David -- Nigel uses the stitching chisels and approves of them and I would not think they are a "beginner" tool because of that. Kulafarmer -- The ones I use are made by Seiwa...I think maybe leathercrafttools.com might sell them? I'm sure you can get them on ebay...just make sure they're Seiwa and not fakes... In addition to reading zuludog's post he sent the link to, make sure and watch Nigel Armitage's reviews of all sorts of stitch marking tools on youtube. It is very comprehensive and thorough.

Pricking irons are ONLY supposed to be for marking. You're supposed to use your awl to then make the holes. If you want to punch through completely, you need to be using stitching chisels...they are a constant width all the way up each tooth.

That would be enough to make me file a chargeback on the credit card for that stunt. Then, once they approve the chargeback and the card was credited, I would go to their store and dump everything from that particular sale on the floor for them to restock. I don't take things like that very nicely. There's no reason she should have done that...you had absolutely nothing to do with the error. She should've just ate the loss and moved on. What she did was unacceptable, in my opinion.

He's not asking how to do the slit braid...he's asking how to add a 2nd piece of leather to the end of it. Tom...I'll send you a PM with how I would attach the 2nd piece...

Your link doesn't work because you left out the : after the http As it turns out, every single letter and character in a URL is important. LOL http://www.leathercraftpattern.com/leather-machines/leather-skiving-machine/cowboy890-leather-paring-device-kit That machine looks to be a copy of the Schärf-Fix...

Where Do Rolls-Royce And Bentley Get Their Leather?

What??? -
To answer your question, most of the stuff otb sells is asian. But then again, a lot of the stuff in the Amish catalogs people recommended is also asian, so.......good luck. I'd rather use American made too, but for now I've been settling for Abbey England. Most of their hardware is made in the UK.

When people have asked this before, it was suggested they go buy one, take it apart, then you'll have your pattern. And you'd have an intact bladder to use also. If you don't want to buy a new one, you could check thrift stores, used gaming equipment places, garage sales, etc. My time is more valuable than all the time it would take to find a "cheap" one, I'd probably just go with a new one and be done with it.

Boriqua...I would recommend ordered a few sets from paragear.com and see how you like those. Their pull-the-dot snaps are meant for parachuting gear, so they do take some effort to open. I think you'd be happy with how secure they are. I also use snaps from Fasnap and am happy with those too, but for extra secure snaps I use the PTD ones from paragear...

http://www.sailrite.com/Deluxe-5-1-2-Magnetic-Sewing-Guide I use one of these. A lot nicer and more useful than flat magnets, especially for things with any thickness at all...

I use a Sailrite LSZ-1 for my light-duty parts of projects and a CB3200 for heavy duty use when the bottom stitches won't be able to be seen.

I've replaced the leather seats in a 2002 Dodge Ram and a 2008 Dodge Ram and they did NOT use hog rings...I don't think most new cars use those anymore.

I bit the bullet and bought the correct dies to set pull-the-dot snaps, so all I can say is those buggers are set very nicely and are good and secure when I use them. I know they're pricy, but I'd recommend going ahead and trying them...should give you good, consistently set pull-the-dot snaps that way. I get my pull-the-dot snaps from paragear.com...I'm sure they're the same type/brand you have.

What are you using to set them? I use a Press-n-Snap and have never had that problem...

Video: Bell Knife Skiving Machine Setup, Adjustment, And Sharpening
25b replied to 25b's topic in Leather Tools
Ok, well then it sounds like your particular process might take a lot longer than that. Glad my machine isn't built like that...looks like I made the right call on the one to get because I'd be angry if I had to do that every time I needed to move the blade. -

Well, a new blade or a very dull blade will need to be sharpened much longer than a few seconds. The way I was shown was to put the stone to the blade such that you can see a good, glowing line on the stone. Then leave it there. It should grind there for a while and as it sharpens the blade, the glowing line will get thinner and thinner to the point where it's not sharpening anymore because it's already sharpened it to the profile. Once it does that, advance the stone some more until you get that nice, thick, glowing line again...and leave it there again, etc. until you've got the entire edge profiled and sharpened correctly. Then, remove the sharpening stone back where it sits with the knob...then use your deburring stick to remove the burr on the inside of the blade. Hope that makes sense...but yes, on a new or badly-profiled blade this whole process can take around 5-10 minutes or longer (up to 20 minutes or longer if you're not very aggressive with how much "bite" you get with the sharpening stone), again depending on how badly the knife is knicked or badly profiled before. -
It's all good...it is very confusing for new people that haven't seen all the tools at once. Maybe it would be good to include pictures of each tool so that they'll be able to know what they are when they see them for sale somewhere?

There are also pricking wheels and they are not the same as an overstitch wheel. Pricking wheels make short, slanted marks and every overstitch wheel I've ever seen just makes small, round (not slanted) dots...for whatever that's worth...
