Kev, i would say try locating someone in NJ before you jump into this craft. leather & the tools used can get real pricey quick. not just in tools but in stains, hardware, leather & anything else you may use. i did this many years ago then gave it a rest to serve my country, go thru a divorce & rebuild my life. i picked this up because i remembered that it calming calming for me to put on my headphones get into a zone & craft something that no one else has. if you do decide to jump in take a look at Springfield Leather Company. they are my only supplier for leather. also look at Ohio Travel Bag. while prices seem high with them your not just buying 10 snaps or d-rings. your buying bulk, & quality. many on this site will be glad to help you with all your questions. if you have any let me know

Springfield Leather Company Springfield, Missouri I left Tandy due to the corporate BS. Over pricing, lack of quality tools & leather, lack of exotic leathers & so on. Corporate will not let the store employees match any prices of competitors. The people that work at the local Tandy store by me are awesome though. You can go in for an hour, talk leather & they don't try to pressure a sale. SLC has never disappointed.

Springfield Leather Company. If you call them they will help you & not sell you anything you don't need. They also cut leather to the lengths/widths you need at no extra charge.

Below are links to two of my holsters iv done. i do both an overlay & inlay. the inlay you will see i will scuff up the smooth side then glue & after all is in place i still sew around the outside. on overlay i will scuff the smooth side & i will also skive the under side so that the top lays flat on the edges & i still sew the outside

yes you should start 3-5 beyond the break. I would use two needles, one at each end & pass them thru the same hole. this is how most hand stitching is done. vary strong

sure a hair dryer will work fine & cheaper than a heat gun. high or low on the hair dryer will also work fine. tan kote will work fine, just a little more expensive

Leather crafting is also not my primary. Railroad Conductor first. If you have tools & make things out of leather, your crafting. So I would say yes for you. A true crafter can always find a flaw in their own work, I think that is why many of us may be on here. More so to help each other rather than find fault. Ideas outside the box.

When I do a project that I want smoother on the flesh side, I put mink oil paste on by hand, Then use a heat gun, ON LOW HEAT, when you see the oil soak in its done, Let dry over night. You may see a white color show up, not to worry, just take a cotton towel & rub it down. You can also rub it down with a slicker for more of an effect. I do this on all of the holsters I make Try on a scrap piece first so you know what your lookin at

if you are wanting to block stain or dye from getting to a project you can use a sheen or resolene. you apply it prior to stain or dye, let it dry then when you stain it will leave the natural color of the leather present. i believe that one of these pictures should show how i did on a drag strap i built. if not @NortonLeather or Norton Custom Leather on Pinterest in my leather items section.
