  1. Once again I am turning to the experts. I am trying to place letters on a ladies belt which according to the Stohlman book and the buckle she wants threads the opposite of a mans belt. I have started this three times and have ruined three straps. Is there a trick to this that I am missing? I know this is a stupid question but I cannot seem to get my brain around it. Would greatly appreciate any tips or directions.
  2. Hey ALL Delete this if I am violating etiquette but I am really needing some donated mallets. If I could afford them I would buy them but unfortunately I cannot. I have one mallet and fifteen attendees, that computes to a lot of boredom. I appreciate everybody and your timje.
  3. Once again I thank you for your generosity.
  4. Thanks for the tip Tree Reaper, but I do not believe I will have time to construct mallets from logs before the class. Plus something about me and a chain saw
  5. Dwight I am providing the compass kit from Tandy so they can embellish with their initial or a 3-D stamp which I am also providing. I have the basic weights in veg-tan but thought it would be nice if I could obtain small swatches of the more exotic hides, such as stingray, crocodile or something similar, etc. I appreciate your thought. John
  6. Thanks tboyce. I did find a pattern but the one you produced is much better. Again thank you.
  7. David From a fellow Hoosier and leather worker, welcome. John
  8. Hello: I recently agreed to instruct a Boy Scout group so they can earn their Merit Badge in Leatherwork. I have never done anything like this and am honestly questioning my sanity. I have the workbook and the manual for the merit badge and am trying (first time) to do a power point presentation so hopefully I do not bore the kids. I would appreciate any tips from those that have trailed a path before me. I am also seeking some help with basic tools, especially mallets. I have letter sets and other stamps that can be used by the scouts to construct the small compass kit from Tandy but I only have one mallet. The class is limited to fifteen and I was thinking if I could have five workstations that should be sufficient. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am not seeking monetary donations or new tools/mallets, anything anyone has that is used or extra would be great. Thank you in advance for considering this request. John
  9. Tom Once again thank you for your contribution. People, such as yourself, are what this site is all about, education and sharing.
  10. Thanks byggyns, I had the article but the picture is better than what I had tow work with. Again thanks, another example of what this site is all about.
  11. Evening All: I have a customer who wants a hatband similar to the National Park Service hatband, not the design but the cinch that is on the left side of the hatband. Does anyone have instructions for this cinch or maybe has a National Park Service friend that would allow some pictures and construction tips of it? I appreciate any and all assistance provided for this request.
  12. Cleanview You may want to reconsider your decision to hold off on a machine until productivity requires. There is a learning curve of just knowing how to thread and operate the machine correctly. Later comes getting the "feel" of the machine for example how and what does it do while sewing a corner. Practice is the key and the sooner you get one the sooner you can practice. Small gifts for family and friends is a great training tool with benefits and the receivers are more willing to overlook small mistakes. Just my two cents. Good luck.
  13. Give Toledo Sewing Machine a look www.tolindsemach.com. I am sure Toledo Bob can fix you up with something in that price range.
  14. Always a pleasure to see your work and this is no exception, fine job.
  15. Looks great to me, he should be happy.
  16. NVLeatherWorx Love it.
  17. Studio-N Thanks for the link, I will share the information with the customer and go from there. At least you provided me with another supplier, which is always appreciated. Camano Ridge Always appreciate your input and I agree. Sometimes I wonder if he is just playing, so options it is and then he can go to another playground. Thanks again for your input.
  18. Digdug18 Thanks for the tip I will research. I have lost faith in our government from the lowest level on up and like anything I can do to help myself, since they choose not too.
  19. GRUMPY I ventured the idea of covering them in leather to the customer but they saw what they saw and that is what they want. I agree though it would be much easier. In the end they may have to accept it or move on. SILVERBULLET Picky customer is an understatement, beginning to be a pain in the ......well anyway. I will research the coin covers to see if this may work. I appreciate both of your responses and suggestions.
  20. Hello Everyone: Had a customer request a belt with conchos using some Susan B. Anthony dollars his grandfather passed on to him. He does not want anything glued or attached to the dollars themselves but rather they be placed/snapped into a concho with a screw back. Does anyone know of a supplier for something like that. Sorry I do not have a picture, the customer only knows he saw them years ago and if I can find, I have the order. Have googled till I am blind, please help. Thanks for any assistance.
  21. Great work, if your going to sit in a tree for hours you might as well look good.
  22. Inspiring, very good work.
  23. Good Morning: I was asked to look at and possibly repair some scratches in a leather couch. The material is not cut and the scratches a re very superficial but have removed the color. Is there a way to wax out the scratches or some other substance that would mask the scratches without hurting the leather upholstery? Would this require covering the entire couch to get a smooth overall appearance? I don't usually do this sort of repair but it could lead to other business so I don't want to blow it. I appreciate any assistance and direction.
