  1. Welcome to the forum! Please share photographs of your work when you get a chance.
  2. Had both shoulder completedly reconstructed with minimal invasion in '05-'06. Recovered from both and now my nerves kill me, but as for the pain, I am much better since the surgery. The first shoulder was not done for 8 months and the second one did happen to get fix until a year after the first one. My was work related and I ended up suing the company and won 13 months later.....seemed like forever! All said and done, I was no longer able to play golf, but I was able to find my way to leather work. It was a blessing in some form. And, yes, drinking a cold one is rehab. Don't listen to them. You are going through the motions to keep flexiability in your joints and tendons. Also, flipping the bird up really high in the air while alternating arms is also rehab. Don't worry, you will think of some more. Best of luck and have a quick recovery!
  3. let us know how your new tools work out? Show us something you have used them after getting them. Good luck
  4. Interesting RDB.......the law is a funky thing.
  5. I was at the Austin Tandy Leather Factory this morning attending our normal OFC meeting. Prior to leaving got a meet a gentlemen who provided us with a demonstration of the 'New" The Havalon Piranta "Quik-Change" Pro Trophy Skinning Knive. Basically, it is a folding knife that has an interchangable scapel blade. check out their website here: Havalon Piranta Knife Enjoy!
  6. Don't worry. I am posting either pictures or a video on our guild website and let you know. The demonstrator is also giving everyone in attendance, a pattern pack. We are going to print them and I can make them available her for cost. My goal this year as president is to publish each project/pattern we do at the meeting on our website because we have a lot of members that live too far and cannot always attend the meeting. Again, I will post it here when a particular project/pattern is available. Stay tune!
  7. This came into my Facebook page. I thought I would share. I know that most have already been aware of it, but not all. Chess & Checker Board Good luck
  8. My daughter wants to convert a couple of the breast cancer ribbon conchos so that they can be used as a necklace medallion. Is there such an attachment that can be purchase for this conversion? Who sells them? The max that I would be looking at is less than a doezen. Thanks.
  9. Well say! There is very little in this world that hasn't been invented, so I say drove on. I usually find things around me (in everyday land) that inspires me to create them in leather. It could be a fabric purse, wallet, handbag or widget. I always ask myself, "what would this look like in leather?" I will also see things that are made of leather and wonder how it would look like with a slight change here and there or sized down or a portion cut off here. For instance, I found a "sling-bag" or "man's bag" and thought to myself that I wanted to make something like that? I don't know why, it is still sitting in work area done? It just looked like a good design and came out too purdy to deploy. I also look around the internet, books, magazine and such for other ideas? I believe that real artists call it "inspiration?" The man bag that I completed is not called the Baird-Smith bag, not MY bag. Why? Because the design came from a F.O. Baird floral pattern and the saddlebag that I tweeked came from Jesse Smith (I did ask him for permission to bastardize his pattern, and he said okay, anytime!), even though it was eventually 'I' that did the work. Just because we see a picture does not me we steal the design. I believe that we 'steal' the concept and there is a difference. What we see as a picture is an idea of what we would to design and make. But, We have a crafter/artist/maker on this forum who posts something and says "here is my newest creation," but it is "copyrighted" or something like do not remake than we should honor such request. To go a little further, I believe it is 'our' duty to the rest of the member that had the honor to see this design to make the artist known if it is stolen and used by another person. It is our non-legal way of keep the battle lines even. We are the protectors of our craft/hobby/job/living. Now, my final remark about 'stealing designs.' I don't believe that most crafters (not stealers) will take a product and copy it to the inifinate degree, but I do not believe it is possible. Hey, as much as I try, I cannot come close those swivel cuts, tool impressions or moreover the total outcome of the designs. But what I dislike the most is not given credit to those that may have simply posted it for us to have a chance to take it on. I have a bunch of ideas & projects in a book that I carry. Eventually, they will become a reality, but way down the road and I will be willing to share every single one of the designs to be bastardized by all! As it stands, this is my hobby and as such, it is not my main bread winning job. Unfortunately, it take oh, about third seat in my life, so things are slow to getting around here. Eventually, I get them out for ALL to enjoy. Here is my disclaimer. If you see what I have done, would like to do it the "way I did it?" Hell, go for it, but it would be nice to see my name around somewhere between the hello and the dyeing part. Thanks.
  10. Welcome to the Forum! As a newbie to the leather, I would suggest that you stay off eBay for tools. Though someone like WyomSlick (a collector), eBay is very beneficial to him. The reason is that he knows what he is doing when he looks. Just look at his response. eBay is are three types of shoppers. The naive one, the lurker/researcher and the experience shopper. I have been in everyone of these positions, so I speak from experience. I would suggest from my personal experience that you look at calling Siegel of California and ordering the Hackbarth-Barnes starter set for $145 with free shipping. You can order them from the factory direct but you will pay for shipping ($4.95). I purchased this set after purchasing many Tandy Leather Factory, and other Tandy tools and these have been some of my best tools to date.
  11. Welcome to the Forum Subby! Enjoy.

  14. You would think that TEXAS would be interested in leather/saddle making and keeping the craft alive. Go figure.
  15. Welcome to the Forum! Stay safe and sane!
  16. I am working on a 'skeleton' computer case; almost like a leather wrap. I am designing it for a friend of mine who mentors youths in his church. He is teaching them computer technology and he just got a 12.1" Averatec laptop. We talked about a computer bag, but I guess kids are into carrying their stuff by hand (or at least this one is); we eventually decided on a simple skeletal case. I am lining it with suede and making some small storage compartments, business cards, etc. I will eventually share it with my leather guild at a meeting for a project. Down the road, I can see it get on her or maybe another publishing newsletter. I haven't decided. LCSJ will get my money for a subscription, but I doubt it will see any of my projects (long story). I will try to post some pictures here when I get the prototype done and read to deliver. Good luck.
  17. Just wanted to share with you all in Leather land information about our next meeting. We have an awesome presenter who happens to be one our very own members. Those of you new to Leather Worker and/or the Central Texas area. Come join us. The February meeting of Longhorn Trail Leather Guild will be held next WEDNESDAY, February 3, 2010. Please note that this is change from last year's meeting day. The meeting continues to begin at 7:00 pm. And yes, we continue to meet at Tandy Leather Factory in Austin, TX. The February progam will be about leather armor. Our presenter, Alexis, says: In the demo Im going to show patterns, talk about how they are made. I'm going to talk about how I form the chest and back peices and talk about the tools used to do so. I'll talk about how I make and attach the decorations and fasten capes and things. Jason has a set of armor shown in the picture of us two that has some articulated arms. I will show that and talk about how we figured that out. I will also bring a set of small bracers and a pattern of it for everyone to take home with them. I'll take Q&A after that. I have no idea how much time that will take up. If it ends up being a 15 minute presentation we can all do a little bracer project. I'll have Dennis make sure some leather is at the ready just in case. Members are reminded membership renewals are now due. Please see Dennis about renewals as well as new memberships. Membership has it's privileges...for example, "Pellis Arcanae Celatae" See you Wednesday, Sam Jeske LTLG Secretary 2010 Side Note: All are welcome. I will make every attempt to take photographs to post them on our guild website for all to see and use. This is my vision as the incoming President for the guild....Enjoy
  18. Not a book, but I've got an "Airbrushing Leather" with George Hurst & Tony Laier VHS tape. It is used, but in great condition. I also have a few more titles left regarding "how to" leather craft. PM me if your interested.
  19. I called the the A/C here in Texas and I swear he thought I was smoking crack! He has absolutely no clue what I was talking about. He did mention that I could hook up with a saddler or custom maker and they could teach me for free. He said that was kinda like a grant. I then thought that he was smoking crack and didn't bother to give me a "me too!" This Apprenticeship sound AWESOME. Your boy should be so luck!! I appreciate the heads up though.
