible. Thanks Zayne
  8. I am new to leatherworking, and I was wondering what oz of leather do you usually use for your every day standard belt? I think the couple of belts I have made were from 6 oz leather. Is that too thin? I'll also probably be making some womens belts (the skinny kind), and some dog collars. Would I use the same thickness on all three, or should they be different oz? Or is it really just a matter of preference? Thanks Zayne
  9. Hello, I am about to dip dye several small pieces of leather and I am looking for a good way to dry them on some sort of shelf or rack. Does anyone have any good idea for a rack system of drying, say if you have to dry 100 small pieces and couldn't fill up all your tables? There must be some sort of plastic grating that allows airflow? Thanks!!
  10. Hi there... I've only really just gotten into leather working - I'm interested in celtic art, as well as being graphics designer, so it's an area I think I can really get into... I've so far completed one leather belt, I'm about to start on a knife sheath, and I have in mind to make a wallet after that...but thought I'd stop in and say Hi!
  11. I made my first wallet today, which is my second finished leather project to date. I designed It myself. I know it is nowhere near perfect, and I have learned a lot in the process, but I still have a few questions: Im pretty sure the reason why the dye on the edge transferred to the other side of the wallet on the inside is because I didnt do a final burnish with some gum trag (second picture). As far as I know that helps the dye from bleeding/transferring. Am I right? The wallet is really thick, probably because I used what I am assuming is around 3 oz leather (I dont have a thickness gauge, I should probably pick one up) It wont stay shut by itself. What oz leather do you think would be best for this style wallet? To finish the wallet, I applied a couple of coats of neatsfoot oil, then topped it off with 50/50 acryllic resolene (only on the outside), and then some obenaufs leather preservative(also only on the outside). However, I didnt do any of this until after I stitched it all together. Is that the recommended process, or should I have done something different? I dont really like the glossy looking finish you can see on the outside (you can see in the third picture). What do you think is giving it that look? I like leather that looks more satin than glossy. I also noticed the color on the backside has a slightly pinkish hue. Is there anyway to remedy that without using dye? I know, I ask a lot of questions. I am a perfectionist, and as you can probably guess, I am pretty frustrated with the outcome of this wallet. Thanks! Zayne
  12. Looking to learn. Looking to make my own clothing and pass the skill to others I believe this is my calling. No Tools, No knowledge, Just myself.
  13. Just a video for anyone that needs help understanding why some machines are just wrong for leather. It doesn't include the 441 clone, but Wiz has that covered in his sticky along with all this same info. I just added this video for those that need to learn visually. Hope this helps! Malik
  14. Hi people ! just wondering is it ok to layer leather ? EG: i want to try making a purse , i have 2-3 oz leather and i intend bonding two pieces together using contact adhesive to make 5-6ish oz leather will that be ok ? any body ever do that ? or is it just a bad idea ?
  15. Hi Everyone. I am new here, and have been working with leather for probably 20-years or more--mostly just using cowboy gear. My wife does carving and I do custom saddles and stamping. We are moving from Texas and have an almost new Sew Line GA5 head, table, 1725 clutch motor and bobbin winder all assembled and ready to go to work--asking $850.00 and used it maybe 10-times. We keep it oiled and in top shape--it is literally like new. We'd like to sell it as assembled and we live in Sealy, Texas--about 20-minutes west of Katy and 40-minutes west of the southern edge of Houston. This is a great machine with a huge shuttle hook, sharp adjustable height walking dogs that won't mar your tooling leather projects and we sewed up to 3/4" of heavy skirting with it and it did a superior job. I have lots of pictures if you are interested. My email is mikesuemoore@outlook.com and we are moving out of state in a couple weeks and would really like to see this very nice set up, go to someone who can use it. We bought it for our own tack needs and never did commercial work with it, which is why we only used it a few times. We ended up buying a huge upright stand up machine because it goes through about 1 1/4" of skirting which we needed for our saddle skirts--glued sheep's lining made for a bit much for this GA5. So it has never been abused or improperly used. You can also call me if you want and I'd be happy to answer any/all questions you may have. I am an ex-ranch cowboy, educated corrective Farrier and all around pain in the ass, but I am mellowing out with age and so my wife was the only woman to tame me--this is her machine. She does all the stitching. 979-885-7187 This is listed on Craig's List and we will sell to the first serious buyer--we can only help you load it because we are short on time--moving in a couple weeks. Thanks guys.
  16. Ello Ladies and Gents, I was wondering on a little input. I am new and starting a small Etsy shop and building up from there. This is one of the first items I will be listing. A very simple leather cuff with a stamped pattern, simulated stitching and a tiny bit of tooling(a couple in the pic are unfinished). What is a good and genuine price point to start these at? $10? $35? I have no idea. Any help is always appreciated! Thanks in advance -Ryan
  17. New to the forum. I am looking into purchasing a used sewing machine for making holsters. I found a used Consew 225 for 450.00. Any advise is appreciated. I have an old Singer 477 and know it wont handle it!
  18. Greetings from the 'burgh! I've been dabbling in leatherwork for a couple years, more seriously working since last May. Started as just making hackjob gun holsters because buying them is so expensive. Then got into making wallets, notebook covers, knife sheaths, etc after finishing college last spring. Can't find any good pictures of my sheaths or holsters at the moment, but here's a sampling of stuff I made for the family for Christmas. Please feel free to share any critiques, I've learned all I know from observing other work on here or the web so advice is greatly appreciated!
  19. Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I was checking out a bag at colsenkeane.com, and the leather that he used to make the bag was smooth on both sides, about 10oz, and stiff. I've been wanting to make a leather basket, and I was thinking this type of leather might be a possibility, but I have know clue what kind of leather it is or where to find it. Is it something that the maker does to the leather or is it tanned this way? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ed
  20. I am starting to make dog collars and leashes and would like a recommendation on a sewing machine that could help me accomplish this task without going broke purchasing one. I will be working with leather, mil spec nylon webbing, seat belt material, and biothane. I would like to be able to do 2 ply leather, 2 to 4 ply nylon webbing, and 4 ply seat belt collars. I would need a machine that could handle this and not need constant repair in doing so. I would also need to be able to stich along edges with ease. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Al
  21. I have been searching for the ways of how one can boost their leathercraft work more and let others know about the work you did and what you are offering. And I guess this is the right place. Borlino is the name where I make leather bags with the finest Italian leather of Buffallo and Vanchetta. With my craftsman we know what the people want but how to get them is what I am here to learn. Please give suggestions for the leather business. You can see some of my bags below :-
  22. Hi everyone, I came across Saddlebackleather's thin briefcase. MY GOODNESS it is beautiful! Especially the tobacco colour. http://media.saddlebackleather.com/image/upload/w_1280,h_1280,c_fill/01-10-0002-MD-TO-NP-C-01-1900.jpg http://www.saddlebackleather.com/briefcasethin?sc=8&category=301406 I read on the site that they only use full grain leather, but when I asked some of my friends they told me there's no way full grain leather can be made to look like that. They also told me there's no way full grain can be made to look or stay as rigid as Saddleback briefcase. Anyone here knows what kind of leather is used for the tobacco? Appreciate if anyone here can advise. Thanks!
  23. Hi All Have been reasonably successful with A5 notebook covers recently. This is one using a free design I downloaded - so no credit for that! Nothing earth shattering, but trying to build my skills & improve on overall finishing of projects.
  24. So I have been looking for a hide that I can make belts and will dye really nicely with black, mahogany, dark brown, etc. Any info would be awesome! Thanks! Austyn
