This is Zoe from China, a freshman in this leather line. I wanna know more about leather splitting machine, for example, what's the main different point about Fortuna, Camoga, and Nippy brand? What's the different materials for them or which area do they most suitable for? Someone told me Nippy is more suitable for making some sport equipment, what about Fortuna and Camoga? When I need to buy a splitting machine, how can I select one suitable for me? Or how can I recommend a most suitable machine for my clients. Any comments about splitting machine, will be highly appreciated. Best regards Zoe

Hello Can anyone explain why a top and bottom feed skiver is better than a bottom feed only? Can a top and bottom feed skiver do everything that a bottom feed only skiver can do...but more? If a Leatherworker.net Member is skiving mostly higher temper Herman Oak 3-4oz (1-2mm) leather...can this work be done on a Top and Bottom Feed skiver or should this individual use a bottom feed only skiver. There is not one sewing machine that does everything...Is this also true for Skiving machines? Do I need both? Your assistance to the questions above will assist me in deciding on which machine to purchase and will ultimately determine the success of my business and the health of my sanity! Many Thanks in advance. Silverd

Hi All, Today I received a reconditioned Fortuna skiving machine having waited impatiently for a month for it to arrive. I'd asked for a V50 S or equivalent machine, but I'm not exactly sure what it is that I've received. I was expecting a bottom feed machine, with continuous drive motor for the bell knife and a separate clutch motor for the feed wheel, as I thought this was standard with the V50 S. On the machine that I've received, the bell knife and feed are both driven together, which really limits it's effectiveness. Is it possible to simply install a separate motor to isolate the knife from the feed stone? My knowledge of machines and motors is pretty pathetic so I'm trying to consume as much info as possible from the internet at the moment, I'd really appreciate any advice! Photos attached. Cheers Edd

Hi I have a working Fortuna Skiver, pictured below. Can anyone tell me anything about its age please? It is labelled "Fortuna New York" and L F 15240 The mechanism for setting the roller is "interesting" to say the least, and it workd well on thick leathers that are narrower than teh roller, as a splitter, but I would love to get a manual to use it effectively as a skiver. Any knowledge sharing would be really appreciated. I am also keen to get a different length guide. Thank you H

Replacing a band-blade in a Fortuna SAS leather splitting machine can be a complicated job, follow the instructions carefully and have plenty of space around your machine to work. Our Fortuna SAS 15″ band blade leather splitter recently developed a crack in the blade and needed to be replace. These steps are taken almost verbatim from the Fortuna owners manual. Click here to see the full blog post complete with photos and instructions. I hope this is a big help to anyone with one of these machines! Nick Duvall

Hey Leather Pros, I found an older Nippy Skiver for sale. The seller says it turns freely and is in need of a cleaning. There a couple of screws missing and maybe the guide. They are asking $500 for the head only. Is it a good deal?

Hoping that someone out there will have some advice for me! I recently purchased a Fortuna Simplex and have been working to learn how to use it. I'm having a hard time getting consistency. It has a tendency to do OK then, suddenly, take a much deeper cut. I've read in the manual that the inside bevel on the bell knife is supposed to be "minimal" and I appear to have an inside bevel that is almost as strong as the exterior bevel and I can't figure out why there is even a bevel there at all as I am demurring with the stone and not letting my emory wheel touch the knife at all. The photo is not all that I hoped for but it's hard to get a picture in there! Any experience that anyone can share would really be appreciated. Tom

I purchased an old Fortuna AS320 Band Knife Splitting Machine for my shop. After a couple of months of working the electrical issues, I finally have the machine working, but need to make some adjustments and lack the guts and knowledge to make those adjustment. I'm interested in contacting individuals that have the knowledge and are willing to help. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am a amateur worker for leather. I have restored a couple of sewing machines and recently I have started to restore an apparently very old Fortuna leather skyving. I am having some difficulty knowing how the lower drag mechanism works, because I have received the machine disassembled. I could upload some photos and I would appreciate it if you could help me.

I'm in the market for a skiving machine and came across this old Fortuna. I've never used a bell skiver and realize that they are finicky and have a learning curve. That said, would this machine be a worthwhile purchase if it works properly or would I be better off buying a new Cowboy or other clone? I usually buy old machines but am just not sure if skivers are easily repaired or costly to do so. I appreciate any input.

I'm preparing for a move to a city and my workshop is in need of downsizing - and the first piece to go is my beloved Fortuna Skiver! She was a pain in the beginning, until I realized it was operator error o_O, and then she worked like a charm. I've recently replaced the bell knife and have got two feeder barrels (one emory and one grooved metal for thicker leather. Comes with two sharpening rods for getting the burs off the inside of the knife after you sharpen it. I'm not sure how old it is, but it works really well and exactly as you'd expect from a well-made machine like this. I'm asking $1990. I'm located in East Texas and not unwilling to drive a few hours to deliver or meet someone for a handoff if that's convenient for you. If you have any questions, let me know! Hi there. Thanks to the folks who helped me with when I posted a couple of years ago about getting my machine up and running. Alas, I never put the time and resources in to it so I am selling. I am parting with my old Fortuna Skiving Machine. It runs, but would probably need someone who knew what they were doing to get it up and working properly. I had a sewing machine repair person come by and service it. At the time, he said it needed new belting. I bought leather belting for it but never bothered to get him to come back, because I wanted to find someone who serviced skiving machines in particular. Anyway, it does not have an aspirator, but it is in good condition from what I can tell and includes a couple of extra presser feet. I am not an expert on this machine as I only really used one when I was in school and there was a tech on hand in the labs in case anything went awry. I had aspirations of having it up and running and making all sorts of things, but alas they have remained aspirations. My loss is your gain! I got a few PM's on top of replies to my old post in regards to suggestions on pricing. I have landed on asking $750 obo AS IS, local pick up only (I'm in New York City) and payment cash, Venmo or PayPal ONLY. Here is the link to the folder with pictures: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0ByX2cUowucQxWG1mbWd1dnZYSkE?usp=sharing. Please only serious buyers.

Hey guys, I've got a question regarding skiving machine sharpening. Usually this part didn't cause trouble until now. I simply can't get it sharp and the blade leaves these ridges which then also show on the surface if you bend the leather. How I'm sharpening: - First I move the blade into the required position (almost next to the foot) - After that I paint the bevel with a marker - Then I move the grinding wheel into position and grind until the bevel is nice and to the edge (the grinding wheel is almost new, so is the knife which I replaced not so long ago) Am I missing a step? This usually worked but for some reason it doesn't today. I did notice however that when i painted the bevel, if I sharpened it ''gently'' there were 3 depressions in the blade remained painted. Due to this I sharpened a bit harder and I think they flattened out. Here's a picture of leather I skived:

I'm hoping one of y'all can give me some advice, because this machine is costing me a fortune in lost leather! I'm using it to skive 2-3oz down to 1.5 or so - and I go nice and slow, starting off with it barely gripping the leather at all, slowing lowering the presser foot bit by bit barely removing anything. Then it works really well for a spell, then as I move to a bigger piece or a piece I can't mess up on, it grips it and ruins it. I just can't understand it, and I'm hoping there's a trick I'm missing? I have replaced the bell knife, replaced the feed roll with an emory type (it came with a metal toothed roller), and the front tension spring did not provide much tension, so I added some electrical tape around it and that actually helped a lot to decrease the frequency...however, it still happens too frequently. Here's an album of the machine and some leather it's ruined! (https://goo.gl/photos/pPdV57qhxAp1Kha48) Any ideas? I'd be forever grateful for any advice or tips on more efficiently using one of these machines! Cheers! - Ross

I had a vintage Fortuna s50v that was set up in a particular way: when the ON switch was turned on, the bell knife rotated at constant high speed. The feed roller variable speed was controlled with the foot pedal (a light press on the foot pedal would ensure a slow feed; flooring the foot pedal made the feed roller rotate at top speed). This setup was perfect for the types of leathers I skive. When moved abroad I sold the Fortuna, and am now looking at a Japan-made Nippy NP-202 or NP-2 or skiver (essentially same-same parts as that old Fortuna). Local skiver vendors say to set a skiver up that way two motors are needed. One underneath and an additional motor mounted to the table behind the skiver (back right). I am not very mechanical, but not inclined to want to mount a motor on the table behind the skiver. The Fortuna v50s seemed to have only one motor. Enclosing photo and have many more photos of the guts & back of the skiver if helpful. Question: In order to run bell knife at constant speed and control feed roller at variable speed, are two motors necessary? What is the best optimized way to set up the skiver? Specific suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello all, I need some advice. I bought a old Fortuna Skiving machine over a year ago which I haven't really used. I'm a newbie, who learned how to skive leather in school, but I never really learned maintenance of the machine, or repairs. When I bought it I asked around the fabric district in NYC for repairers who could service the machine. A gentleman that normally works on Sewing Machines came in and tried to service the machine for me. The machine can run, but is inconsistent in the thickness it shaves off and often "eats up" the leather. It was at the time missing one of the belts on the inside of the machine. I have postponed calling him again, as I would prefer someone who is more familiar with skiving machines to come back. I am wondering considering that I am a casual user/newbie anyone's thoughts on - 1) if they know of any good skiving machine servicers in the NYC area, and 2) perhaps it's better for me to try to sell the machine on eBay or this forum considering that I sew leather somewhat infrequently? I say this, because from what I read on these forums, part replacement on old Fortuna machines sound costly! I have attached a couple of photos of the machine. Thank you!

I'm looking for a good, used skiving machine...I'd really prefer a used Fortuna or one of the Italian models. Prefer somewhere near Houston to avoid shipping, if possible. Doesn't have to be perfect as long as the price reflects its condition. Cosmetic flaws are fine...I just want something that will work well with thinner chrome tan leather and shell cordovan...don't really need it for thick veg tan leather at the moment. If you have anything like this available, please send me a PM with your best price and I'll reply ASAP. (I've never found haggling to be "fun", so I generally don't participate in it...sorry...I know it is fun for some people, but I guess I don't have that gene or something... ) Not interested in chinese machines, thanks.

I was wondering if anyone has some experience with a Fortuna 12" band splitter? I just bought it a month ago and I'm having trouble making it work properly. Most of the time when I put a piece of say 6" x 7" 4 oz leather and I want to make it 2 oz the splitting is uneven or the machine "eats" part of the piece. Please help! Thank you.

Hi guys. I'm refurbishing a Manufacturers Supplies Co. "Combination Skiver" probably from the early 60s. I think it's a knockoff of a Fortuna bell knife machine, or even a rebadged Fortuna. I say that because it doesn't match any of Manufacturers Supplies Co.'s patents, and they have a few for different machines. I need the main head unit belt (not the 3 phase clutch motor drive belt) and serpentine belt dimensions. The owners manual only includes part numbers. After 4 calls with promises of follow up, Manufacturers Supply Co. (still in business in St. Louis) does not appear interested in either selling the parts or telling me their dimensions. I can't fault them for not stocking $10 parts for a 50 year old machine. So — I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone who has one of these or a similar Fortuna give me the dimensions of these belts so I can possibly avoid having to order 10 parts from McMaster to find the correct size. Thanks in advance.
