  1. I'm trying to sew 2 layers of 1" nylon webbing and am getting the top thread showing on the bottom regardless of how tight I set the top tension; See images attached. The black thread is topside, green thread is bottom side. Both threads are size 69 bonded nylon. In the image of the bottom side I've tightened the top tension a little bit each time, until the final row where I maxed-out the tension. As you can see there is virtually no difference. I've tried two different needle types with the same results: Organ DP x 17 125/20 and Groz-beckert 110/18 RG. The organ needle is the largest one I currently have, and should be adequate for the size of thread I'm using. I'm wondering if the type of webbing I'm using requires a specific size or needle point? Things I've tried with no improvement on the bottom side stitches: Increased top tension all the way Reduced bottom tension to almost nothing Re-timed my machine Removed and cleaned the bobbin case/assembly I will also add, the tension unit is brand new, but I did take the time to calibrate it so tension engages and disengages properly with the knee lift. Images of the tension assembly attached. Is there something special about setting up this machine that I've overlooked? Any recommendations on things to try would be greatly appreciated.
  2. I am looking to replace this single needle straight stitcher with a similar machine which has a reverse lever, i.e. 555 or 5550. Have tons of $$ invested in needles and feet, so staying with the same model. This is why this one is for sale. When I got it, it was set up for blanket quilting with a ring foot on a quilting table top (where the machine is mounted straight in front of you, not sideways, and there is a round cut-out in front of the machine for the operator's body). Will post pictures once I get home. Make: Juki Model: DDL 553 Needle system: the manual lists DBx1 but I always used 16/257 size 14 - 18, tried size 20 with TEX 90 thread, and it worked as well, but YMMV. The longest stitch is 6 SPI which is probably a bit misleading as it looks more like 5mm, the shortest is 30 SPI and it's really, really short (perfect for quality dress shirts). Adjustment is by pressing a button on top and turning the pulley. What it does well: This is a very versatile machine which does perfect straight stitching on medium to heavy weight textiles. What it has challenges with: climbing onto and off very thick seams on heavy denims. It may skip stitches before and after the thick part, especially if there is a simultaneous turn. I.e. if you are sewing jeans inseam, you would want to take it nice and slow. That all may be just caused by me not knowing how to properly tune the machine, but I want the buyer to be aware of anything I know about it. It did work fine on light upholstery leather using teflon or roller foot, but again, had challenges with crossing thick seams. Asking $100 CDN, open to reasonable offers. Prefer local pickup in Brampton or I can deliver after payment is received in the West end GTA, but shipping can be negotiated as well. Note: only the head is for sale, no oil pan, no K legs. If you want, I can throw in a free clutch motor, of which I have a couple to choose from: one Hitachi (the faster one) and one I can't remember the make (the slower one). I can also throw in a green quilting table top in very nice condition, say for $40. If you want teflon feet, I have several for $3 a piece. Also have a medium swing-out roller foot set including throat plate and feed dog for $15. These accessories are not offered separately and only sold with the machine head.
  3. Does anyone have experience with clearing out stuck thread in a JUKI 1508/LU-563N? Here's a picture of the thread stuck under the bobbin case. I can't seem to remove the bobbin case at ALL. I can turn the handwheel and the case itself spins just fine. Picture of the jam:
  4. Selling my JUKI LU-563 walking foot industrial sewing machine. I purchased it from a sewing machine servicing company who refurbished the machine in 2014. Machine is setup to sew leather. The machine works great. Comes with table and 3/4 hp digital servo motor. (Sewquiet 5000). Motor currently has a larger pulley to increase torque, but original pulley and belt is still available with it. Will come with a bunch of black and white M size pre-wound bobbins as well as magnetic LED light and leather point needles. Instruction manual and parts list and thread tree included. She may not be the prettiest, but she does the job! The table is not great, and bows down in the middle. I was given the table for free with the head, so passing that along. I will include the 1/2 hp clutch motor that came with it for free as well if wanted (just collecting dust on the shelf). Price is $900. Located in Sugar Hill, GA (45 min north of Atlanta). Message me or post with any questions, ill do my best to answer as quick as I can.
  5. Hi there, This is my first post. I have read various threads over the last 3 month in preparation for making up my mind on what machine to buy and I finally settled on a used Juki 1541S. She is something like four years old, was used less than 50 hours for making cushions and seems generally to be in a good shape as far as I can say and here my problems start as this is my very first industrial machine and I do not really know anything about it. The first problem I have now is that after oiling the machine (I do not think that I put too much oil on the machine) I find oil on the backside of my sewing and is look like the bobbin thread is a bit oily too. Any idea on how to troubleshoot this? Thanks a lot Martin
  6. I finally bought a sewing machine, a Juki 1541s after months of deciding witch one to buy. I was going to buy one from one of the banner ads but didn't want to pay shipping. I found out I live 30min away from Keystone sewing and could pick one up . After a couple emails and a few phone calls to @Gregg From Keystone Sewing helped me pick out a machine that would suit my needs. The level of customer service that this company provides is just not found anymore, Gregg spent over 2 whole hours going over the entire machine with me. I actually felt bad for taking so much of his time up, but he insisted that I was comfortable before I left. When I first got there and walked threw the old wooden doors I was nicely greeted by his mother running the front desk. There shop has an old style vibe with the solid wood floors, the place probably hasn't changed much since the day it opened except all the new machines lining both sides of the store. I told Gregg it reminded me of one of the machine shops I used to work in that had the pulley system on the ceiling. He then asked me if I wanted a tour of the place and his machine shop, of course I did I love this kind of stuff. I wanted some left and right single toe presser feet that were smooth on the bottom, he was actually out of stock so he took some double toe ones and made me some while I was there. I was also interested in a binding attachment so he went over different setups with me for binding attachments. I could go on and on about my whole day there but don't want to bore everyone with the details. Thanks to this forum I found a place I can get great customer service at, I am sure the banner companies provide the same since there always here to help anyone. I am just happy Keystone Sewing is in my own backyard, my next purchase I will be buying a bell skiver from Keystone Sewing and a cylinder machine. Thank you again @Gregg From Keystone Sewing for all your help next Philadelphia Eagles Parade I owe you a beer, hopefully next year. I also practiced sewing with 92 thread and 138 and had no problems at all, was a little nervous on my own but nothing time won't fix.
  7. Hello all. I am looking for an older, affordable, walking foot machine capable of doing wallets, bags, belts, and the like. Something along the lines of a consew RB-1; pfaff 145; pfaff 545. I'm located in the Chicagoland area but doing mind traveling a bit to pick something up. Please let me know if you have, or come across, anything that you think might work for me. Thank you.
  8. I came across this and found it amusing had to post it. I wouldn't ever even think about putting a 1/2 of MDF under a industrial sewing machine or metal. Could be very dangerous. Enjoy the video.
  9. Does anyone have any info on the Juki ls-341n I have found a ton of info on the non-n version. Like what size thread and max material, and if anyone can ballpark what they go for in used condition. Thanks for any help
  10. After months of reading hundreds of forum topics and opinion articles, I'm finally breaking down and just asking outright. I'm looking for the "perfect" machine to be able to handle the types of handbags I make. At the moment, I do most of my construction with rivets and a non-walking foot Juki (terrible, I know) to skirt around forking out so much money for a proper machine, but the time has come. About my bags: I work primarily with 3-4 and 5-6 oz chrome and veg tanned leather. My current bag designs are simple and primarily rivet based (photos below), but I'm expanding to a line of bucket bags and backpacks that my poor tired flatbed has simply refused to sew. I would have to make drastic adjustments to the pattern that will chop up my minimalist design. A few months ago, I sold my cylinder arm Juki LS-321 (needle fed) because, aside from the needle feed mechanism not liking my seam overlaps, for the life of me - I could not get the thing to stitch straight unless I stitched as slowly as possible and held the leather tight from both the front and back. I have 6 years of rather intensive sewing experience on a flatbed, and tried to work with the LS-321 beast for a year so I don't think it was a learning curve issue, but I might be wrong. Now, my question is this: Is it possible to stitch handbags with a flatbed, or is it best to get a cylinder arm and a good flatbed platform for it? Further, what make and model do you recommend that is between $1-2k (preferably on the lower end) and has a good resource base of attachments that make production easier? I know this question has been asked a thousand times, but all of the topics I've read have had some caveat or compared craigslist ads they had found.
  11. I have an amazing Juki LU-563 walking foot sewing machine for sale. Heavy and solid cast body, made in Japan. The entire machine was overhauled by Sloan Machinery in New Hampshire about 3 years ago. They replaced the internal parts that had any signs of minor wear, installed a Sew Green Servo Motor, and changed the drive belt. They also mounted it on a good sized, very sturdy table. Mounted beside the machine is an automatic bobbin winder that runs while you sew (it’ll fill a full bobbin before you’ve used half of the one in the machine). You can also wind bobbins when you’re not sewing. The machine has been meticulously maintained and is in excellent condition. It’s always been used and stored in the climate controlled portion of the house. Every time I use it I oil all oil points with the included sewing machine oil (all oil points are marked so you’ll never forget). The Juki LU-563 is a workhorse of a machine. I used it to make leather bags and accessories, sewing up to 3 layers of 4oz leather with ease. I bought it for $1500 and am including a bit over $100 worth of thread, needles and spare bobbins. They run for about $1500 on eBay in similar condition so I’m asking for $1300 cash. I won’t ship, but I’ll gladly meet you around the Hartford, CT area. 13. For sale: One Juki LU-1560n double needle, compound feed walking foot machine with table and 600w servo motor. I recently obtained this in a factory sale but I am quickly realizing I don't have the space for a dedicated two-needle machine. This machine is in excellent clean condition, (doesn't seem like it was in service very long) with only the basic signs of use (some typical scratches here and there on the machine bed, belt guard, etc). I've tested it with 69, 92 and 138 bonded nylon and it sews great and climbs over most anything that will squeeze under the foot. 16 layers of ballistic nylon and it didn't flinch. Only issue with the machine I noticed - the thread tensioner disc for winding the bobbins is missing. I imagine they used pre-wounds in the factory and this was a non-issue. I've ordered a new assembly (genuine Juki part) Specs: http://www.juki.co.jp/industrial_e/download_e/catalog_e/lu1500n.pdf 2- needle, currently 1/4" gauge 0-9mm stitch length 16mm foot lift 135x17/16 needle system up to #24 6.5mm climb Rectangular feed locus Big "U" size bobbins Built-in bobbin winder Auto lubrication with filtration (flows great!) Safety clutch Will come with: Table in "decent" condition. The table seems older than the machine. Has all the expected production environment scratches, etc. There was a electric foot lifter solenoid attached, but no switch or power plug for it available on the basic motor, but I'll include it anyway. 600w basic brush-less servo motor with 50mm pulley Brand new belt Brand new oil filter pad Brand new bottle 700ml Juki Defrix #2 Brand new 4-spool thread stand Brand new magnet LED light Brand new waste oil bottle Spare waste oil bottle Pack of brand new misc needles #16 - #24 Basically add thread and materials and sew. Asking $2000. Would prefer pickup or I can arrange drop off somewhere near the SF bay area. Shipping via LTL freight possible too - I can strap it to a pallet, buyer to pay for freight and extra for lift gate as required.
  14. Hello all, First post here. This seems to be a good place to get questions answered and offer info when I can. I sew heavy duty nylon bags with some leather trims. Products are still in the "R&D" phase as I try to make what I see in my head end up as a thing...ha! I sew mostly with a Sailrite Fabricator machine with the Workhorse servo. Nice setup. It's quiet and pretty smooth and handles light leather duties. What I have on hand, suddenly: (I need to lay off Craig's List) I just recently obtained a couple Singers for a steal - a 111w155 and a 111w153. These are a clean up project and I'll probably sell em. I just also obtained a Juki 1560n for a really good price in a package deal from a factory sale. I'll have many questions about this one but I wanted a double needle but most of the time I might run it single. (more on that later) It's in great shape. The package deal with the 1560n also included a Juki AMS-210c. I have NO IDEA what to do with this machine. It's 3-phase, big, heavy and it has a damn floppy drive. It's in decent shape, nothing missing aside from the shuttle hook. (common part) Anyone here familiar with pattern tackers? I might try to convert it to a single phase servo machine (if that's even possible?) and get it to do bar tacks and boxes maybe. Or I'll sell it?

  16. Can anyone tell me what Juki sewing machine is comparable to a Pfaff 145?
  17. Hello everyone. I've been creeping on this site for a long time, and have learned a ton from it. I'm always impressed by the amount of responses on any given topic. Anyway, I decided to finally take the plunge and ask a question: I have been learning on a Sailrite LS-1 for the past couple of years. It was fine for my usage; mainly sewing canvas bags with hand-stitched leather details. A few days ago I was able to get my hands on a Juki LU-1508. I have been able to find lots of info on the LU-1508N, but not on the LU-1508 (which I assume is a older model?) The main difference I can see from pictures is the thread tension assembly. Does anyone have any info on this machine, or the differences between the two? Looking forward to hearing your responses and then posting a million more noob questions
  18. I would appreciate some advice here. I have a Juki DNU-241 walking foot machine. I have been using it for about 3 years to sew mainly bags, briefcases and other medium weight leather goods. I use 138 and 207 bonded nylon or polyester thread with it. The problem I have is this machine is so unpredictable for me. I have had very few occassions to use it when I didn't have to stop what I was doing to problem solve. The tension has been difficult to perfect for me. I am not a novice and feel as though it shouldn't be this hard. Some of the issues I have had with it are: it regularly shreds and breaks my thread, will sometimes bunch up or skip stitches, if I tighten the tension ALOT it will sometimes sew a little better but is nearly impossible to remove from the machine then. I have adjusted the timing at least a dozen times. The reverse is also unpredictable and you can feel a "jump" when the machine reverses and those stitches usually look crappy. A couple months ago I decided to put all machine stitched projects aside (they were being mangled anyway) and focus on getting this thing in a much more workable condition. I ordered parts and replaced the tensioner dials on the front. This did not help much so I replaced the entire hook assembly with very little gained from that. After adjustments in every other area I could find as a potential source of problem, I finally decided to call a professsional. Lol! I had a repair man who specializes in commercial machines come from 2 hours away to fix it. He spent several hours at my house working on it but never got it to sew the way he wanted it. He was perplexed (but that actually made me feel a little validated, lol). He took the machine with him to continue working on it. He contacted me about two weeks later and reports that he has been able to get my machine running forward and backward but with 138 size thread only not 207. I guess I'm ok with that, but it should be able to handle 207 is my understanding. Now, here is where I need advice as well....... I am going to pick up the machine next week. I am a little hesitant and, frankly, fed up with this machine. I know the Juki is a good machine but I pretty much want to throw it out the window most days. He tells me that he has a Consew 206rb5 (or maybe 4, he said the plate is missing) that we could possibly do a trade on. I will probably need to do something different with my table but I'm sure my servo motor will work the same with the consew (right?). He says the consew machine is running well and from what I can find it seems comparible to my Juki in as far as it will handle the same weight/thickness of leather. Is this machine less persnickity? More like to actually just sew something when asked? If in my shoes would others consider this to be a wise move? Thank you so much for your time and advice!!! Patty
  19. Good evening folks I'm a fiend and added a machine to the stable. I came up on a used Juki 5550 and will primarily use that as my garment machine. Ive been using a yamata 8700 (basically a juki 8700 clone) for my garment sewing. I was wondering what I would need to sew lightweight garment leather/lightweight leather. No more than 2 pieces of chrome tanned or other lighter types of leather of the 2/3oz variety. I know it wouldnt have the umph to sew through Veg tan. I have a cobra class 4 and Consew 1206rb to sew the thicker stuff. I just thought I could dedicate this to sewing watch rolls, wallet interiors, small bags and pouches. Mainly I wanted to dedicate it to light leather. All I really want to be able to do is sew with a #18 leatherpoint needle with bonded nylon #69 thread. Already has a servo so I can sew slow when I need to. So far heres the buy list. - Already ordered leather point needles #18, waiting for it to arrive - roller foot set w/ feed dog and plate - silcone spray ? saw a youtube video from atlas levy with this but im unsure if I should buy some or not. Anything I am missng ? Has anyone been successful with this type of setup. I read some threads where people with a 31-15 set theirs up like this. Any advice of comments are appreciated.
  20. Hey to all! Thanks for accepting here I would like to ask about the servo motor. I have JUKI 1811 with clutch motor, which is super fast - it is hard for me to work with leather, speacially for me as I am beginner. Could You tell me what kind of servo motor would fit my JUKI DU-1811N and also be the slow one? I have googled and searched this forum, I havent found that specific answer, but I guess I know that I need the small one - as it has advantage with slow type leather work? Any additional suggestions maybe. Thanks again, Niklas, CLIQ.
  21. Hi all! Im looking for a cylinder bed sewing machine in good or new condition. Even better if it has a flat bed attachment. Need it for light to medium work so I was thinking Techsew 2700 or 2800 but I'm open to other models as well. I'll be working mostly with lambskin but also some light to medium veg cowhide as well. I live near Philadelphia Thanks in advance!!!

Columbus, Louisville, Indianapolis, Dayton, Lexington etc. Thanks, Andy
  23. Apologies if there is already a topic that consolidates the information about sewing machine manuals (user manuals, user guides, repair guides, engineer guides, etc.) I just purchased a Juki LU-1508N and had a hard time finding an online user manual. Here are what I turned up. I hope the information is helpful to others. Joe ______________________________ * Manual at the Juki website: http://www.juki.co.jp/industrial_e/products_e/alldocument.html * The LU-1508N manual:from the Juki site: http://www.juki.co.jp/industrial_e/download_e/catalog_e/lu1500n.pdf * A site with an "engineer's" version of the Juki LU-1508N manual (for certain other Juki models as well): http://semsi.com.mx/Manuales/JUKI/LU-1500N SEM02_.pdf * A (sewitworks) web page that provides links to the manuals for machines made by various manufacturers (including Juki): http://www.sewitworks.com/manuals/
  24. Hello friends, I've got a problem that's been plaguing me for the last few weeks, whatever I tried, did not work. Well, a picture is worth a thousand words.. The attached picture is the bottom of 2 layers of nubuck glued together. While the top stitching (not shown) is good, at the bottom (the picture); some steps are good, some are bad, some are almost perfect and some are completely unacceptable. The whole thing was done on a single run with no variation in speed. This is what a few months old Juki LU-1508N gives me... My other machine; LS-1341 sews the same material absolutely FLAWLESS - same needle, same thread, same operator, etc... I'm very frustrated. All help is appreciated and I thank you in advance.
  25. Hi there. This is my first post. I have read a lot here on leather sewing machines here and I wish to ask about my situation specifically. I was aiming to get one for my birthday in July but 6 months off work with cancer treatment (going well nearly finished I hope) has delayed that idea for quite a while now, but, I thought I would pick your brains anyway and get my head around what I am looking at. I DONT want any fighting between cowboy/cobra/silrite/consew/juki supporters as I have a lot of respect for the sellers of all those machines who have given lots of info and free time to help others. I have hand sewn some light bags and put my poor little Janome Mystyle 18W through hell with a little clutch bag. (I like what Arthur Porter does in Dallas)I cannot hand sew for long as I have a damaged nerve in my arm from dialysis (yeah if I was a sewing machine i would be on the scrap heap by now!). I would also like to incorporate leather in my teddy bear making. I want to use at several layers of least 5-7 oz tooling Veg- tan leather in some products as well as other lighter leather at this point. (I would include pics of my stuff but the pc is not cooperating) I only have a small area (90cmL x 60cm W) so large machines are out of the question. I have looked online at (in no particular order) at the Sairite zig zag/consew CP2064/Cowboy (3200/3500/4500)/Cobra 3/4s/4P machines and have heard of Juki 441 machines as well. Can I also get the size of the tables/pedestals as they will have to be factored in to my little niche. I am in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. I have heard of Cowboy and Cobra being in Queensland but not down south (must be too cold down here for them :^} ) So if there is any distributors down this way to deliver and help set it up, it would be really good. There are other places in Melbourne but they only seem to carry big machines. Ideally about $800 - $1000 for the smaller Consew/sailrite machines would be good but I don't know if they will suite. I would use that as a springboard to go from there to a larger one like the Cowboy/cobra or save up to get the larger machine cowboy/cobra at a later date. Oh and whoever gets my sale (eventually) I am dyslexic so I will ask a HEAP of questions. For that reason I would prefer new, although I saw a really cute Juki LU-562 with Dayton gear motor on a forum here earlier and thought it looked fantastic!!!!! Thanks in advance. Boofy
