    Using a maul

Ben, Thanks for the info re: marble. I've since gotten a granite surface plate from Grizzle I use. I just suspect I'm also hitting the stamp too hard. Perhaps the leather isn't wet enough to take a good impresion when I stamp. I always have had a problem casing my leather. Have trouble carving and don't know if it's the casing, my swivel knife or tough leather :-) SkgnJ

    Using a maul

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I've been holding the maul perpendicular to my forearm, as I seen other folks do, but I'm trying to hit the stamp, rather than just using the maul's weight. I've broken my marble stone twice so perhaps I'm hitting it too hard? Perhaps someone could show their foil hats so I can make one correctly. Is it like the hat the guy on Monty Python, whose brain hurts, wears? SkipJ

    Using a maul

Thanks all for the suggestions. I guess there is no "Dumbo" magic feather that will solve my problem, just practice. Would a foil hat help? SkipJ

    Using a maul

Thanks Rawhide, I don't remember having a problem with my old rawhide "hammer". Seems like I can't hit stamping tools or punches squarely with the maul. Perhaps it just takes practice, or I'm holding it wrong? The stamp is a new Barry King they seem square. SkipJ

    Using a maul

Does anyone else have a problem using a maul? When I use it for stamping, it seems to move the stamp in my grip, I guess, so the impression is offset from where I want it. It's one of Barry Kings. I notice this when I'm trying to do basket weave staming along a guide line. The impression ends up below the line I was holding it on. Is this the wrong tool for this job? 8. I've found using a rubber strap wrench useful in holding the container while I use a pliers on the cap. It doesn't seem to crush the can as a large pair of pliers does. SkipJ
  9. Would leather conditoner go thru Resolene? SkipJ
  10. Great job, oh well they pay the bills. Could this have been with the carving left natural? SkipJ
  11. Kate, what does the air eraser use as an abrasive? SkipJ
  12. I bought a set of them. They definitely need sharpening but that's not new. Haven't done that yet so I can't tell you if they will take an edge. SkipJ
  13. Thanks, great job. My problem is I can't seem to get the tool to stamp where I want it to. I was practicing and I noticed that when I struck the tool, the impression was clearly below the line I was trying to follow. I'm using a cylinderical shaped maul, perhaps I'm not hitting it square. 14. i personally bought a new lounge suite. If we did that in the US, we would probably only be helping China's economy cause that's where almost everything we buy is made. And I don't mean Walmart either. The last coffee maker made in the US is supposed to be Bunn but when I looked, the box said "assembled in Canada from improrted parts." SkipJ
  15. Al? Al Stolhman? Thanks for posting. Does anyone else modify, correct their tools? SkipJ

  17. I bought some "Master Cement" "Monarch of THem All" from Sheridan Leather at Wickenburg last year. It's from Petronio Shoe Products. Works like contact cement. Bruce, didn't the old Barge cement work with wet leather? I thought I remembered that from a showmaking class I took long ago. SkipJ
  18. Which guide do you have? Mine will go right up to the needle guide. Could you wrap something, duct tape, around the roller to temporarily increase it diameter? SkipJ
  19. I got a couple from Sheridan Leather last spring SkipJ
