  1. RichK, welcome to the forums. If you scroll down to the Gun holster, Rifle Sling, Knife sheath forum heading, there are several pinned topics there. Look for making Cow boy holster tutorial and Holster design (Long). Both of those demonstrate drawing your own pattern. Basicaly take a manilla file folder open it up set the sights of the the gun on the center line of the folder, gently roll the gun over on to its side. Holding the gun in place trace around it. Now take a pencil and draw the shape of the holster around it, adjust the lines until you get a shape that suits you. The tutorials I mentioned will go into more detail. ALso for about $9.00 you can down load the al stohlman How to make holsters book from the Tandy's Leathercraft Library. There is a holster pattern in the book that would work for that gun. The book its self gives you most of the information you need on how to make a holster.
  2. Bigpaws, just talked to Scott at Duncans Outdoor http://duncansoutdoor.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Dummy-Gun-Inventory-2015-02-04.pdf He sold his last model 19 yesterday but has some comming from the foundry next week. If your interested give him a call and he will put you on the list.
  3. Dusty's video is good and comes with I can't remember one or two patterns.
  4. Feel free to ask all the questions you want also peruse the Gun holster Rifle Sling and Knife Sheath forum you may find some of your questions already answered and you will definately find inspiration. If you are making a holster for concealed carry you will need to decide if you want pancake style, avenger style aka Atkins, etc. Just to help you with terminology IWB is inside the waist band, OWB is outside the waist band, which is what I think you mean when you say over the belt.
  5. Snubyfan will be dissapointed to hear you calling it a stub nose, he thinks it is a Snub nose Here are some tutorials and videos that will give you some basic direction and a couple even have a list of suggested tools you will find useful in holster making. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19714&page=1 http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19338&page=1 http://www.jdlawhon.com/tutorial.html http://www.shanewhitlock.com/photo/v/leather/holsters/tut/ http://unblinkingeye.com/Guns/CH/ch.html Videos http://www.adamsleatherworks.com/hows-it-made/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6QoneJVkQI&list=PL81A37A6E59504E9F 12 parts
  6. The stohlman book has a holster in it for your colt challenger. That would be a good one to learn the basics on. As to an answer for your question why is the trigger guard covered- So you don't shoot yourself in the foot! With the trigger guard covered you lay the trigger finger alongside the holster as you draw and the trigger finger does not go into the trigger guard until you have brought the gun up for presentation to the target. If you have the triger guard exposed and you insert your finger in the trigger guard as you draw there is a potential for an accidental discharge. THere other concerns as well and storys of stupid human tricks. However this is an abreviated answer just to give you an idea why. If you are carring concealed I would reccomend covering the trigger guard.
  7. Carrienna, the best place to start is right here. Do you know what type of holster you want to make, concealed carry, field, western, period correct etc.? Do you have a gun to use for molding the holster? If you go to Gun Holster, Rifle Sling, Knife Sheath heading of these forums you will find several holster tutorials pinned. I can also give you a list of worth while how to make a holster videos online that you can watch for free. Look under the DIY heading for videos. There is a three part on how to make a holster that is free and very informative. JLSleather has very resonably priced patterns on his etsy store https://www.etsy.com/shop/jlsleather?page=3 . Check with your local Tandy some have basic holster making classes from time to time. Also get the Al Stohlman book Making Holsters. The patterns are dated but the information is invaluable. 8. Troy, if you have'nt already try Buffalo Brothers Cowboy Store, Trig brothers and Conchos.com Not sure the sizes but Iknow all three sell a veriety of slotted conchos. Montans Silversmiths also has some and they do custom work.
  9. David, happy to help if I can. Again others will haevwhat they think is best to start out with but the above list will definitely get you started in the right direction.
  10. Well then you need one of everything. Seriously to get started with just the basics you will need: Something to cut with you can use from a basic utility knife to a fancy round knife. Something to hammer with mallet or maul. If you are going to be cutting your own straps a strap cutter would be good. Snap setter, rivet setter something to punch holes with, a good quality rotary hole punch would be reccomended then add different punches as needed. Basic sewing needs: needle thread, stitch groover over stitch wheel (spi of your choice) some people prefer pricking irons instead of overstitch wheel. Diamond awl An edge beveler Something to burnish the edges can be as simple as a hardwood dowel with a groove in it. A swivel knife modeling spoon and a stylis As to carving/tooling buy stams, bevelers etc you need for your first project and build from there. This is a very basic list but it will get you started. If you do a search you will find your question answered many times with many different lists and opinions
  11. Sounds like it is time to move back to PA.
  12. Well, I am not across the pond. I am in Washington state. We have a new law that any exchange of a firearm requires a background check. If you read the law and take it literaly. If I hand you a gun just to look at and I did not do a background check first I just comitted a misdemeanor, when you hand it back to me you comitted another one if you did not do a background check on me. Good thing I have lots of dummy guns.
  13. JLS, nice etsy store, looks good.
  14. Any of the 300 series stainless will work fine. If you were going to be making something like a knife blade you would want 440, 440c or AU8 stainless.
  15. For developing your own patten, that looks like it came out pretty nice.
  16. Modad beat me to it. Depending on who you get the leather from they call it either holstering or plating. Some processes use both heat and pressure to firm the leather. One thing to realize if you order say 8-9 oz and have it holstered/plated. You will get leather that is thinner then the original 8-9oz thickness.
  17. Last time I ordered a single shoulder from SLC the shipping to me From MO to WA was $17.00. Figure yours is close to double the weight of mine and posiible a little bigger box.
  18. It's also posted in my post #7 on this thread. Ray, here is a list of tutorials. You can order Chucks videos directly from his site. http://www.wrtcleather.com/tr-books/books-1.shtml#sheaths If you want some inspiration look through his gallery while your there. Iwill post a list oftutorial this afternoon i am on my way out the door right now.
  20. I have Dusty Johnsons video, forgot about that one.
  21. Ray, I have been making sheaths for a long time and looking for books on the subject just as long. Beside the one that you have listed ( I have that book) the only other thing I have found in written text is Stohmans Art Of making cases Volume one. He has some basic sheath patterns and discusses the basics of making sheath. There are several tutorial that are decent. It comes down to the fact that there are just a few basic styles of sheaths that are made. Once you make a couple of sheaths you can make pretty much any style. If you havethe knife you can draw your own pattern and build the sheath from there. If you are looking to make a particular style of sheath and need information let me know I may be able to help you out. Also if you are interested in tutorials let me know I have put together a list of links of what I think are helpful sheath making tutorial. ALso Paul LOng has some good how to videos as does Chuck Burrow.
  22. Ezukara, Jared is not on here very often. You will probably get a faster response by contacting him through his web site Deffensive Carry Concepts. http://www.defensivecarryconcepts.com/index.html Thats what I do when I want one of their holster molds. I have one of the Kimber molds from them and it works very well. Scroll down their home page there is a email address for them. Also a phone number top right of the home page.
  23. Big, if you wet form it I would sugest wet forming on the side toward the body. I have seen pocket holsters that have been detail molded on bothe sides and they print just like the gun without a holster. I don't know what thickness leather you are using. On my pocket holsters Iuse a thin pice to line only the side of the holster that will be against the front of the pocket. It gives a little more stiffness and again is less likely to print the shape of the gun. If you are putting the derringer in a wallet like holster. Make sure you cannot accesss the trigger to fire while in the holster. If you do make it so it can be fired while in the holster you will run into some ATF trouble.
  24. Longtooth you are correct currently DOT snaps are made without the dimple but have dot printed as part of the logo. You can set the snap so that the word DOT is located on the side you lift. You can use a spring punch to make a DOT it works ok. The Die is the best way to make the dimple if you must have it.
  25. PM for 8-10oz tooling sent
