  1. Wow that stithing is close to the edge or did you trim it
  2. See that Evo stick now produces "Timebond" which they state "allows time to accurately adjust the the bond" Just wondering if others have tried it and if the end join is as good as standard evo-stick contact adhesive instructions state "align the surfaces carefully, applying no pressure. for slight adjustment hold at edge and move to position using a sliding action" Hopefully gives us learners a second chance
  3. I think the OP has a great idea The trouble is that the experienced people tend to be doing jobs that demand a "Proper machine" where as the newbie is just looking for a cheap solution to make the more basic items be it wallets or tote bags and the like Good advice is buy the best you can afford; but that severely limits what a newbie can but as a selection of tools, so buying cheap tools may be seen as a better option to start with , see if you like the hobby and then as skills grow buy better tools when you understand what you need Does not the same thing apply to sewing machines and cheap hand cranked 99 or 201 may well fit the bill and get used far more than a heavy duty beast that eat's double 5mm veg tan. From following this forum for a few months now, I imagine but have no facts to prove it, that Europeans tend to use lighter weight veg tan to the states probably considering 3mm to be thick and 1 to 2 mm the norm. As I said no proof just looking at what people show on the forum
  4. Rather than the strength of the leather, the wear of the leather may be more important where it constantly moves around You could always test the strength of the leath sample by hanging weights on it say 2 or 3 times what you expect the person to use and dont forget outdoor use has other requirements maybe harness leather
  5. On all your advertising and goods have a label stating "This is the original"made by xxxxx, copies may be cheaper but there is a reason.
  6. Ebay is your friend for small packages of these assorted in a plastic box, or is at least in the UK also Amazon or etsy
  7. I started young in life as a baby
  8. Hi Matt I fully understand, its as you state Someone is making a lot of markup on sewing machines, but admittedly they are probably very slow moving from stock, but just look at these chinese clones on Alibaba https://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?fsb=y&IndexArea=product_en&CatId=&SearchText=leather+industrial+sewing+machine One that court my eye is https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Computerized-Heavy-Duty-Top-Bottom-Feed_60708773885.html?spm=a2700.7724838.2017115.130.635a3677vXIjE5 Trouble is when it goes wrong where do you get them repaired or are they actual exact clones and can use mainline spares etc, you just don't know, but if they are making them at that price then the big names cant cost them much more to buy and then the hefty markup But if they last a few years then the savings may be worth while, but a big gamble all the same Back to me Happy to continue hand stitching and learning slowly, with no need for a machine at present, but just curious about pricing especially when you see the old fashioned cowboy hand machine at very high prices. Still I will save up and buy a couple of stamps, bit cheaper
  9. Thanks Wiz I will look them up I do notice that many of the machines look like rebadged Chinese machines with a few thousand applied to the price, It does make you think how bad as the chinese models as they seem to have all the bells and whistles but only a few hundred dollars, may not be life long machines but then neither are some second hand ones
  10. I have read I think all of Wiz excellent items on sewing machines, but as a newbie still lost about a sub £750 say $1000 US leather sewing machine for say 2 x 3mm veg tan. I under stand servo and walking feet etc but with such a wide range of domestic and industrial machines its hard search The secondhand prices also seem very high with some models having a significant price difference if they include leather in their description Just looking for low cost hobbie machine which will get very little use, but nice to have
  11. I understand that Tiger thread is probably the original 0.5 to 1mm Polyester sewing thread, but it comes at a price; and only vast size rolls, so sold in smaller sizes by flat cardboard wraps There are now plenty of seemingly other makes far cheaper, available from the far East; and I wonder how they stand up to Tiger in strength; and in the sunshine for long life It's easy to say Tiger is good as I always have used it, but have people used the Far Eastern threads and found them lacking in anything, apart from number of colours available at this time Price does not always mean a higher quality, over a lower price, sometimes just more profit for the maker
  12. Connolly leather is the traditional leather for high quality cars and aircraft like Concorde http://connollybros.co.uk/present.html
  13. OK found out the 331K6 and for smaller items the K4 are the leather machines so 5 is no good, but still needs reducing from 2200 rev
  14. Dikman I notice you have a Singer 331 K$, I was looking at this machine actually the K5 but wondered how you reduced the speed to a leather working level, otherwise it looks a handy machine
  15. How much do you want for the lot let shipping be sorted latter with buyer sorting it out
  16. It will be important that it is UV protected thread regardless of Hand or Machine to give it a long life
  17. You can buy offcuts of different Veg tan leather is small sizes on Ebay, Amazon, Etsy etc which is a cheap way of starting to practice The leather you require is called Vegetable Tan and a good size would be around 3mm to start with (7-9 once)
  18. No problem it was just a option to put forward, We don't have your problem over hear as nobody allowed to have handguns, so nobody makes holsters
  19. I do like this paper idea, so simple but so so effective
  20. I think the resin material is far cheaper than 3D printer making and presumably if you make a holster then the customer has the gun, the gun could be covered in film bag and vacuumed into tight fit prior to mold so no silicon touches the gun at any time and only takes about 30-60 min Once you have the mold you can sell copies to all to get the cost back, maybe even making more money on this than making the holster
  21. Model makers often use the actual item to make silicon molds of items they want to replicate and then use the molds to make the exact copy in a hard medium
  22. I thought leatherwork was expensive yesterday and now you tell me I need about 4 of a few stamps and i don't even have a angle grinder! or even a sewing machine Do all you guys have fully comprehensive insurance on your tool boxes or just very rich
  23. Wow, what a great reply to a post Great work Uwe
