  4. Wow 82 views no word from mods! Does anyone know ifJohanna is ok?
  5. Pnj look at some YouTube video on the carving aspects and practice your cuts also look for videos on how to sharpen the knife. And +1 on what was said about the hose except look for clear vinyl hose at Lowes or home Depot way cheaper and looks better. Cost as low as 75 cents per foot that would cover 4 tools .
  6. back to the regular grind today hope all had a great weekend looking to finish up a HD seat and pillion soon, also my stitching clamp II, if time permits.

  7. Johanna good morning! Its been a good long while since I have come home and was wondering if it would be possible to change my user name I have grown up a little and Stealfdawg isn't representing my work any longer. I have evolved my makers mark since taking up engraving as I use the same name when making custom knives the user name I would like is Sanch (short for Sanchez). My skills have improved so much because of this wonderful place but I find myself wondering why we as members do not challenge each other to increase our skills even more? maybe a contest such as a CIT case in the hat. Broken down by skill level etc etc, or a tooling competition once again broken down accordingly. Just a thought....unfortunately they could also create dissension in the ranks (hmmm not good )anywhoo its good to be back!!!
  8. busy 5 day weekend ending today, started fabricating a new stitching clamp but had to stop cause I tenderized my hand with a 24oz ball peen hammer!

I did that a few weeks ago. I missed the hole punch and cracked my thumb with a hammer. I still whimper when I move my thumb too much.

  10. Its been a really long time since I last posted on the forum and I missed all of you! to all the new faces HELLO! and to all the folks who were here when I first joined another huge hello! I've been Nomad for some time! now I'd like to see this particular thread started back to life and as soon as I can will post some of my "new" hand made tools any other takers here would be awesome so post em up!!
  11. staples are sometimes a necessary evil, but you need to learn the basics "saddle stitching" etcetc....good luck
  12. go with rawcustoms advice but keep going to the highest grit you can get 2k or 3k if possible..good advice from him. also don't do it if your not prepared to give it some real attention. for edge treatment I would start with 1k, 2k, 6k 12k hones then some green compound on "canvas" JMHO
  13. Oltoot, the thumbscrews work just fine now that I have "re finished" the whole shebang and when I cut the "test" strap the other day I flipped the handle of the blade to the bottom it just seemed the "correct" way to use it as the bevel on the blade will pull the leather against the fence so that's how I use it. The threads on both the rule and the handle were not tapped completely so once I chased them I got silky smooth threading and I'm pleased with my end results. I intend to make some new blades out of bandsaw blade soon. thanks for all the kind words.
  14. Moved my main work table and walled in my attached garage for the winter, working a door away from the "indoors" now still gotta move all my tools but holidays and family slowing the progress but im good with it Mom and Dad will be in from NM soon (tonight)cant wait to see em and neither can their graandsons!

  15. Thanks Mr Johnson, cuts straight, and true with no extra effort the blade was sharpened on my razor hones 1k,6k,12k,and canvas w/green compound then the leather side it'll shave you but it's not quite to hanging hair test sharp cause I didn't want a dainty foil edge.
  16. I have refinished the heritage draw gauge that was poorly cast, and polished. I also put a handle on the Osborne blade that came with it, the handle is brass pinned white tail antler dyed with fiebings Cordovan then coated in clear epoxy
  17. Thank you Mr Johnson I have sorted out my issues to include adding a handle to the now face shaving sharp Osborne blade.

    Draw Gauge

Yes I am swiftly learning the you get what you pay for thing unless you make it yourself. I'm sure the blade is fine I just need to hone it.I also plan on making some spare blades out of bandsaw blade soon.
  19. OK its sorted I just have to put the blade to some hones.....

    Draw Gauge

I looked at the weaver but I just can't justify spending that much on one tool.
  21. :You_Rock_Emoticon:Tom thank you so much! the only thing you could do to make it "more better" is make the wallet for me!! :rofl:you sir are the "Great Kazoo!!"

    Draw Gauge

update LOOK AT LATEST POST. buyer beware!
  23. Ok so I have to repost on the HERITAGE DRAW GAUGE because my temper got the best of me! Firstly I would like to say this is supposed to be a made in the USA product! Secondly I have to apologize if I go on a tirade and beat this product to a pulp. After having waited 2 weeks I finally received my "ahem" draw gauge, it looks like a draw gauge, it was advertised as having a SS rule/blade holder NO IT IS NOT it may be a high nickel content metal but SS is not quite so magnetic (yes I realize some SS is slightly magnetic) I also realize that this is a "lower end" tool. BUT what happened to buying MADE IN USA products that were made with pride? quality is GARBAGE on this tool even the C.S. Osborne blade was sent with a rolled edge! the holes for the "thumb/set" screws for both the blade holder and slide holder are not threaded all the way so both set screws "bind" before actually tightening on their appropriate/respective locations! Both shim sets (blade holder and rule holder look as though they were machined by someone using a set of plastic calipers to do the measurements. The "body of the gauge is a whole different travesty bad sand casting and not even the slightest attempt at a "finished" product, you can see the casting lines! and a weak attempt at what looks comparable to being rubbed with a junk file..ok enough im getting off my soap box so now I am faced with either another 2 week turnaround on possibly another GARBAGE tool, or take it to the shop and clean it all up re tap the messed up threads, re surface the castings and put a new edge on the blade . I think I will do the later of the two at least I know I will be satisfied with MY results and not waste anymore time and money...lesson learned Thank you for letting me vent.
  24. Red, how does the horse stall mat affect your cutting edges?
