  1. Anybody own his book "leather tooling and carving?" Curious as to how it is.
  2. You can do the same stuff. I do clutches and purses. The only problem I really have with it is that since it is not as stiff barnishing the edges is more difficult. I lay it on a hard surface and use old jean peices. Im not quite sure how to copy pics on here from my phone though.
  3. My bad. I must have assumed them to all be this thin. Oops.
  4. Curious, the pig skin I have seems as it would be too delicate to last long as card pockets alone. Would it be recomended for handstitching with a thicker thread on cc pockets or do you use a machine with it? Just seems like it wouldnt last long. With bigger holes. Am I wrong??
  5. You can sell the pattern on etsy as well.
  6. I had just found a place called www.siska.com 5 minutes ago. You can get a sample and they have all kinds of sizes. I had just found a place called www.siska.com 5 minutes ago. You can get a sample and they have all kinds of sizes.
  7. Im having this problem as well and wondering if finding a tube and setting it like a tubed rivet on both ends would work. Problem is is getting that nice round rather than the star.
  8. Oops, messed that comment thing up Mike. I know thi question is for Manypaws however, as a jounal, there shouldnt be much a strap problem at all. Even heavy abuse rarely gets enough tug to cause loosening.
  9. Justin, it may help to note that there is some inverted beveling in there as well. If there is a specific look you are having troubles getting it may help. I am prettysure I see some in the leaves and such. Hard to tell on this small phone. Love the job. Simple pictures with great detail are excellent. Love it.
  10. There is another suggestion that not many people think about. You can buy a few blue guns, buy something from a craft store to make a mold out of it, poor in the mold. Essencially making your own cheap version that really doesnt need to hold up to the abuse of defensive tactic practices such as a blue gun. Sell the blue guns.
  11. I top paint mine on. It doesnt give it as rich of a black as dunking it but it does work for detailed stuff. After nutralizing it and letting it dry I will often paint black dye over that. Sounds like a waste of time but the vinigaroon works better than some that would normally use blue. Plus, makes a neat smokiness when you sponge dab it on and then dye a bag another color. 12. There is only one thing I have to question. Stitching. I know one statement mentioned it above but stitch is one thing that is worth mentioning. Why? Because saddle stitching has an advantage a customer cant see.
  13. Is there a possibility to find out the type of chemicals in the fertilizers? I am assuming the water stains are from the minerals or deposits the water had in it. Still not sure if it was veg tan or not. If so, i would think that some saddle soap and bleach wash would help followed by a nice wet down on the whole hide to spread the minerals more evenly. Maybe this is just nonsense Im making up but its just a thought. Are not most stains pigment or mineral concentration?
  14. I get my HO from them. I am actually surprised I dont here much about them on this forum. Maybe its because its mostly leather and not a lot of other stuff.?? I have always had a good experience. When people dont care much about customer saticefaction its probably for a lot of possible reasons some of which may be because itbis a cheaper item for reason. Much be it, they have tobpay for it to. Some times I heaitate on sale stuff even. Although you would think one would have a sale to promote business some places seem to have sales to get rid of the junk. I feel tandy does that often. Panhandles HO leather seems to be good stuff. Yet, I havnt tried many others simply because I like theirs. Not sure on what gradevits supposed to be. I do wonder why thebpricevisbso goodbin compared to somebother stores. Anyone know?
  15. I go to panhandle leather as well. Is there something I dont know about? Why do people rarely mention them? Prices are great!
  16. I get my leather from them. Great prices, good hydes. Herman oaks. Wish I knew why they were so reasonably priced.
  17. Panhandleleather.com They carry herman oak as well. Https://Panhandleleather.com They carry herman oak as well.
  18. I just keep thinking of a unicorn horn for barnishing the edges.
  19. Oh, if ever you want to get ripped off call up one of the cute sounding voices at Tandy. Pretty sure they make commision. When I started I had no idea people were doing leatherwork. I grew up in the suburbs of chicago and only saw the occasional old tooled purse from a thrift store. Thought they were awesome. Years later I bumped into a leather store and saw someones art work. Some how I found a book (cant remember how). Found the little things at Micheals, bought them and found a Tandy. Not sure how it all happened. Be carefull and go on this forum before spending on some stuff. I pain $50 for a knife and $50 for a pair of scissors. I now use the scissors for paper because they have stupid little teeth on them. I learned how much of an idiot I was when I listened to all the things those sweet girls sold me. If you call a Tandy and someone answers that sounds like they dont give 2 poops, theyre probably honest. You wont like their tone and they probably wont last long but they'll tell you substitutions, when asked.
  20. As a start, which it seems u may have done, get small pieces of leather of different oz. from springfiled to learn the sizes. Even cut a small square off and lable them. You really dont need much at all to see if you really want to get into it. I started getting the crap from Micheals. If you want to try tooling they have a cheap set with a knife. When you decide you like it, sell a few bracelets to some little girl at some school and buy better ones. Your probably wicked excited and all about getting all this stuff. People started this manopoly using stuff around the barn. They find things to make holes (nail) put a needle through and stitch. I know people that use rocks and such for background designs. A sander and barnisher is a waste of money unless you get into woodworking if you dont want to do leather. They are good items to have when you start making bigger and more pieces but I been a leatherworker for 4 years and still use sandpaper and a bone, wood, piece of genes for barnishing edges. Soon I will be getting a sander because I will be using it for more things but to start, you can use that money for other itmes.
  21. Anybody ever use this for their finished, dyed Veg tan leather? A little scared it will lift too much pigment on the black and stain my red.
  22. Curious, Started a small collection for festivals I was hoping to get into a year ago. Never happened. I figure I'll just sell them this year and Social marketing isnt my strong point. Besides, I need product at the shows and with limited time (another job) they can fill the gaps. Problem I'm facing now is that my work has improved a ton. Any suggestions? I dont really want to put my name on the others anymore but fear that pricing them too low may make my others look too expensive. Should I make an apprentice section?
  23. Thanks for the heads up. Be great if you lived out there and could just be like, "sounds hard to make an exact duplicate. I'll come pick it up". Or "I'll pay you extra to watch you make it." 24. So, your saying painting with vinegaroon is not effective because it does not soak in enough, or am I taking that wrong.
