  1. Hello all, I've got this lovely all original Singer 45K56 Cylinder Arm machine that I bought a few months back to do my knife sheaths with. I did this in anticipation of my sewing arm getting worse, but since I had a hydro cortisone injection, it got a lot better. Moreover, I don't make that many Sheaths anyway as I've cut back a bit. Considering how much time, effort and money I wasted chasing down a suitable proper leather sewing machine, I felt that I ought to let folk on here know about it before I put it on eBay etc. I'm not a dealer so you won't get any BS from me. Check me out from my website http://www.customknivesandsticks.co.uk/ and you'll then know who you're dealing with. Well, if one was to see where I've got the machine set up you'd wonder how come my good lady hasn't left home! It's taking far too much space and I'd like my kitchen table back in its place. So if anybody in the UK is interested, get in touch with me on paulfenech@talktalk.net and we'll do a fair deal. I got this machine from a fine and proper trustworthy gentleman called Michael Hill, who's work is just superb. I haven't even got around to practising with the machine, but I guarantee it that all is fine with it and it'll work a treat. I live just north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. By the way, I fetched this machine in my Subaru estate car, so no larger vehicle is needed really. I won't post any photos on here as I can easily send them via e-mail. OK, that's it from me. Just so you know; I'm allergic to time wasting greedy idiots who think they can get something for silly money. Treat me with respect and deal fairly with me - that's all I ask. Best wishes to all - Paul (aka Frenchy)
  2. Hello Leatherworkers! First post. Long time reader. I have recently decided to take a leap into the world of sewing machines to tackle some bigger projects that would be too difficult to handle with hand stitching. I have an opportunity to purchase either a Singer 78-1 or Singer 96k40 which are both available and in my budget (sadly the singer 111w was neither). The thickest leather I will be sewing will be 2x5oz leather or possibly 2x6oz whereas the smallest would be two layers of 2oz. I believe both of these machines will handle this although the high end might be pushing it. The 78-1 has a walking foot and can handle 138 thread, which is ideal. However, the 96k40 is fully serviced and ready to go in amazing condition. Also, 'The Wiz' on this forum has spoken fairly highly of the 96k40 as it was his first industrial machine I believe. Any and all insights and opinions to help guide my choice is greatly appreciated. Excited, Alexander Thank you for the years of learning!

  4. I recently purchased a Singer 31-15. It came with two sets of needles. The first set of needles were marked "Singer" on the shaft, and from the eye size, look to be either #16 or #18. These have no scarfs on the needles. The second set of needles were still in the package and are marked Organ needles 16x257/LR (110/18). These have a scarf on each needle. Both sets of needles look nearly the same; they are both the same diameter and length (except for the scarf on the second set). I was using #69 thread with the Singer needles to set up the machine, and got everything working fine. It sews correctly on either cloth or leather. Without making any other changes, I then tried to use the Organ 16x257/LR leather needles in the machine. These did not work. They will not catch the bobbin thread. In both situations, the groove on the needle was to the left, and threaded from left to right. However, when I reversed the Organ needle (groove on the right, still threaded left to right), it would sew maybe a dozen stitches before breaking the top thread. Anyone have any ideas how to the leather needles with a scarf to work?
  5. I picked this sewing machine up at an auction and it has potential to have history with my family, the gentleman that brought it in dug it out of the attic of his parents old general store, which was next door to my grandparents on my fathers side, who ran a shoe repair shop. I haven't been able to confirm that it belonged to them but it's interesting none the less.
  6. Hello. Im new to Leatherworker.net and somewhat new to the sewing leather trade. Im posting here because I just picked up what I hope to be my next leather sewing machine (which was a "barn find"). The brass plate with the model # is gone. The problem is, without properly identifying it, Im afraid I will not be able to order proper parts such as needle, bobbin, belt, manual..... Ive been doing quite of a bit of internet searching and phone calls and this is what I've been able to find: Its a Singer. Class 31. Built beginning 09/1916. It's an industrial sewer. It has a walking foot. But that's about it. What I was hoping to find out, from the good and knowledgable people here, is: Which model 31? 31-15, 31-17, 31-18.... Belt size? What needle size does it take or more importantly what needle size can I use on this machine for sewing hair-on-hide leather? What size thread and bobbin type work best for this machine? I know that once I find out exactly which model 31 it is, I can find the manual for it and the answers to these questions. Ideally, I'd like to use this machine for sewing leather / hair-on-hide handbags, clutches and small accessories. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  7. A local gentleman is selling a Singer 211G151 with table and "The Works". He is asking $300 for it, and it is in good working order and a trusted individual. I have a Tippmann Boss for my leather holster and heavy leather needs, but am thinking about getting into garment leather goods like small bags, pouches, etc .... Will this machine work good for garment leather and even lightweight canvas?
  8. I just committed to buy an old Singer 111w105. I don't know much about them other than they're old, and they weigh about as much as a refrigerator. Has anyone had one? The foot looks like this in its current state. Any intel would be appreciated. This is a little side project I may live to regret!
  9. Good morning! I am a beginning leatherworker and purchased a Singer 15 sewing machine a few months ago and it had been doing a fantastic job stitching leather of all thicknesses, single and double ply, up to 15 oz and as thin as 2 oz. Recently I have been having immense difficulty with two things on it. 1. The thread spacing is erratic sometimes even on leather that is exactly the same thickness the whole way, it may stem from the second problem I am having though. I have checked the thread spacing screw and it is tight and has not moved from the position it has always been in (~6-8 stitches per inch). Is this due to having too large of a needle? 2. The presser foot periodically will lift up with my leather when the needle is coming back up through the leather to go to the next stitch and will also miss locking the stitch. I have backed out and adjusted the tension on the presser foot all the way down as far as it can go. Previously this would be so tight that the leather would not even move when you tried to advance a stitch. Now it is so loose that the needle can easily pick up the leather when it is coming back through. I am mainly making headstalls, breastcollars, halters and spur straps, using 13-15oz leather, what type of thread and size needle should I be using? Does anyone have any experience with these machines? I would like to see if I can figure out what is going on with it before I take it in to a shop we have here in town that *might* be able to fix it. I would love to purchase a more professional machine, but money is tight right now and I am already farther than I would rather be in the hole with starting my leather business up. However if anyone has a used machine that works well still that they are looking to sell please let me know! Thank you sooo much for any help that you can give! Christina

  11. I love my Singer 45k25, but at time it is just too much, as it struggled with light stuff. As I decided to make a couple of leather garments and needed something a little lighter, able to sew 1.2mm leather and textiles. I found a Juki DDl-555 for $100 and 1/2 a tank of gas to pick it up. At the saem time I found a Consew 206RB but for $1500 versus $100, hmmmm let me think. The Juki has not even been run in, no paint wear and al I needed were some bobbins and I decided to give it an oil change just in case. Yes, it is textile machine and yes it runs like a belt fed, but is very controllable at slow speed, though I have 45mm pulley on order to replace the 105mm currently installed. But man it makes a nice stitch, every stitch forever. very nice. In light garment leather the photos speak for themselves. And this is with standard 100 size textile sharps, as my leather needles are int he post. The point is, that while NOT a leather machine, it is a bargain professional textile machine that has a lot of offer the light weight leather engineer. Besides, $100 for the beautifully engineered unused machine could not be passed by. Tony
  12. Hello everyone; After nearly forty years of sewing everything by hand, my old hands need a machine. Perhaps it's just an excuse and maybe I'm getting lazy but I still want one anyway. I have an opportunity to pick up a used Singer Sewing Machine Model 211G166 and was wondering if it will be suitable for sewing two pieces of 8 to 9 ounce tooling leather. Thank you for any help. Matchlock.
  13. Hi there, So I'm new to the forum and i was just wanting to post some questions about a machine I'm looking at purchasing, and don't want to make a purchase ill regret. The Singer 201 Treadle machine is the one I've had my eye on, I'm from New Zealand so its not to often you come across a nice one, but i seem to have found one, just wanting to know from some more experienced leather workers if this machine would be suitable for leather sewing, nothing to heavy duty but just wallets and accessories with 4-5oz natural vegetable tanned leather. Thanks a lot, Not sure if this link will work but you might be able to find the machine here. http://www.trademe.c...px?id=633169999

  15. I have what is probably a newb question, but I've read thru alot of the forum before asking it, because it isn't specifically addressed. My question is: "Would it be possible to use a foot operated or crank handle antique Singer for sewing leather?" I know I've seen questions out there about using a home machine vs industrial machune, but none of them mentioned the foot pedal manually operated machines. Since it is brought up so much about the machines being set up with too fast of a speed, I was wondering how one of those would work. I have my eye on a a 99 Singer and a 128 Singer. I bring this up because I spent some time at a plant that made real braided rugs, and after getting a quote for the $3000 per machine for commercial quality, they went around and collected some of these old girls and set them up. Absolutelyl NO sewing machine would go thru that stuff, but those did. Sincerely, Twitterpate
  16. I just got an old, treadle powered SInger 15-36. It looks like it will do a good job on projects too small for my Cobra Class 4. But, I'd like to add a motor to it and eliminate the treadle. Has anyone done it? What do you recommend for motor? Are there conversion kits?
  17. Hello everyone; I was hoping you could help me with some information about a Singer, Model: 168G 101. I have a golden opportunity to obtain one today and was wondering if it would be satisfactory for sewing heavy tooling leather. For example, would it stitch two or three pieces of 8 to 10 oz. veg. tanned leather together? I thought that with the post, and nice wide throat, that it would be ideal for a lot of different projects, but don't know about the capacity of it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this machine.Bud.

  21. Hello all I am new here, been reading the forum trying to solve my problem.... I recently purchased a 211G155 to sew purses and leather with. I am not new to sewing but this machine has me baffled. I too have this thread tension issue resulting in a rat's nest on the bottom of the material... I have checked and double checked my threading, there is a killer video on youtube about how to tread thru the tension disks. So I am pretty sure I have that correct. Wizcrafts wrote " A thread rat's nest under the material is usually caused by a total lack of top tension. However, the bobbin thread is usually picked up in those situations; it's just tighter on the bottom than the top my a magnitude." And this goes along with sewing machine common sense. What I cannot figure out is HOW or HOW TIGHT the tension should be.. There are no markings or adjustment indicators on the tension disks. It seems that there is quite a bit of tension on the thread, it is hard to pull so I know it is not an issue of no tension at all. The machine seemed to work perfectly when I bought it. It was set up and sewed a sample of my material just fine. All I have done is brought it home and wound new thread on a bobbin and threaded it with new #92 nylon thread and have a singer 130 needle properly installed. So I guess my question(s) would be, how tight is enough tension? How hard should it be to pull the thread thru the tension disks/spring? Do I just keep cranking the knurled nut down? Or does anyone have another opinion of what I am doing wrong? Thanks a bunch. Mia
  22. Hi everyone, This is my first time posting here, I've been hiding in the weeds reading, reading and reading some more. there is so much knowledge out there. I was searching through the forums today and found where someone had posted a link to a manual for a Singer 96k10. The link took me straight to the site, but do you think I can find it now? if anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it! Cheers from Calgary
  23. I am looking for a working Singer 45k Cylinder arm machine. Would prefer it to be in the Pacific Northwest. Please post pictures and price.
  24. Hi All! So I'm relatively new to my Singer 211G165 and honestly purchased it with only a little research on what I needed (walking foot) , but luckily so far it's been "OK" for me. I use it to sew chromium leather handbags. (sometimes up to 3 or 4 layers thick) Sometimes it works well, other times it does not, and I'd love everyones feedback on the best needles, thread, etc to use. Lately I've been having problems with stitches skipping, bobbin thread breaking, or getting tangled in the bobbin case. While trying to investigate, it appears that the little square tab that sticks off of the side of the bobbin case is not where it should be? I am wondering if that little tab is supposed to be underneath the needle plate? It looks like it was at one point because the needle plate is worn down... I will post a picture this evening! Also my hand wheel is very hard to turn... is that normal? In some videos i've seen, it looks very easy to them.. I also just realized that the "Swing away guide" thing exists and I am SUPER excited to get one of those! I have tons of questions, but that will work for now. I really appreciate everyones responses! best, erin
  25. Want to buy heavy duty Singer leather sewing machines. Cosmetics not important...I want a workhouse where I can tinker and learn. Intent is to make leather straps, no intricate designs or tooling, just stiching. Thanks!
