Mini Tote
MonicaJacobson replied to thefanninator's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Nice! This one, if possible, is a 50% improvement over your first one. It looks great! -
Ha, that is pretty cool. It is instantly recognizable.

Question About Bison Leather And Re Veg Leather
MonicaJacobson replied to Padenlopez's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Thanks Mikesc - I might have completely glossed over the "water" and expected buffalo hides. In fact, that's what I was doing. I only realized it when I saw your comment. Thanks for the clarification and information. -
Flower Punch
MonicaJacobson replied to cercyonis's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
LOL, wow, they would be annoying to cut out. You might be able to buy already cut out leather flowers from somewhere. Springfield has some flower shapes for sale, and I bet you can find them a lot of places. Cool idea for a bag, btw... -
Thank you, Rohn! Unfortunately, I was having trouble with the color bleeding through to the thread because I punched the holes before I dyed. Even the ones I punched after I dyed were bleeding a little. I finished it with resolene this time. Previously I used Saddle lac, and that didn't seem to do as badly, for whatever reason. Maybe I'm just not used to dying. It's been a while. Thank you, Joe! I'm kind of surprised. But maybe my enthusiasm was dimmed - I was disappointed because it won't stand up by itself. It's great to wear, but it slumps forward. There's no stiffness on the sides to support it. I improved it over the last one by making the pocket full length so the back doesn't slump, but still.

Question About Bison Leather And Re Veg Leather
MonicaJacobson replied to Padenlopez's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Oh yeah, I saw water buffalo bends on the springfield leather website finished in Crazy Horse style. What is water buffalo like? -
A customer requested I re-make an old backpack with a new design. I advised against the soft leather, but they were adamant, so I went ahead and made it. I used antiquing for the veg tanned, and regretted it. I only used it because the one they wanted me to copy was antiqued, but I realized later they wouldn't have cared if I had used normal dye. Oh well. The antiquing was smeary, and I made a bit of a mess with it. I think it will mellow as the leather ages, however. And then secondly, I found I needed a gift with only three days notice, so I whipped this together in a couple of evening and afternoon sessions. I still haven't gotten a high spi iron, and I just got smaller thread and needles (yesterday, not in time to use on this project), so oh well. But at least I thinned the leather down considerably this time. I thinned the veg tanned to about 5 oz. I think I'll actually buy some 2-3 oz next time. I didn't have time to make nice pockets for the inside, so I just added two basic ones. It's not really technically a wallet, in that case. More like a pouch. But it was a fun project anyway. *edit - what's up with that pigskin from Springfield? It's so different from the stuff I got from Tandy, before. Can anyone tell me why?

Leather Covered Copper Enclosed Wrist Cuffs
MonicaJacobson replied to Vikefan's topic in How Do I Do That?
That sounds like an awesome project. Here's a shop that inlays them with rivets.. https://www.etsy.com/transaction/191528605? I think you could do something a lot better with stitching or lacing, as you were thinking. -
Question About Bison Leather And Re Veg Leather
MonicaJacobson replied to Padenlopez's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I don't think people usually wet mold bison. It's usually softer and more supple. In fact, I don't think people usually mold any kind of pre-finished veg tanned. I have some Dublin Horween that is dyed, finished, but also veg tanned, and I don't think you're supposed to wet mold it. I could be wrong, but that's my impression. I think it would mess up the finish and dye, for one thing. -
Welcome to the forum, and I look forward to seeing what else you make. I like the black leather bag. It looks very solid. Is it 16 oz? It looks ridiculously thick. Thanks for the info on Horween - I was just considering asking them for samples as well.

First Project
MonicaJacobson replied to stangman645's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Your stitching looks a tiny bit wiggly, but hey, that's a seriously good first wallet. I feel embarrassed for my first wallet, in retrospect. Great job! -
Briefcase For Law School

Wow, extremely impressive. I saw all your conversations and questions when you were researching this, and was curious to see how your bag would turn out. Pretty awesome! -
Sorry, I haven't really studied the construction of a leatherman case with multiple pockets - this is an old thread and all the pictures are gone, but the author said at the beginning of September that he would re-load the pictures. Maybe send him a PM and remind him: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=31601 You should also use the search option in forums for "multitool" and "leatherman", and any other combination of words you can think of. You'll probably find something helpful.

Ha, it looks like you've got all your mistakes covered. Welcome to the forum, and good luck! Leatherworking is awesome, and you're off to a good start.

Top Finish Help
MonicaJacobson replied to stelhrse's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I have noticed that when I use a fiebings dye, the leather gets very stiff and dried out. I've started using Lexol leather conditioner on the back of my projects after I dye them. I don't really know what other people do. -

I'll check with my machinist husband about the tooth grinding. I need a 2 prong as well regardless, so I might order straight from Dixon (especially if Blanchard doesn't get back to me). I'll PM you later about what I decide after I talk to him.
