  1. Thanks all, Bill, yes it is a 12 volt light strip bought at Wal-mart. I wasn't sure if they would work with 9 volts but they do. Lower voltage on LED's won't be as bright but they will last longer and they are plenty bright with 9 volts. These are the new LED chips, square in design. You can see how bright they are even though the flash on the camera was on.
  2. I use an earth magnet on my pruning saw case. It's a plastic case and the magnet is on the back of the case. The magnet will erase the magnetic strip on credit cards.
  3. I've been working on an illuminated dog collar for use at night. It works really well and is extremely bright at night, works off a 9 volt battery. I want to develop a different switching method to turn it on and off but all in all it works good. Kevin.
  4. How To Make Holsters by Al Stohlman, page 11, installing the end plug. Stitch down the holster and when you reach the plug you stitch around the bottom of the holster and angle through to the bottom of the plug working around the bottom of the holster. End plugs can be sole leather or laminated to the same thickness.
  5. The more you work the leather the better chance of it stretching. Did you use a square on it or measure corner to corner prior to stitching? Without taking the stitching out it is difficult to measure now. Removing the stitching would be better than throwing it out. If you can pull the leather back and split the difference between the top and bottom then do some light sanding it will be less noticeable.
  6. Did you check your leather to make sure it was square? Just because it measures the same distance across doesn't mean it's square. Measure corner to corner diagonally. The leather may also be twisted.
  7. Sometimes seeing the glue isn't an issue. You can buy an eraser to remove it in some instances. More importantly, you should match it up prior to stitching and then make changes to compensate. In this case, the left side looks higher than the right so you can pull the left side up to match the right side and then trim them even or add a border to mask the difference. The most successful leather worker is the one that can hide the mistakes and we all make them.
  8. A palm sander with the sand paper epoxied to a thin piece of hardwood might work. Sand the edges of the wood upward to keep it from digging into the leather.

  10. Don't use cheap snaps, buy DOT, there is a difference.
  11. The thing with a makers mark is they are large and you might have better results if you can press it using pressure. I use a shop press and let it sit under pressure for a few minutes before removing the pressure. Small stamps indent easily where the large ones don't. I'm not what you mean here but if you are placing the leather in the water like a bath then it's going to be too wet. Try wetting a sponge and applying the water in even amounts and wait for it to start to dry and change color prior to stamping.
  12. You can contact Rock, he's making them and may help you. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=49655

  14. That would be an overlay. The crystals are put on the strap and then another piece of leather that has the center cut out is sewn over the leather that holds the crystals.
  15. You can use a 5/32 screw but the problem you might have is getting a 5/32 T nut to match the screw.
  16. You should be able to glue the leather to card stock and use a scroll saw to cut them out.
  17. You can make the mold and press form the wet leather over it.
  18. Are you having a problem with the above method?
  19. The one thing I can suggest is to take your measurement from the outside of the die. The black circle being the die and the black dot being the rivet. Put the die on scrap material, mark two scribe lines on the material at the edge of the die. One line on the front or back of the die, the other along one side. Set your rivet and measure from the edge of the rivet to the two lines and use this measurement to set all the rivets.
  20. I use that same exacto knife but sharpen the blade on a wheel prior to cutting with it. You shouldn't have a problem cutting 3oz. with a sharp blade.
  21. Springfield has acid wash I can't get the link and post it but just search their site for acid wash sides. Kevin.
  22. One inch wide latigo leather strap plus two snaps attached with screws for adjustment and one keeper. You would be looking at a cost factor of about $17 plus labor and shipping. $22 per strap plus shipping would be a reasonable price per strap. This would be new treated adjustable leather strap with a single keeper and hardware. Cheaper snaps and straps that you could finish yourself would cost about $15 including labor plus shipping.
  23. Surplus webbing would be cheap. http://www.etsy.com/listing/115885356/vintage-military-canvas-straps-for-bags
