Hello, i am just starting out and i figured out real fast that this is a VERY expensive hobby starting up, but I've found and made some things to cut cost that i wanted to share with yal to help out, ill label whats free, and what i payed for and how much. 1. FREE... wine box from any liquor store.just ask them if they have one to give to you, they just throw them out. Makes a tool holder, storage box.. anything you want, just be creative. 2. CHEAP...Bar soap containers. 1$ at walmart... for holding all your small stuff you want to keep separate. Like the swivel knife and stamps. 3. CHEAP/FREE.Trash bags/walmart bags. Used to lay down under leather when dying. Be careful with walmart bags though, alot of times they'll have holes and not as flat. CHEAP... tool storage boxes.. bought a pack of 4 of them at walmart for 9 bucks. Good for keeping things organized. FREE/CHEAP... old white t-shirts.. instead of throwing away the old white work shirts. Keep them cut them up. Good for tons of stuff.. buffing towels, speading glue and dye, what ever you can think of. CHEAP... stanley box knife. Couple bucks at wal mart and you can get 50 blades for 5 bucks i believe. FREE/CHEAP... BOOKS! Scribd.com 8 bucks a month and you get a ton of books(including al stohlman)..you can also download them onto your phone, using your free 30 day trial(wink, wink).. and if you cancel membership before the month is over you dont pay a dime. Again (wink wink) its not letting me put up the pics so if you want to see them, or have any questions, send me a message and ill send them to you somehow! Addition! Ill add stuff as i think of them and do them... The internet/youtube!! I have already learned a ton of stuff off youtube, and when you have a better understanding of what your doing and how to do it you'll waste less products and save money... Tandy leathers offers a free beginner's class go take it!!

I have watched a couple very helpful videos on tool sharpening. However, I just want to be sure there isn't a different way of doing this : My edge groover is about as dull as I would ever imagine one could be. There is quite a lot of resistance when I use it, is that normal for it to require quite a lot of pressure to create a groove, or does it indeed need to be sharpened somehow? I've attached an image of a Japanese make that I believe is the same/similar to my own. Thanks!

Hi all, let me introduce myself alittle. I am retired due to movement disability and pretty much home bound. I have worked with Paracord for a few yrs making collars/leashes and halters etc.. I have gotten a bit bored with that and want to expand my work to include braided leather show leads and training leads. I will use Kangaroo lacing with a cord for the show leads and have made one pretty much as a practice one with 3/32 size lacing. I love working with it! Was certainly a learning experience Finally to my questions. I have been told my one marker that all lacing should be beveled, well I tried and no way could I bevel the 3/32 and the picture shows the result of no beveling but did roll it. I have since gotten 1/8 inch kangaroo and it looks like it should be beveled but I cannot manage that. So would like to get lots of advise on that or even a place I can buy it already beveled. Next BIG issue is I suck at knots! The turkhead shown on the handle in picture is way too big and I really need a smoother transition, help, guidence here would be awesome. Thank you for your help in advance.

Hello all, Firstly, I would like to say what an invaluable resource this forum is! Now, onto the topic. I have been hand carving soles out of sole bend by hand for the better part of the year. I was using Stanley knife, wetting the leather and then rasping, glassing and soaping the edges to make it look smoother. However, it was never as professional as I wanted to look with faint marks of where the knife had cut still visible. Today, I finally bought a bandsaw to cut through this leather and hopefully have that super vertical finish. I tried a few and it certainly looks better (just some slight marks from where I held the leather a bit too long). I am going to rasp & glass the edges to see if I can get rid of those. So I guess what I'm looking for is any tips or tricks people have to get that really professional looking sole edge, how to use the bandsaw properly (I imagine it takes practice to get a really steady hand) and any other information people have to creating soles! Thanks,

Hey Gang, I've done some research on which tools I will need to start learning how to work with leather. There is a Tandy relatively close, but little in the way of much else. I ended up purchasing a kit online for very cheap ($25 CAN), and I'm hoping the quality won't be too terrible. I think it was a good decision, with several of the tools being on my list. I'm sure there are some in the kit I didn't necessarily need. Thoughts? I'm interested in being able to make wallets, knife sheaths, harnesses, and belts. I still planned on buying a mallet, saddlers needles, thread, wax, glue, utility and precision knife..

There's a wallet that I made real quick I seen one and I decided to try it to see how the pattern actually turned out and how it holds out. The white stitching got muddy as it always does using Tandy thread. Yes I realize that is too large but that's okay. Also in the first picture are all of the handmade tools that I used in making the wallet the only thing not included was my new stitching horse. I found that the wallet will accommodate 6 cards and plenty of bills. if the pattern looks familiar it is although it is a combination of two different styles. Hopefully no one will be offended by it. is a picture or two of the muddy stitching no matter what I have tried this thread that I'm using always goes muddy. Yes I have added extra length to the thread to try to avoid that also sealing the Finish etc etc..

I have a fairly new hand crank, 6" blade Cowboy Leather Splitter. This leather splitter is in fantastic working and physical condition. The blade is very sharp, it is oiled up and ready to split. It was an impulse buy on my part. I haven't used it much as I thought I would, since I bought it. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about it. I'm willing to sell it for $1100 (not including shipping) I paid $1395 +tax for it. If you live in the Dallas, Texas area you are more than welcome to come check it out or pick it up. I will be willing to ship, at the buyers expense. It's pretty heavy, and I'm not to sure how much shipping would cost, but if you are interested I could find out.

I'm selling some of my tools: 1. Vergez-Blanchard pricking wheel set. Included sizes are: 7, 8, 10, 12. - $150 2. Vergez-Blanchard adjustable edge creaser. - $45 (SOLD) Both tools are current, newer models. Both are like new. I used the pricking wheel with 10 spi twice. The other sizes are untouched. Thought I will be doing more curves, but I don't. I used edge creaser maybe a dozen times, but it looks like new. I bought these directly from Blanchard about 2 years ago and they have been sitting idle in my tool box all this time. I'm trying to fund some new tools, and decided to part with these. Prices include paypal fee and shipping cost to anywhere within continental US. If you are buying from outside the continental US, send me DM and I will quote you what USPS will charge. If you are in Boston area, we can meet in person and do transaction in cash.

I picked up an assortment of leather tools and these were in with them. Wood handle (not sure what type) but has flat side similiar to Japanese awls, Metal looks and feels like possibly surgical type steel, round and very sharp needle like tip. Only marks are Grey Ghost 1,2 and 3. Anyone have any idea about age or uses for them?

Do you know what this is? Is it complete? If not, can parts be purchased to make it complete? How do you use it? So many questions I know. Thank you for any info you can share.

I'm trying to locate someone with the knowledge to repair my father's hammer handle for Christmas. He found it when I was a kid and it's his favorite one to work with. I'm willing to mail it out.

Anyone have a design for a portable workstation?Cant leave my tools at the new house until I move in -- place got broke into and lost all my tools, and wife cant stand tools in the rental house and me messing up her kitchen! Found an old design in a 1950 magazine, but was wondering if anyone had any other ideas. If not just going to do a 24 by 26 6 in deep box, with a drop front lid Be easy to move around until I get in the new house, have a 30 in by 6 foot table started there.

Well i wanted a lacing pony but didnt want to spend any money. So i made this one, the idea is that its easy packable and portable, parallel jaws for maxium friction so minimum pressure needed. Its just two boards, rounded and split leather added, at the bottom spacers added, just turn them around for no space, one layer spacer or two layer spacer. To keep jaws parallel to your work. Then tiny sash cramps, to add pressure but to also use as support on top of your knees, this way you can adjust the height perfectly.
