  1. A really great tutorial! Thanks so much for posting that. I learned a lot from it. Very detailed and complete.
  2. For Spider and Tom the Swede and all you other skull lovers, I had to give it a try. Airbrushed onto a beetle mask. Hope you like it.
  3. I've been asked to make a mask for a child, and I don't know where to get a form of a child's face (10 yr old) over which I can wet-mold the leather. Any ideas? Thanks,
  4. Wow, a great effect! I'm wondering how you would use it on a mask however. Seems to me the leather needs to lay flat for the water to stay in place?
  5. Very nice. What are you using for the gold paint?
  6. My latest mask, still smelling of acrylic sealer. 3/4 oz leather wet-formed. That's me with the silly grin.
  7. Looking good. Has an art nouveau feel to it, which is a look I like.
  8. Another beauty, Roo! I love the coloring. Of course I'm partial to pearlescence! I too saw Medusa immediately when I saw your mask. I have been thinking of doing one of her myself, as that snakiness really is impressive! Good job, and keep 'em coming.
  9. Very very cool. Thanks Roo, I've bookmarked it.
  10. I love that two-tone effect. Thanks for posting that!
  11. Wow! That's some fancy stitching! You got a lot of control over that machine. Mighty fine work!
  12. Scouter, that is exactly right.
  13. Caroline, I took the tip off years ago and just don't use it. I think I want to buy a siphon feed airbrush so I can switch out colors faster. For painting masks, which model of airbrush does anyone recommend? Thanks,
  14. I am using an Iwata HP-C which I bought almost 30 years ago. Has the technology changed at all since then? I'd be happy to buy a newer airbrush if it would work any better. I'm pretty happy with the Iwata, and am spraying mostly dyes now. I'm just wondering what I might be missing.
  15. Beautifully done! And a nice photo, too. A great combination of leather and wood.
  16. Rough it up with some sandpaper. Drip coffee on it. Antique it.
  17. Good one, Spider. I like the finish with the antiquing and the wrinkles. And the stitching. I could see a cool Frankenstein done like that.
  18. Ha ha! That is a great idea. I'll have to suggest it to whoever ends up with it.

    Beetlemania

Thanks to Leatheroo's post I learned how to airbrush pearlescent powder. Gives it that beetle-like sheen, don't you think?
  20. Wowser, that really takes me back. I first was exposed to leather working at a leather shop/head shop in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe called Geezenstacks in 1972. I was taught how to tool latigo, and dye it exactly that way, with a piece of cloth wrapped around a stick. I don't think I've used that technique in over 30 years. All right, I'm getting old! On the plus side, I'm getting smarter!
  21. Is that rubbing alcohol? I've just always used plain water, but if there's a better way I'd like to know about it. Do you know how it works?Does it just dry out the leather? Thanks,
  22. What do you call Elizabeth I's recorder teacher? A Tudor tooter tutor.
  23. Beautiful work as usual. I like the colors.
  24. Just wet it and twist each one and let them dry that way. If you want a more extreme twist you can tack each piece of fringe to a board at the end to hold it in place till it's dry.
  25. Caroline, absolutely gorgeous! I love the airbrushing! Did you make the stencil yourself?
