  1. Hey leathercrafters of reddit! I'm a complete beginner in leatherworking and my end goal is to make a cute purse for my spouse, watch straps and a dopp kit for myself. I have watched videos and I'm reading about the basics, and I want to set my foot in there. I would greatly appreciate tips, tricks, advice, maybe even links? I have a budget of about 200$ to begin with and hopefully make it with the purse, or at least. In terms of tools, I only own rulers a cutting mat and small knives (like x-acto knives). In geographical terms I'd rather use European suppliers to aid with lower shipping costs to me. To be specific, she likes leather products from the big brands, with finishes like the Saffiano, Epi and Epsom leathers. I know it's standardized leather and I might have to put a good penny on it by itself? I'd like to make a lightweight bag, yet have it hold shape and stiffness. I want to add a lining too, but I went lost in all the options. the watch straps I'd like are simple, yet I want them to be comfortable to wear in terms of material that lays on the skin. I'd like to make a dopp kit that js waterproof (or at least splash proof) lined with something soft. I know I'd need a mallet, pricking irons, needles, thread, probably edge dying and finishing supplies, and probably some more tools and supplies. Is there a type of leather, supply, thread, tool etc to avoid? Anything I can cheap out on? Things that are worth the investment? I'd appreciate any and all inputs! Thanks in advance!
  2. Recently I had a go at replacing my old watch strap and decided to film most of the process. It was a fairly easy yet rewarding project as I had the old one to use as a template.
  3. Hello, I'm looking for skiving machine primary for making watch strap. Until now i skived by hand parts in wallets and cardholders, but thinning in full area for watch stap is nightmare. I want buy high quality machine. I found rebuild skiving machine Fortuna SM 50 from company Sieck (for 2000 EUR). Is ti good idea buy machine like this or try to find some new machine from cheaper company? Thank you best regards ZČ
  4. Some time ago there was a young lady who did a tutorial on watch strap making. I think she was making, tooling, and painting an Apple Watch strap. I have searched the forums but can't find it anymore. Does anyone remember this? Can you point me to it?
  5. https://youtu.be/yVZLUzpWiyw This time I made the strap with PU leather that has Goyard pattern on it. it's my first time to make with PU, it wasn't as easy as working with genuine leather. the PU wasn't easy to apply adhesive. and awl can't leave any mark on it, so i had to directly cut it by patterns on, which i usually don't.
  6. **First thing: I'm so sorry about my English** Like my title i need patterns Ai file or Core file or maybe Photoshop file for all size of Watch Strap ! Thank you guy for reading !!
  7. Hello Everyone, I'm looking for various pieces of exotic leather. I'm a fledgeling watch strap hobbyist, looking for pieces of 1 to 3 square feet. Potentially scraps if 1 inch wide and 6+ inches long. Open to just about any exotics, or bison, shrunken grain leather, or anyhting interesting and with a lot of character. Feel free to get intouch on here, or email directly at moscar80@gmail Thanks!
  8. I have a new found respect for watch strap makers. Just made my first with tools (and fingers) that are designed for much more robust gear. The watch owner has a favorite watch she could no longer get straps for and asked me if I could make something that would work. Did my best to duplicate and made a list of new tools I absolutely need for the collection. First pic is the orginal.
  9. This morning I thought I would take pictures as I make a new watch strap for my Samsung Smart watch. Unfortunately, my phone takes 10mb pictures and after emailing them to myself, I have to move them into photoshop and decrease them in size, which is taking quite a bit of time. The whole process should take between 4 and 6 hours for one of these. However, I don't think I'll hit that mark today. I'll keep you posted.
  10. This week I have had the pleasure and honour to make some tricky little watch straps from the one and only very sought after 230 year old meta catharina Russian Reindeer leather! As most of you may know this leather is like gold dust unless you were lucky enough to get a hide or two of it in the 80's. Very nerve wracking cutting these out and double nerve wracking making sure I didn't drop a stitch or just rip right though an antique that I could never put back together again! Thankfully it went smoothly with no major hiccups so the customer was happy ......here they are ( the strap on the top of the three is just normal veg tan)
  11. I had a watch strap spring pin disappear this past weekend, so I need to replace it. I discovered that Amazon had a humongous assortment, about 500 times more pins than I actually needed, for about the same price I could actually purchase the needed pins: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CFVUASS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 With that many pins in hand, I might have to start making a bunch of watch straps! I can have a new strap for every day of the month! Maybe others will find this information timely and useful.
  12. Hi I am looking for a supplier that is able to produce a custom coloured suede suitable for use as the inner lining in a watch strap. The quantities would be small to begin with but I'd expect them to grow as our company evolves. Thank you Jonathan
  13. I've just finished this and thought I'd post it here. Its a bit different to my usual vinage leather style strap. Thanks for looking
  14. Hello guys, i started leatherworking about 3-4 months ago, but due to work, I haven't practice a lot. Yesterday I bought a Horween side (4oz) and started playing with it - and this it what I came out with. This watch strap is 22mm. I'm working into fixing my edges somewhat more; and for the next time, a better alignment of the buckle holes plus the front tip. I also uploaded my first ever leather job (the valet), and first ever saddle stitch. Thank you. :-)
  15. So far, the smallest item I've made other than zipper pulls... finally got up enough nerve to attempt a watch strap.... custom made for a very small wrist... and a tiny watch. My pinky is bigger than these straps! The 432 Fil Au Chinois is a bit too thick for this application, but... the recipient seems really really happy, so thats what matters... YinTx
  16. Hi guys I'm new to leather craft however have made a few projects already. Currently I'm working on a new watch strap for my Apple Watch. I want to design the strap to have a top and bottom layer all stuck to some 1mm veg tan. I have already purchased some soft napa that I will use for the base (lining) layer. I'm however stuck what to use as a top layer. To be honest I'm not sure what to look for? And where to look. What is think patterened leather callled? Skin? Where would I find said leather? This video shows the process I am following.
  17. two years a go, i made a video about making wallet, and this time I made a video about making a watch strap , uploaded on my YouTube. i explained from making a pattern, hope it can help someone who is trying to make a watch strap. Ps. Hope you guys understand my English in video.

  20. Hi, I am totally new to the leatherworking hobby. I started this hobby because I really like watches. I wanted to buy a leather strap but it is very expensive, so I think, why didn't I try to make it myself? I started to get the idea on how to cut the leather, skiving leather, etc. There's this one thing that I haven't figure out yet, which is, how to make the knot / stitch on the strap? I found this article on the internet and it says," To do, pull one of the needles through the first hole and out the back, then bring it round to the front hole again, creating a full loop round the edge of the strap. Do the reverse of this with the other needle." (from clamldn wordpress). I am able to achieve a similar look that I want with this guide, but I am not sure if it is strong enough. I am afraid that the knot may easily becomes loose when I use it on the watch. Do you guys know how to do the knot on the photo? Can you give me a guide on how to do that? I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks!
  21. Hello All, This is a Christmas present for a friend of the family. Horween essex exterior lined and padded with Veg Tan. Saddle stitched with 632 fil au chinois, at 8 Spi (9 tpi iron) One of the punched holes got away from me and is a bit off center, it really upset me as there is nothing than can be done once it's punched. Oh well, I don't think his wrist is that big anyway .
  22. Hello everyone, This is a strap I made for myself, a little while ago, when my original one broke. Italian veg exterior. lined with natural veg. 9 spi with 632 lin cable Next order of business is a better watch Thanks for looking. Chris
  23. I'm having difficulty finding a really nice quality leather. I've been buying my shoulders from a local Tandy store and they are not meeting my quality standards. I've investigated Horween leathers but just wondered if anyone could point me towards some rock solid leather suppliers that won't steer me wrong. I understand it's tricky divulging maker-secrets but any advice would be very much appreciated.
  24. Hello, I've been asked to backed a leather watch strap with fabric for allergic reasons. I have never done this, is there a way to do it? Is there a special fabric for this? Does using a piece of jeans is a good idea?
