Do you have a link for the dewey knives by chance? I wanna get one or two of the Jeff Cook knives but gotta wait for a little more cash (spent the leather cash on Ed mauls lol). They arent cheap but then again I have heard nothing but good about them. Gotta let us know how it all works out and post some pics of your new knives once you get them.

These Edges Are Driving Me Crazy!
MADMAX22 replied to Sixer's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I agree with Boomstick on this one, with a few things I do slightly different because I have to do everything by hand with the occasional use of the dremel which isnt very often nowadays as I have learned to get a better cut on my edges. -
Looks excellent, I like it.

Tooled Flower Belt
MADMAX22 replied to MADMAX22's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Thanks guys, I think I need to carve out a bunch of little things and sit there and practice antiquing them. I really need to work on two areas, carving and finishing (colors). I do reasonably well at assembly, stitching and such but after that is where I need to practice more. -
I think what you wanna do and it kind of says this in the book is use a hole punch to punch out the 90* bend. This will give a slight bevel to the edge anyways. If you are edging I use the regular edgers for the corner work, its kind of a pain but you can start toward the center of the 90 and work out in both directions. If you are doing this on the flesh side I take a small razor and after doing as above will use the knife on the little bit if any left at the center of the 90. Usually though you can make the 90 with the regular edger if its nice and sharp (not the keen edge type). Hope this helps some.

Hand-Stitched Messenger Bag
MADMAX22 replied to conceptdiba's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Very nice, lots of stitching on that one. I just finished a belt and thought that was alot of stitching. Only thing I would comment on is that the little keepers where the D's attach could maybe be made a little more robust. ofcourse I like to overdo everything I make generally. -
Well another belt under the belt lol. This is for the girl that has the other belt I made a while back. She wanted the little bling but wanted black and dark with flowers and such so this is what I came up with. I must say I hate black dye, Ive gotten spoiled with doing vinegaroon projects whenever I needed black. I should have just painted this one over a vinegaroon base would have been easier. Anyways the leaves are a couple of different greens, the flowers are a mix of warm colors over a yellow base (looked cool at first) and the background is black. I went over it with black antique to darken it up some. Still learning antiquing, Hand stitched. Tried to dye the stitching afterwards but wont do that again, way to hard to control the leak thru of the dye so I will stick to natural thread color or I will dye it before hand like I usually do. Did try some new carving style, did a little inverted carving as I have not tried that before. Thanks for looking and comments welcome.

Amazing stuff Andy. Love the look of it, has kind of a rough style with enough nice carving to give it kind of give it a look of classy undertones. Great combination. I dont know much about saddles but wanna add that I like how the cinch strap, not sure of its proper name, where you cinch up under the belly at the front. I like how you did that with the little wrap around portion thats carved.

Looks great, have fun out there.

Good info Busted, I am gonna have to try out the nail thing. As far as thread size I think 6cord linen is a great size for belts, holsters, and sheaths. 3cored I like using for inlay portions of sheaths and such. I guess it depends on what you make as to the size you wanna use and the style.

Yeah great stuff aint it. My vinegaroon is pretty much black liquid but works really good. The baking soda rinse will help turn it a darker black in some cases where it doesnt turn out as well. Also I have found that HO leather really does good, WandC does pretty good as well. Tandy is hit and miss with it. Same as alot of the import leather, these are either really good or do the blue thing. Forgot I wanted to add that I am pretty spoiled with this stuff. I am currently working on a belt that I wanted to add some color to so had to dye the background black and color the tooling. I like just dipping, rinsing, then oiling and being done with it. No buffing and all the other fun that goes with dying things black.

What a bummer, well I guess I can toss my can of saddle lac. Wasnt sure how it was going to work out. Thanks for the info.

Looks pretty cool, good colors. I think the lace would look really nice as a light to medium brown personally but the current color doesnot look bad.

The corbin seats are usually chrome tan leather which you wont be able to redye, atleast with any kind of good result. Not to mention the quality of leather could vary and there is no telling what kind of top coat that leather has. My corbin seat only had leather on the top portion anyways, the rest was artificial stuff. The best bet would be to recover it or have someone recover it with what you want.

Nicely done.

Hey guys I was thinking of trying some reverse beveling but actually have not really read anywhere about how to on it. I only saw a mentioning of it in one of the Barnett guides I have. I read that he mentioned you only bevel the outline portions in toward the project and everything else within this "border" is beveled as you normally would. Is this basically it. Thanks for your help.

Great looking sheaths, little something different. That stingray one is very nice, that is a good idea. I really like that first one for the rambo knife. Challenging but it came out very nice. Your work is so meticulous with stitching and construction.
