Leather work swap who would be interested?

Ok folks we are under the one month mark. Still time to join in for anyone out there. Hope you guys are thinking through some cool ideas! Ross -
Looks like a well executed sheath. I do wonder about one thing the rectangular box stitched across the belt loop. I wonder if that is a weak point so to speak. I have read where doing that on a belt makes it weak over time due to the holes. Just food for thought. Love the carving work and its a tight package that will last the user a long long time Ross

Leather work swap who would be interested?

LETS MAKE IT OFFICIAL Here are the rules of this first go round. 1. Everyone makes a coaster. You decide the size. Each coaster must be carved in some form using swivel knife and stamps. Have fun use your imagination. 2. ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME. This is open to anyone. Beginner to Master. If you are new.... great try something. If you have been at it a while try something that will improve your skills. Part of the point is to encourage Making! Learn something and have fun. And get the work of another maker for you to enjoy. Remember its about the journey on this one! 3. You agree to ship your finished item to someone else when done. Obviously the cost of leather is on you and the cost of shipping. Remember you are getting someone elses work at the end and they are doing the same! 4. End Date JUNE 10th 2019. Start anytime. On June 10th I will take anyone who participated and randomly assign who sends to whom. Lets hold all pictures till I let you know who gets what. However as part of participating I ask that each person post their work after June 10th to this thread. I think we have 5 currently, Rossr, Yintx, Rockoboy, Smartee and Halojones. Anyone can join long as they finish by June 10th. DOES THIS WORK FOR EVERYONE? SHOULD I START A NEW THREAD WITH THE FINAL RULES ABOVE or just keep this one?? Ross -

Ok @YinTx I think we go with a coaster that is carved as a first project. I will post my thoughts in a second post in this thread.and give finish line. If everyone is ok with it we start and then go from there. It appears we have Smartee Thats the whole thing if you have a swivel knife and some basic tools Give it a go. All skill levels welcome. No judging just helping each other and receiving something that someone else made. As long as we try our best that is what counts! Fred Appreciate the thoughts. I would agree making 10 of something would be tough in this situation. However great thoughts on voting ! -

Alright, I am fine with something useful. So far there are the three of us. I am still holding hope for a few more. Which shall we choose? Keep it simple with a coaster? the 3x5 was a random thought since I had a index card laying on my desk lol. Ross -

Hardly Yin.....and you can always pickup something from everyone! No why not Max daddy. We will have a deadline on it but we will make sure there is enough time...no reason not too....its only 3x5 inches!! doesnt have to be complex even! Who else out there like to get at least 10 participants...more would be awesome -

East Coast Leather shows?? Do they exisit?
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
https://leathercraftersjournal.com/guilds/ http://www.ifolg.net/index.html https://www.weaverleathersupply.com/learn/events Hi Greg, Just from a quick google search there are some shows above. Also some listing of guilds. I also know there are facebook groups. I dnt really do facebook so I am not familiar. Anyone I have ever talked to say the shows are worth going too if you are into leatherwork. I just keep thinking we need some kind of show or gathering here on the east coast too! Nothing against the west coast at all just travel time etc makes it tough and costly to attend R -
ok I know there are shows out west and are very popular. But what about the east coast. Are there ever trade shows or maker shows for leather on this side of the US? I know there are guilds here and there and on off groups that meet. But I mean a full blown weekend show or what not. I have to believe there are enough leather workers to support this in the east coast....so curious what is out there and what do we know. If there isnt why not!! Is it something to pursue hmmm Ross

Hi Folks, I may have talked about this before but I would like to do this and see who else would too. Over the years I have been involved with some custom knife swaps. Also called knife in the hat. Basically folks who want to participate decide what on a style of knife and what it is to be made from, then each person makes a knife. Posts the pics to the forum. The facilitator then randomizes the participants and draws names and you send your work to another and you get another makers work. So why do this: 1. you get some one else's work for you to enjoy and admire. 2. You get to practice and stretch your abilities 3. Other makers can see your work and provide constructive criticism. 4. Its fun So with this is mind here i what I am proposing. 1. Carving work. 3x 5 inch Piece of veg tan you carve something into it. Have fun with it. No adult themes so anyone can participate that way. 2. Dyeing and finishing after carving is encouraged 3. Your skill level does not matter. Beginner to expert can and should participate. This is about improving, supporting each other and getting something from other makers 4. Cost involved. Your time and a piece of leather. Each participant agrees to ship leather carving to assigned recipient. 5. All post pictures of what they made in the forums. Thats it folks. If we get enough folks interested I say we do this I can facilitate the list etc. on this thread. We would put a finish date on for it as well. So what do you say whos in for a little carving work and sharing Ross

Yin...once again you are being too hard on yourself! Looks mighty fine to me\ \Ross -
Well this was completely different then anything I have ever tried. I had a family friend approach me about redoing her daughters Bassoon case. I decided to give it a try and these are the results. I replaced the inside with Red velvet and a fake fur material. The outside is covered in calf skin. The corners are wet molded veg tan. I also did a little carving on the lidded compartment in the inside. New hardware which I found at ohio travel bag..fast shipping! I recovered the metal handles with leather too. Overall I am pretty happy with the results.! Open to all comments ...pretty sure I wont be doing another...the price I would have to charge would be insane!

A while back I posted the above thread and There is some more info on stamps etc on there. Of course a search of leatherworker and you will gain a lot of info to go thru too! Chris: I would agree there is always new posting on ebay for leather stamps and leather vintage lots etc. I also have suffered the responses when asked about what stamps they really have in the lot. I think a lot of that has to do with resellers who dont know the difference anyway. They arent leather workers and mainly are just moving product. Which is fine. It does make it harder for folks like us looking for specifics. I know I have a drawer full of doubles and triples from buying off ebay and craigslist. Least a couple hundred. One of these days I will get around to listing them. Course It would be nice to have a full Barry King set or Jeremiah Watt...or Hackbarth etc etc....I best hit the lotto! Lets not even talk about other hand tools that is a whole other area! The search continues always!! Ross

This may drive you mad. hehehe. I have a large set of craftools but the post 1963 mainly with the letter and numbers. Years ago I bought a whole bunch of stuff together. In that was a couple hundred craftool in a homemade wood block. All nicely labeled with the letter and number prefix per hole. However many were missing! I swear anytime I follow an old doodle page or other tutorial I am missing just one stamp it recommends. So I set out to complete the block. Ive made a lot of progress but still am missing some. Along they way I realized there are lots of variants that i may not have as well which weren't labeled in the block I still hope to fill it out some day. I also would love to have a full set of the Kelly tool co midas stamps both the discontinued ones and the new set....although cost will likely stop me there. Good luck with the search I only have a few older ones which I am hanging on too. I have also found that with in the same number ones they vary some in size too! So when I buy a lot off ebay I just test the ones out and pick the one I like the best. Its a fun hunt at least!! Ross

Knife sheaths Comments Welcomed!
Rossr replied to Rossr's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thank you! The strap is something I saw in the video, seems to work well. The one end you would leave on the stud, the other you just pop off when you need the knife. I think but am not sure that Paul Long came up with that style. Perhaps he will chime in on this thread. To me its cleaner then putting it through the sheath loop part. Or using a rivet up there which I dont like cause it can scratch the knife. Like most things its another way of doing it. Not sure anyway is wrong! Thank you sir. It came out nice imo and I almost didn't want to give it up! Appreciate that Thanks much -
Hi Folks, I found the time to make two knives and sheaths prior to Christmas and both are now with their new happy owners. I continue to try and up my sheath game. I cant say enough about the Paul Longs videos... I reviewed them as I made these sheaths and I seem to pick up something new each time. (Well worth the cost. I am not paid to endorse these just feel they are worth it!) I am of course open to all comments especially ways to improve. Both sheaths are lined with deer skin. The knives are of my making as well. Rest of the sheaths are veg tan. The inlay on the one is out of a bag of scraps I bought years ago so no clue what it is...I suspet fake snake skin or snake skin dyed? Heavy stitching I did on a Campbell Randall needle awl. The finer stitching on a singer 111w155. Its amazing to me how you always keep learning. All these little things you gather as you go. This website is tremendous in helping that way and I thank you all! Ross

Hi Night shade, Its been a while since I tried it but my memory i did 10 ounce or so on it no problem. The cutting area is relatively small compared to the larger machines. I will have to get out and try and measure it again as I cant find my notes. . IF you were closer I would say just stop by but I see you are in South Carolina. Ross

Problem I have is I know I would want 69 thread to put in my patcher. Mostly near me (rural area) in the big town 30 mins away is a joann fabric. While Im sure i can match a color there I know they wont have it in 69 size. I will probably check at some point. The Quest continues
