Version 4 of the case design. I think a bit oversized, very difficult to stitch together, particularly the gusset, which took nearly 6 hours. Of the 5 designs I prototyped, this is the one I liked the most. I am certainly open to constructive criticism, particularly on construction techniques, as the next one is to be made out of more expensive glazed Alligator. YinTx A couple more showing the inside, etc.

Back in the late '90's I closed my Ostrich Farm in Criner, OK. This week while going thru and thinning out my storage shed I came across a box of 8 hides I had tanned by Capital Leather, Johnstown, NY in 2002. I have the invoice and intend to call the tannery to see how they are doing. I need a few ideas on what to do with the ostrich hides. I skinned two couches and have really improved on my hand stitching the soft chrome tanned upholstery leather. My attention to hand stitching detail and learning the assembly process of a simple zippered coin purse is getting better. My first attempts are real POS's! I use generic stitching chisels, 002 John Jams Needles, 0.8mm ritza thread, Uniters Edge Paint and a homemade stitching pony made from the beautiful maple wood from one of the 40 year old couches. I'm not good enough to use marking chisels and a diamond shaped awl. I plan to continue making the coin purses/wallets for gifts to family and friends. I want to make two belts for myself...so I need a few straps of belt worthy cow leather... So...what do I do with the ostrich hides? I'm not experienced with grading...by a few are blemish free in the full quill diamond area. Attached is the 4th coin purse I made. I'm beginning to feel like I just might have the patience, interest and pride in learning leather work. Feed back is requested... Take Care, AlamoJOE

Does anyone know if the lizard, ostrich, alligator remnants on sale on the online outlet store real or fake. They do also have a "genuine caiman flank" for sale, I just didn't know since the other remnants don't say genuine. Thanks

Hi Guys, Need some help. I am making a ostrich handbag for a customer but when I sew the leather it is dropping several stitches in a row. From 24 stitches only 7 was not dropped. When I change the leather to chrome tanned or veg tanned - no stitches are dropped. The ostrich leather is very soft and somewhat fuzzy. Could you help me understand why stitches are dropped. I use a Typical (GC2603) Cylinder bed walking foot sewing machine, DPx135 x 17 (18/110) needle with M39 polyester thread. Look forward to your help.

Here are some of the holsters I've done over the years. As I go through and resize my pictures, I'll add more.

This is a Ruger lc9/lc9s holster with matching single mag pouch. The holster has a 5 degree can't. The set is smooth lined inside and left natural in color. The accent is brown Ostrich leg. I used some 6/7 and 2/3 Hermann Oak that I had on hand. The holster ended up at roughly 10 For the back and 9.5 for the front. I like this total thickness. I have been debating on getting more 8/9 or moving to 9/10. I think 9/10 will be what I get next.

Just finished this phone case. 4/5 oz veg tan with 2 oz veg lining. Inset is ostrich leg, originally glazed white that I re-dyed med. brown. I welcome any comments and criticism.

Looking for a supplier of exotic scraps. Preferably around a foot square, give or take. The gal I make the tack for has been buying from Springfield and a couple other places, not sure about the names. She hasn't been dissatisfied, just looking for more variety. The smallish overlay pieces in the picture is about the size of pieces we will be cutting, but there needs to be enough to cut multiple pieces to complete a set. I have a pretty good supply of metallics (14 sides) so I probably don't need any of that. Thanks in advance.

Hi folks, I found myself with some free time and can’t really say why but I caught this bug to work with exotic leathers. We just finished a new section of our house and I’d like to do something special for the den area. I'm thinking of wrapping or trimming a flatscreen TV frame in some type of exotic leather - either ostrich, lizard, alligator or python to give you a better idea. My brother happens to own a TV store in Arizona so luckily I’ll have a few TVs to learn on which I am sure I will need! I may also at some point do some other projects with the skins, but for now the TV is just something I’d like to focus on.. Any ideas or suggestions for what sewing machine I should buy? Again, I see myself likely doing more projects in the future with exotic skins - so buying a sewing machine that costs more than it would to have it made by a pro is a nonissue. My concerns are that I’ve never seen something like this before and sewing on a TV obviously near the screen and on top of the plastic… I imagine I would use a layer of cowhide under the exotics. Hoping to get some good advice from the fine experts on this forum and anyone else who wants to chime in. Tell me what you think.. thanks ya'll Buck

I made these for a couple of guys I met on the traditional archery forum, TradGang. Both are made from ostrich leg skin and backed with vegetable-tanned cowhide. The trim is deer hide and I carved the lace hooks from deer antler and then stained them with aniline dye. Everything was sewn by hand using artificial sinew. Darren

Hello, We are new to this forum and are looking for someone in the Northwest Arkansas area to take our scrap leather and turn them into bi-fold wallets, etc. We have tons of ostrich, buffalo, and lamb hides available. Our hides are all cut down to our book binding size, and hides measure roughly 17" W x 13" H. We compensate for your time and skill. Thanks.
