It has been a while since I poster here since I have mostly been focusing on wood working. The other day I decided to do a little crossover project and make a wood and leather messenger bag. The gussets are made out of Ambrosia Maple. The leather is 5/6oz. Overall dimensions are roughly 12x15. This is a project for me, but I've already had a lot of interest in it. I may make a few more.

Ok as there are more then a few images and I am still working on this bag thought I would just post the imgur addy I have for this project Its a combo of Montana hide from tandy, and sheep skin as a liner I am just kind of stuck on how to hook the shoulder strap to the other bloody d-ring but I will figure it out will post more photos of the finished product. http://imgur.com/a/ywKx0

Design based on Stohlman art, altered slightly for this project. Magnetic closure, two pouch sling bag for notebook and pistol. Didn't ask why he needed to carry a notebook and a pistol.

New Bag I finished for a customer. Its not for everyone, but he asked for it and it came out nice I think. False buckle with parachute clip behind buckle strap. So buckle is secured but it quick releases which is cool. -

A small bag, pattern cut by swivel knife and colored with a dark antique. None too fancy belt loops on the back, but functional. All done from scratch incl coloring and handsewing. -
Hi everyone! Need any advice I can get. I am making this bag for a gentleman and he wants a false buckle. I have attached photos of what I am working with. Two straps (one on each side) that have a buckle attached but a magnet underneath that is what closes the bag. The buckle is just for looks which is what he asked for. The magnet underneath magnetizes to the spiked studs. But after doing this I realized that once he holds the handle that it will open and the magnets will not be strong enough to bear the weight. What is my solution here? Open to ideas but really would rather not place any plastic hardware on this bag, if possible. Thank you for your help!!!!

Is there a advantage to one type of briefcase bottom over another? I have enough leather to make the case I want with one piece for the front, bottom and back, sewing in only the sides, and having only 3 pieces of leather to deal with, this seems easiest; it seems most folks sew in a separate bottom and sides using, then, 5 pieces of leather. The only disadvantage I see could be wearing out the bottom - however, since it will be a laptop case I don't think it will spend much time on the bottom - mostly laid down on it's back. You know, typing this out has convinced me to use one piece for the main bag and sew in only the sides........................................ but I am going to wait and see if there is a good reason from you knowledgeable folks on why I should not do that. Thanks, so much, I'm a wood carver dabbling in leather and would really appreciate the advice from leather workers. Phil

I am lacking expertise in leather making and would appreciate your comments. Exhibit A is showing the overall look of the bag. The whole bag is made of ~2 mm thick leather (easy to fold for storage). Shoulder straps are ~4 mm. Exhibit B shows the main problem with the front buckles: (i) they are too thin (~2 mm) and therefore bend (ii) they have no stitching on the edges further compromising the rigidity. It makes the buckle hard push through the loop, as it constantly bends, it also looks ... em "unfinished". Exhibits C and D also show "flaps" of the bag that have no stitching on the sides. Again, in my eyes, this makes the bag feel "unfinished", although I am not sure how functionally justifiable this intuition is. I am considering for asking for corrections to be made and would appreciate an unbiased professional opinion. -

Finally got brave enough to try making something besides bracelets with the Horween I have. Based off of figure 66 illustration on page 44 in the book Purses in Pieces, I made the sides suede since it's strong and flexible, plus I had just gotten a nice dark brown hide that matches the Horween pretty nicely. I cut the lacing with a straight edge and a rotary cutter, I'm definitely going to have to get a lace cutter if I keep doing this because my consistency was crap. Still, I think I did pretty well considering I couldn't find my calipers (where DOES this stuff go?!) and I was making each hole one by one with a nail that had been flattened out and filed to make the lacing holes. I think it will flatten out a bit as it's used, right now it's keeping the shape of being rolled up plus the tension from the lacing. -

Here are a few things I have created recently. There is a Hair on Laptop/messengers bag, with zippered front panel that allows access to internal pockets mounted to the front inner wall, and storage for briefs and papers built into the zippered front panel, the lid also has a hidden panel with glove snaps for additional storage of briefs and papers, there is an internal pocket for a laptop (17" laptops fit awesome in this) and a rear storage pocket for books, or notebooks, with a final pocket on the rear wall to allow additional papers or briefs to be stored. LOTS AND LOTS of room in this bag. The hair on cow hide is in purple and black, and the sides are made of laminated pieces of veg tanned that have been dyed to match the colors of the hair on hide. I laced the sides with premium calfskin lace and did it in an Australian double loop stitch. The pencil bag is made out of the selvage of the hair on hide, and is a wide mouth design. The clutch is likewise made out of the selvage from the same hide and pairs very nicely. -

I was recently asked by a friend to make him something with alligator skin. I've never worked with this material before, but I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it can look blended in with other projects. Not sure if you would agree, but I thought I'd share some photos of the bag in case anyone else is interested in getting creative with exotic skins like alligator. Also the skin I used in this piece is from a fresh water alligator's tail piece. I got some of my design ideas from a Japanese artists piece and some of my own experimentation. -

Really pleased with the finish product but I had an awful time lacing it. / -
Hello All! So I am happy and not happy with my current project. I am heading on an unexpected trip and was looking to buy a travel bag when I realized I could make my own. This is the product, but I had to rush it because I literally had a few hours last night and today to get it done. It's not perfect but for my first bag I am fairly happy with it! It is predyed goatskin from Tandy's. They had a sale and I liked the color for a wallet and finally found a project to use some more of it. I started with the concept using paper bags to do a mock up, then made the templates from poster board, then moved on to the final product. I am the most happy with the handle, I think that is the best part of it. The lid is by far the ugliest but that's because I started with the idea that I would use straps to keep it closed and then switched it to a zipper so it totally threw off my measurements, plus stitching the zipper on also skewed it a bit. Oh well, it's for my use only
