  1. Has anyone used a spring type hemming foot for a Consew 206? I'm making chaps using 1200D Cordura and the hemming sure takes a lot of time, I'm folding and using plastic clips right now. Thanks in advance, George
  2. Hello, I am setting up my consew 206rb-5 to handle some 138 thread with a 22 needle. I am having an issue with the top thread getting caught below somewhere on the top of the bobbin case or holder or who knows, but it will only do maybe a stitch or two then start shredding. Bobbin thread seems fine though. - I did thread the needle left to right - I am holding thread tight for first few stitches - Bobbin is thread so when you pull it rotates counter clockwise. -Tensions seem ok, but who knows Any ideas? One other weird thing that may or may not be related. Even without this thread problem (without thread in the machine) the handwheel is very hard to operate. I usually have to put my foot a little on the pedal while using my hand to pull the wheel. Does that seem a bit odd? Thanks for the help!
  3. Howdy! I'm new to this site but have already found the knowledge of the collective group to be very helpful. Up to this point, I've hand stitched all of my items--never used or owned an industrial sewing machine. Due to a steady increase of orders and a pesky case of tendonitis, I'm looking to purchase a sewing machine to aid in production. I work with both chrome and veg tanned leather but won't be needing the machine for anything thicker than a total of 3/8" or 1/2" thick. Based on what I've read so far, I'm leaning toward a walking foot machine with a servo motor and speed reducer. I'd love one that can do "everything" but know that's not how it works, so I'm looking for a reliable one (would use it daily) that can be used to sew leather portfolios, leather tote bags, and leather binders. See attached pictures for some examples of my items. I'm most concerned about whether the machine will be able to sew the middle piece of my binders as the stitch needs to be pretty close to the 3 ring metal piece and I'm not sure if this will be a problem (see pic). Any input on this?? I've been reading a lot of these threads and have seen the Consew 2-6rb-5 given several thumbs up.Based on the needs I've mentioned above, do you think the Consew would do the trick? Any other machines you'd recommend? When I'm ready to pull the trigger, are there any suggestions on where to purchase? I've seen some members mention "dealers" on this site that help set up the machine(s) so it's specifically tweaked for leatherwork--are there specific individuals I should talk to about that? Any experiences (good or bad) with purchasing off of eBay or other online retailers? I don't have tons of time to spend troubleshooting a machine, so I need one that's reliable or at least one with good custom support in case I get in a jam. ANY suggestions, advise, tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!
  4. Hi, I am new to the forum and wondering what sewing machine to buy...Techsew 2750, Cowboy 227R, or a used Consew 227. I have never used a leather sewing machine (only my home husquvarna that I am wearing out). I make purses, bags, wallets, journals, etc... things like this. I also tool on 4-5oz leather and then (hand) sew that onto the bag. It is my understanding that any of the above machines will do what I'm needing, I'm just not sure which one to buy. It's a huge purchase and I want to get the right one. Thanks!!
  5. Hi. Prior to buying my machine (Consew 226R), I did a lot of reading here so I just want to start by saying I really appreciate this forum. While everything worked just fine when I bought it, and loaded it in my truck, I'm afraid the 100+ miles of driving may have jarred something loose. Now, whenever I press the START button, the motor accelerates and reaches full RPM w/o any problems. But as soon as I release the button, it starts winding its way back down. So my first thought is it's a switch problem, but before I start fiddling with it, I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this? Thanks! Salvisa
  6. Up for sale is a Consew 206RB-5, less than 2 years old. Was used for stitching leather watch straps exclusively and was set up for that purpose. I bought it brand new from a local sewing shop. It has all the bells and whistles: -new table, -new servo motor, -new reducer pully system installed (sews nice and slow for those tight corners), -new rolling glide, -nice small width FLAT BOTTOM walking feet (perfect for leather work), -tons of bobbins. Machine was always lubricated properly. Hasn't seen much use for a machine that is built to be abused by sweatshops. Will come with tons of leather sized sewing needles and tons of different color #138 thread. Local pick up only at this point. Ludicrously fair price: $900 USD. Please contact me directly for quicker responses: punchapp@gmail.com (please also note my entire leather workshop is for sale, everything must go. msg me if your local and looking to set up your own shop! I've got it all set up to make beautiful watch straps, as I made Panerai watch strap for about three years until I grew tired of my hobby.) I
  7. Entire Leather Workshop Must Go. If you live near South Florida (BROWARD COUNTY) and are looking to open or equip your shop, I've can save you thousands! I made beautiful watch straps for Panerai, Rolex, Omegas, etc. and sold them through my Etsy boutique for years, but every hobby must come to an end and this one has run its course for me. I was able to make 300-400 a week doing these straps at night, but it has taken a toll on my family life and now its got to stop. If you are looking to get into or have just gotten into leather work or making leather watch straps, and are looking to take it to the next level... this is the post for you. I have here: -Consew 206RB-5 Leather Sewing Machine (setup specifically for leather work -new table, -new servo motor, -new reducer pully system installed (sews nice and slow for those tight corners), -new rolling glide, -nice small width FLAT BOTTOM walking feet (perfect for leather work), -tons of bobbins.) -Solid Steel Manual Leather Press (for punching) -Solid Wood Stitch Pony (with leather cover) for hand saddle stitching your work -OLFA Cutting Pad -OLFA Rotary Blade and 6 extra new blades -Elfikta Leather Tool Grinder and Edge Smoother (motor powered) -A bunch of custom Plexiglass laser cut leather strap templates - 5 sets of custom made clicker dies for leather watch straps (mostly panerai sizes, 26mm straight, 26/24 taper, 26/22 taper, 24/22 taper, 24 straight.) 8. Can anyone please help...have a highlead GC22618-8B....it was sewing well with a T40 thread....put a T20 on it with a 2.5mm hide.......it was fine for an interior pocket on a tote.....I had also fiddled with presser foot cos it was marking hide with two layers of this hide...then I went to overstitch one layer of the hide, and hey presto ...jamming.every time...the thread is coming up back through the walking foot as well as bunching underneath!,, any ideas..I have cleaned bobbin casing...rethreaded and oiled it....it seems to be picking up bobbin thread fine...renewed and double checked needle....even gone back to thinner thread..still doing the same! Is it tension or timing...excuse the metric , Im in Australia..best Regards
  9. Hi guys, I'm looking for a UK based machine dealer that carries Consew and Juki. Can someone point me in the right direction? Has anyone dealt with these guys before: http://www.anglosewing.co.uk/ ? Thanks!
  10. Attached is a document with Notes on Timing a Consew 229 post base industrial sewing machine, including details about what goes wrong when the thread piles up above the needle, or when there's looping below the fabric that can't be solved by ordinary tension adjustments. It's my version of notes about what is not already in the manual for the machine, and what a novice might want to know when venturing into this job. This is written for an absolute beginner, in what I hope will be viewed as very simple language. If any person has this machine and cannot locate the manual, try sending me a note at radavich at moscow.com, and I'll try to locate my source or will copy and mail to you. Roberta Timing Consew 229.doc
  11. How do you change the sttich legnth for consew 229. I read in the instruction similar to singer 111. To push and hold the plunger to lock the notch and keep truning the pulley in the machine. I just found out that the old machine I bought has no plunger to lock it. Can I use any metal or screw driver to stock it to the notch? Kinda scary when you are not sure what it is . The pulley that in the manual, is that the hand wheel of the sewing machine? I bought this machine and the guy I bought from never told me about it and I never think of asking cause I presume that would not be a problem.. attach is the pic.
  12. Title says it all. Does anyone have specifics on where the needle should be in relation to the shuttle hook during operation? I can see where it's adjusted, just want to put it in factory specs. Manual doesn't address this specifically. Thanks so much! Bill
  13. I recently picked this up from an auction to restore. I have worked on many Singers but this is my first Consew - although I am told they are largely the same - this one may be close to the singer 153. I cannot find the model number but it appears to be closest to the Consew 227 with out reverse. I finally was able to get the stripped screw out of the hook so I can remove debris and give it a good cleaning - yeah. It sews but is skipped a stitch. I am hoping someone can confirm the model number and maybe send a manual for this, I have downloaded the only consew 227 manual from the consew site which is for a 227r - however this one appears different. In the upper cavity near the balance wheel, there are some markings (0, 0) that I assume is for timing but the manual would sure help. And the safety clutch looks a bit weird.... Anybody have any leads on verifying the model number? Thanks.

    Consew 227

I'm looking to get rid of my consew 227. I've had it for a year now, used it to make bags and wallets. I'm in need of something that can sew thicker leather, as the 227 is comfortable at 1/4 inch. I just had it serviced at IMSCO in san antonio, and it's working smooth. New hook, stitch regulator works. It's on a custom stand with casters. $1,000.00 or best offer. I can deliver up to an hour away for an extra $50. Anything more and you'll need to come get it yourself. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/purezit/IMG_20150103_170309539.jpg -Alden
  15. Hi everyone - I've read completely through the guide to choosing a sewing machine, and have it narrowed down to the consew 206RB and the Juki 1541s, and now I'm stuck. They are both around the same price (although I found a dealer in Dallas who has a Juki clone called a Typical GC0605A for about $300 less). I make fashion style body harnesses, corsets, belts, and some garments. So far I've been sewing on a Janome MC6600, which does ok most of the time with very light leather, but gives up over thicker seams and occasionally just decides it doesn't want to sew something that its been working on all day with no problem. I generally don't sew anything more than single 5-8oz pieces or multiple pieces around 10 ounces total, and I figure if I really need to, then I can hand stitch pieces heavier than that. For the heavy pieces its usually not being attached to anything, but is decorative edge stitching. Which machine do you think sounds more appropriate? I would be upgrading to the servo motor for either. Thanks so much for any advice.
  16. I have a Consew 226R-2 walking foot sewing machine with a servo motor for sale. Runs like a charm. $1,000. Southern California local pick up only. E-mail me for photos or questions. Vanasemail@gmail.com
  17. Hi guys, I just got a quote for a Consew 206RB-5 with silent servo motor from a UK supplier for £1,950.00 plus vat. That's over $3200 with tax... Seems pretty steep compared to US prices. Does anyone have any experience purchasing equipment in the UK? The supplier is www.anglosewing.co.uk. Are such high prices normal for England? At that price I would be better off buying one here and putting it in a shipping container, but I'd rather work with a local dealer and avoid the hassle of shipping overseas. Thanks!
  18. Hi, I just acquired a Consew 206rb-1. I paid $500 for the head, motor, and table, and it works great. However, I need more control. I am looking for some suggestions for a good servo motor that will work with this machine. I'm a school teacher so it can't cost an arm and a leg . Thanks.
  19. I've got a Consew 206rb-5 with all the bells and whistles. I am not including any pics because the machine is in beautiful condition and you can just image search one if you want to see it. I will provide pictures to any interested buyer of detailed mods. This machine was upgraded to include: speed reducer/torque increaser (2 belt system) http://www.allbrands.com/products/13324-superior-sr-2-speed-reducer-3-6-9-pulley-sr2-insta servo motor ($160) roller edge guide ($100) I also modified the servo motor so it has a much wider range in the pedal. You can sew as slow as you want in the beginning and also run at bobbin winding speed at the other end of the pedal. Machine is finely tuned and I have also had several walking feet modified to have lower profile and be easier to use in tight in spots. For the record. I love this machine it is my daily work horse and has been well taken care of. I am only selling because I hope to attend a Leather Arts School in Italy for the rest of the year. That includes selling off everything I own and moving in a backpack with my designs and a laptop. Don't want to store tools. I have a unique request of the interested buyer. I would prefer to keep this machine until I depart for classes. That would mean that the machine would be available for pick up the week of the 16th-22nd of February. If this works for you or any where around there I would appreciate you contacting me. I am firm at $1000 for the machine. It truly is ready to work! Its all going towards Tuition! Thanks for viewing. 20. Ok, so now this! and I think this might have something to do with how I threaded the machine?? Maybe.. Anyway, so when I sew the stitches on top of the leather look like the stitches that should be on the back of the leather, and vice versa..So the nicer looking top stitches are actually on the flesh side of the leather.. I could always just sew on the flesh side, but that doesn't really solve the problem.. Also its having a tendency to break my thread as well.. What does everyone think?? Thanks Todd
  21. Hello, Recently purchased a consew 206rb-5 and this site has been a great help, but I am a little confused about the needles. I have read many places on this board that "135X16 is for leather and135X17 is the needle type used for fabric". I went to my local sewing shop and they said I was confused and that "135x16" and "135x17" are sewing needles "systems", not sizes. I am looking for the proper needles to sew leather and canvas with #138 thread. I know I probably want a size #22 needle, but the "system" thing is still confusing me. What is the difference between a "135x16" and "135x17" needle? Any help is greatly appreciated! -Grant
  22. I've been lurking around the site for a while and recently decided to join so I could ask a few questions and see some informational pictures. Hey everybody! Im a young civil-engineer and ive been handcrafting leather products for friends and family on the weekends and some nights. Some of my gear landed in the right hands so Ive decided to leave my current job and start a new venture. I'm launching a start-up and only have experience with hand-stitching. Honestly, I hate to break away from hand stitching but some products will require it. I need to find a machine to evaluate cost, so I can program it into my line-item budget (my original budget provided to the investors ranged the machine from $1500-$3000. What I'll be making: Handbags; "totes"; satchels; rucksacks; purses; clutches; duffel-bags; Belts; wallets (probably still going to hand stitch these) but open to machine sewing; in-pocket phone cases; luggage/bag straps: Some of these products (30%) will be a mix of waxed canvas and leather, but most will be completely comprised of leather. I'm using Horween Cordovan Shell for smaller items and good quality veg-tan hides for bags. The weight will range from 3-4oz leather for small items to 9-10oz for larger items. I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but I'm willing to invest in a good machine. I've looked at the Cowboy 4500 and some Juki and Consew machines, but since I have absolutely no experience with machines, I don't know what to get and don't know if I need anything like that.. I've been to several design-studios in the past few months and they all seem to have long arm table-top machine with compound walking feet. I'm not stuck on any machine or any style. I'm up for any and all recommendations. I'll be hiring a few interns who have fashion-design experience and of course multi-material sewing experience, but that will be in 2014... I'd like to find and buy the machine now to start familiarizing myself with it. When I'm in the full swing of things, I'll have to buy more machines as well. However, I need something that is somewhat multi-purpose. I'm pretty proficient in PAD 5.0 drawings/files and also Adobe Illustrator and CAD if anyone ever has questions on that or how that could use it with product design. Disclaimer: highly-technical sewing lingo will fly directly over my head. I apologize for my ignorance,
  23. My Consew 206RB-3 came with one foot - a walking foot with two toes and with teeth on the bottom. That is the limit of what I know about it. Is there literature anywhere about feet for this machine? I'd like to know what's available, how to identify each foot, how to tell if the foot I'm using isn't right for the job, and what IS right. Golly, I wish someone would make a how-to-use-it DVD for this machine. The manual is so lame.
  24. Hi everyone, I want to get into some upholstery and leather work. I picked up a machine from a divorce issue. The guy bought it a few years ago with the intention to start using it but never did. So it is like new. It's a Consew 255RB-3 .... walking foot with all the gadgets that come with it still sealed in the plastic. Does anyone know anything about these machines or did I buy a donkey ? What needles and # thread should I be using on this machine for upholstery / vinyl / leather ? Thanks Sam
  25. I have a Consew 206rb-5 in tremendous condition and has been well maintained. I upgraded the clutch motor to a servo motor and love its performance. I would not be selling the machine if I hadn't found an artisan I like at such a great price. This machine has served me very well. Includes, table, servo motor, and all accessories. I also have an extra mechanical clutch motor I would consider sending with it. I am located in Portland OR feel free to call! 715-271-9558 item is to large to ship so I would prefer pickup only or I could deliver within 50-100 miles. This machine has provided all my needs up to currently. I am only upgrading. Still very happy with the machine! Asking price is $1000 Tony
