Latest Shipment Of Leather Machines
dirtclod replied to Singermania's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
When i get rich i want to come and see your collection in person !!! The old machines are so neat to look at, not only were they built to work but the stands are amazing desgins !! What is the three legged machine in the first set of pictures. It looks like some kind of Mac Kay ( probley spelled wrong ) it reminds me of a crown. Well reading again i see what it is, it is neat looking. -

Bobbin Tension Issues On Cowboy 3200
dirtclod replied to vikingusa1's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Personally i use a 160 / 23 needle for 69 and 138 thread and a 200 needle not sure what the size is in the two number sizes for 207 and 277 thread. Just went and looked on Bobs website a 200 is a size 25 needle. -
This is just a guess but i think it's for mashing the edge of the sole against the welt after it's been glued on or maybe after it's been sewn.

dirtclod replied to vikingusa1's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I was able to read the numbers even when i had catracts. Most of the time now i use two pair of reading glasses to read the numbers and it is a lot easier to see them to. -
Bobbin Tension Issues On Cowboy 3200

Get a magnifing glass and a good light and you can read the size of the needle on the needle it's self. The number is on the big end where it fits in the machine. -

Creating That Natural, Raw, Jagged-Edge On A Hide (Lambskin)
dirtclod replied to odynrose's topic in How Do I Do That?
Take a fist sized rock and beat it and kinda drag the rock all at the same time along the edge. Something hard under it would help i would think. Might work. -
Best Thread For Home Machine Sewing On 1.6 Mm Veg Tan Leather?
dirtclod replied to KateB's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
The only time i use nylon thread is when i have run out of polyester or i don't have the right color in polyester. I've read that is hard on your machine and i do know it seems to make my machine work harder when i sewing with nylon. If your in the sun, polester will last longer than nylon.- 3 replies

You can a 3" thick granite surface plate from Enco for around 30.00 and free shipping when their on sale. I have one and it works great. For several years i used a 1 1/4 and it worked fine but thicker is a lot better.

That was real intresting. Thanks posting the link.

You better try glueing on some scrap first, because i never had any luck glueing anything to a oiled piece of leather like what you have.

Barges Contact Cement
dirtclod replied to Vikti's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
I have used it when it looked pretty bad and it worked fine. You wil more than likely need to add some thinner to it. Try it on some scrap and see what happens. For the last couple of years i have been useing Wellwood in the red can ( you can get it at the hardware store ) works just as well as Barge and is cheaper plus it doesn't get thick and gunkie like Barge will or it hasn't on me yet. -

How Do I Determine Which Machine Would Be Best.
dirtclod replied to deborah195412's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Oltoot reading your post brought back some not to pleasant memories patching blankets....LOL. I had people that would bring a blanket covered in manure and soaking weat with pee and stinking to high heaven and want them patched. Then swell up like a toad when i told no, wash it and bring it back. The next question was always where can i wash it at ? My answer was the car wash, some did and some never came back. -
How Do I Determine Which Machine Would Be Best.
dirtclod replied to deborah195412's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
If your wanting to sew straight lines for any distance i would save my money and get something else. I have a patch machine and their good for what Wiz discribed but their not so good for everday sewing making something and reading your profile it seems you want to make stuff. -
I'm not against somebody doing well in business. I don't really like that people come and want money to start their business and you never see them again ! Why are they better than other folks that have to save their money or go to a bank and borrow the money ? More than likely they do both. I was like most people when they started i had NOTHING but i bought a tool or tools when i saved up enough to get them. Doing that i built up the tools that i needed. When i needed a new sewing machine i took what i had saved and borrowed the rest from the bank and made payments. I'm proud for anybody that well it's just i am more proud for some folks than others. I guess what really gets me is most of the time it's their first post and they ask for money or send your customer to me. Personally i have worked years to get a good customer base and i'm not going to tell them to try so and so espically when i know nothing about their work. People on here have given freely of their knowledge to help some body and lots of the time get told they don't what their talking about and never get a thank you. When i started 30 years ago it was HARD to find somebody that would share anything with you, if they did it was just enough to get you in trouble. You can put me in which ever catagory you want the lazy bunch or the won't tell bunch. I don't care !!

I agree with Sylvia get some Angelus dye it's the best i have used. You can get it at Turtle Feathers and they ship it quick. I mix 50 / 50 with denatured alcohol and it works fine, alot better than Febings and i use it for years but no more !!
