Tandy sells piping leather & it's a 1-2oz leather. It looks to me they used rope as the piping, then sewed the 1-2oz leather around the rope. I myself have yet to try & make a rolled leather handle, but I think it could be done with 2-3oz leather.

Thanks WalterF, was the oak leaf & acorn tooling pattern in with the sling template? I've been thinking of ordering some of his patterns. Very nice work. Just love the sandals. You just got to post a pic when both of them are finished.
-
Thanks, I went ahead & ordered 2 veg tan calfskin's, 1 veg tan sheepskin & 1 veg tan goat skin. It gives me or the customer another option to pick from.

Merry Christmas to all!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I appreciate it. Yeah I've come to the conclusion the more practice the better the outcome. I got another idea I'm going to try on the butterfly next. Lol stay tuned & will see if its success or failure. If it's a failure I consider it a lesson learned.

Beautiful work! I love the slings. Almost reminds me of a Don Gonzales pattern. Love the custom birkenstock sandal work as well. Very nice quality stuff coming off you work bend. Just awesome.

Thanks yeah I think I'm going to get some kidskin & the calfskin, just to have another option for uses. I'm also just trying to learn floral & figure carvings & been practicing. I just love working with new veg tan leather. Thanks I appreciate your input & knowledge.

Looks awesome! Nice floral work! May I ask what you used for weight media? Shotshell pellets? Thanks.

I think edge paint would be you best. Don Gonzales neatsfoot oils, then dyes & edge paints for 1 of his last steps from a lot of videos I've watched. I get a high gloss effect on my veg tan leather edges with gum Trag & hand burnishing. A lot of times I'll do a brown dyed holster with the edge dyed black & then gum Trag & burnish. Looks like black glass on the edges.

Nice work! Very smooth, sleek & beautiful. Awesome work.

Ok thanks I'll pick some up to try. Would the calfskin be better suited for pistol holster lining? Thanks.
-
Thanks fredk. I'm trying to get a idea what I might need to use for a thin leather for card pockets & stuff like that. I thought maybe the calfskin being tight grained & such would be better for card pockets & linings if need be. Thanks I appreciate your knowledge & input.

Looks good! I like it. Is inverted leather carvings, where the figure/picture looks like its sitting on top of the leather. Appears to be sticking up/out. Thanks.

Guys & gals I'm curious as what I can use for wallet linings, clutch wallet & purse linings & projects of such? A lot of guys recommend veg tan kangaroo or goat skin. Well kangaroo is a bit out of my price range at this point. I was thinking about veg-tan calfskin for my linings of projects, or even sheepskin. Can some of you professionals give me some advice/direction to go. I mainly only use veg-tan leathers at this point for my projects. I was thinking veg-tan calfskin would be tight grained & also would dye well. Thanks any & all help would be greatly appreciated.

Consew 206RB-5 - alternate pulleys?
DieselTech replied to Tsiatko's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
@Tsiatko how did your speed reducer setup go on your Consew rb-5. If you got pics to share I would love to see them. Also could you list the parts you bought to perform your update to your Consew RB-5 sewing machine. Thanks. -
Well practice butterfly #2 with a super shene resist. I think it looks better. Lol too bad i cant merge parts for 1butterfly to the other or vice versa. I'm thinking for my 1st two figure carvings, they are not overly bad.
-
Are them the checkered Barry King bevelers? I see BK has lined bevelers too by that leather stamping. Thanks for letting me know your most common use size of bevelers. I appreciate it.
-
Yeah I started buying some Barry King tools here & there. I might buy his #2 starter set, think its 18 tools total. BK curved thumb print set I'm starting to like. I got mostly high end stamps, lmao probably more then I need. But I'm starting to find out the stamps got uses in other spots. My 2nd butterfly looks better, I think. I'm doing a super shene resist on it. I'll post some follow up pics 2mrow.
-
Thanks RockRash I appreciate the comment & encouragement. I did swivel cut another 1 & the swivel cuts look better. I Also think a set of steep angle bevelers would help. I'll practice some more. Lmao I guess at least it somewhat resembles a butterfly.
-
By any chance got any pics of your project to share with us all. Also I've read here recently on the forum where a couple people were having fiebings dye issues. Not taking right or being blotchy.
-
Thanks 327fed, nice setup you got there. Is the big stamp a makers stamp or a stamp for like Revolutionary reenactment society? Thanks for sharing them with me. I appreciate it.

There was an attempt ...portmanteau round leather bag
DieselTech replied to Rossr's topic in Show Off!!

Guys & gals dont laugh to bad, but I'm trying to learn & teach myself figure/floral carving thru reading & videos. Can any of you professionals give me a couple pointers on carving a butterfly? I'm trying to do a coin purse for Christmas & would like to carve a butterfly on the back of it. Thanks any & all help/pointers will be greatly appreciated.
