Just moved to Toronto from the US recently and have been looking for a source for exotic leathers, specifically alligator/croc/python. Many online retailers from the US will not ship to Canada unless you place a large order due to all the paperwork involved. Does anyone know of an exotic leather supplier already in Canada, or of a supplier overseas who will deal in small quantities? Thanks in advance.

After the bag, decided to make something small in the name of instant gratification . Made a narrow ‘double tour’ bracelet, with: some scrap glazed croc from @Lee05 (thanks!) some great HAAS calf in smooth black from @nstarleather (beautiful quality as always) a handy dose of croc-working advice from @RockyAussie (I interfaced the back like you suggested, and cut oversize then trimmed down....) hardware from @buckleguy - used a handbag foot stitched with 0.6mm beige Tiger thread, using 3.0mm KS stitching irons (would’ve used Lin Cable but only have it in black....sooooo expensive per reel lol)

Hello all, I have ordered a baby croc. skin and this will be my first time using this leather. I will make a watch strap and maybe use kangaroo to line it; so I was wondering if I would be able to burnish thin croc and kangaroo together???? Any one know??

Have need of a good leather worker/repairer preferably around Seattle WA that feels confident in doing a repair on one of the belts I made around 2008 as shown in the pictures below. The backing needs replacing and is around 4 to 5 oz. I have included a new belt picture to help understand. Any recommendations as to who has the skills would be greatly appreciated. Brian

This is a really easy project where the result far exceeds the effort, IMHO. I couldn't find other examples of carving a crocodile pattern on this site (or anywhere on the net for that matter) and so am reposting this from the Show Off section in the hope of (a) helping someone who is looking for some ideas to snazz up the basic belt design and (b) to build up karma credits. This is a 1" wide pattern that will work with 1.25" - 1.5" belts once you add borders. But you can easily modify these dimensions by either shrinking or stretching the image to suit your needs. Or heck, just draw your own. Not much to it really. The belt on the left was finished using Fiebing's Tan Antique Finish which I mixed with a splash of Dark Red Oil Dye. The antique finish does a great job of highlighting the carved lines and tooling impressions. Surprisingly, however, the carving and tooling looks just as good without the aid of antique highlighting as shown in the solid black example (Fiebing's Oil Dye). Just guessing that with such a basic pattern and where all the cuts and impressions are deep that it holds its own regardless of the finish. Seems like there's no way to screw up on this one. I think you can get by with any finish you want. EDIT: I just remembered that for the belt on the left with the mahogany finish I first painted a resist stripe down the middle using Super Sheen, then applied the antique finish. That's gives it a fade look. I also hit it with black on the borders using an airbrush. If you don't have an airbrush, get one. They are super easy to use. Just like painting with a can of spray paint. Easy easy easy.

I had some leftover Crocodile left over from a watch band I made so I decided to make a wallet. I tried to get it black with some dye, and I knew it would take more than one application. After the first application, I knew I had to use the color that ended up on the leather. I fell in love. I used royal blue .8mm Tiger Thread at 3mm spacing. It came out matching the shell pretty well but it pops against the black lining. The lining is made from Black glazed veg-tan leather I bought to make briefcases and handbags from. I split it down to 2oz with my Tandy splitter and also thinned the edges with my tabletop belt sander. I thought the edges would be too chunky if I didn't thin them a little. Finally, the edge paint is Tandy Pro Edge Paint. I used my Radio Shack soldering iron to massage the edges and sanded them as well. All in all, it took about 5 coats with sanding between and finally melting with the soldering iron. I really need to get the attachments for the soldering iron so I can put a nice ridge at the very edge.

Hello all, I have been working with some very nice leathers over the years, and now I am working some exotics into my line. Does anyone have a source for high quality alligator or crocodile in the US? Looking for a variety of colors particularly browns and tans. I don't mind buying from overseas, but I would much rather buy from the US. Price is not as big a concern as the quality and colors available. I am willing to pay a little more if the product is high quality. Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated! Cheers and thanks in advance, David

This fella John has asked me to make him a three quarter length coat in a few crocodile hides he's prepared (he hunts, taxidermies and tans leather of crocs and smaller animals in Australia and Papua New Guinea and gold prospects in PNG too) but they're about 4-5mm thick (10-12 ounces). I didn't get the ruler flush with the leather in my photo. To make a garment I'd need it to be at last half that or ideally a quarter of that thickness. I've never used a splitter before so I don't know how it would go with the scales of the skin side. I'm going to ask the companies Packer and Maclace in Australia and also thought you guys would have a great idea on how to do it. To do it myself, John suggested I could sand it off, he tried by hand but it's too laborous for him. A mate knows someone with a splitter with the width of 700mm so that should be sufficient so they'll get back to me. I'd cut off the limbs on the hide so it would be flat I reckon. On a side note regarding the job: To make the coat John wants the scales in the centre of the back of the coat and that's the only requirement. The rest of the garment would look better using full belly pieces which are smooth and flat but I reckon he wouldn't have any hides cut down the back so the belly isn't divided down the middle so they'll be a lot of seams in the coat. If it ends up being only split half thickness I'd have to sew the seams on top of each other, without a seam allowance.

Crocodile Dog Collar And Leash Set
The Dawg Club posted a topic in Collars, Cuffs, Leashes and Leads
One set I made for my crew and one for a good friend on mine who is one of the creators of the Shorty Bull. One leash has the tail attached...the other just has accents. Malik- 6 replies

I have hundreds of skins of small/baby alligator or crocodile, I am not sure which. They were left over from an old project and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out exactly what I own and how much it is worth and where is the best outlet to sell them. I have 5 different colors. They vary in size but are all approx. 25" long and 2-3" at the widest part. Thanks!
