  1. Hi again all! hopefully this is an okay place to ask this, as I’ve exhausted all other options now! Is there anyone out there that has experience making twisted mecate reins? I’ve been braiding them for a few years and would love to learn how to twist them by hand. any and all information/advice welcome!! thanks again !
  2. Good morning, ive been trying to wrap my head around the maths for figuring out my string size for a braided bosal core. I’m used to working in mm rather than inches and fractions, so it’s taking more brain power than expected! im wondering if it’s as simple as taking the core size I want to achieve, and dividing that by the number of strings I want to use to find out what size strings I should use. this is what I usually do for kangaroo lacing, but this is my first time messing with rawhide so not too sure if it’s a different story. thanks again !
  3. How do I secure the loop ends of the braided romel reins under the large cowboy knot? Im using a leather core. These reins will be used so I need them to hold up to a horses resistance if needed. Thanks in advance.
  4. Most of what I learned about leather, lace making, and braiding (plaiting); I learned from the master - Bernie Wojcicki. Although I didn't know him personally, I watched every video on his Youtube channel and referred to them often. Bernie used MS Word to create his whip patterns and it works OK, but I wanted more automation and flexibility. I have since found an online site called Faceplait that is super easy to use, and allows you to experiment with different patterns and see how it looks before you start plaiting. It also gives you row by row OU steps to follow. This really helps keep your place when you stop and start. I didn't see this mentioned in the forums here, but if this is old news, I hope I haven't wasted your time. The program is very easy to use. Perhaps you'll find it helpful: http://www.whipinfo.com/
  5. Hi all, figured I’d try braiding a Turks Head knot onto a rock just for fun and to try something new. Kangaroo lace in natural and burgundy, and the knot is a two-pass seven part six bight Turks ahead knot, using the instructions from a Ron Edwards leatherwork book. now I need to figure out what to do with the rock
  6. I am going to be making a braided belt for my daughter. I am thinking of making this flat 6-strand braid. I have the Encyclopedia of Braiding by Bruce Grant but I cannot find anything that really addresses the length of the strands in order to come out to a proper length. Can anyone provide some guidance or rule of thumb formulas for determine the length of the strands? Thanks in advance
  7. Hello all! Here is a leather tote bag I finished a while ago. The handles are an 8 strand round braid and the first thing I've braided. The leather is 8oz veg-tan with soft pigskin lining on the inside. The sheridan pattern is my own work. This is also my first time using a bar grounder in my carving. Let me know what you think! Critique welcome. -Ryan
  8. First time posting here! Be gentle! I've been doing some leatherwork on and off for a few years. I'm pretty much self taught so there are some large gaps in my knowledge. I started in the theatrical costuming world, so I know how to sew or hand sew pretty much anything, and I can figure out any pattern I want to make. What I'm lacking is proper knowledge of leather prep. The project I'm working on now is recreating a braided leather hackamore for my father. The original was my great grandfathers and the last flood here in Bastrop got it. I know how to do the braid, it's a 8 string square braid over a core, that's the easy part. What I would like to know is threefold.... 1. I have the Tandy table top lace cutter, which I like fine. BUT what happens when you don't have long enough strings to create the whole braid? Is there a way to join ends when you know you're about to hit the end? I know I can hide a join under the other stands during the braid, but I'm not sure how to accomplish the join in the first place... skive the two ends and glue? Add a few stitches? 2. Do you bevel the edges of each of your strings in order to make everything look cleaner and neater? If so, what do you use? I have a french beveler, but it doesn't seem to be the best tool for the job... 3. The leather I think I'm using is the Acadia Old Town Folklore. It's about 5-5.5 oz. Is that going to be too think? I could have ordered it and had them dry split it, but I didn't think of it at the time. Should I invest in a manual splitter? I've seen them for $200 and over, but I can barely afford the $200 version... Any and all suggestions are SO VERY WELCOME! Thank you all, CA
  9. I made this bag for my mom. (60th birthday) Didn't give yet Leather : Buttero Vegetable Tanned Leather (Italy) Thickness : 1.8t (3oz) The video features making a braided brown shopper bag. I hope you guys like it too. Thanks! Video [12:18]
  10. Does anyone know of good detailed dvd's on plaiting for whips and round braids with knots? I was hoping to find copies of Bernies dvd's (em brand whips) is there are any still in circulation? I already own marlinespike knot works dvds, looking for more in plaiting specifically.
  11. I am creating a leather paper tray. I stamped the inner sides and bottom with a basket weave and hand stitched the sides together. I’m now lacing the top edge with a round braid but can’t seem to get the corner right. I know how to do a corner on a flat piece of leather but since the tray does not have a corner hole I can’t figure out how to lace the corner. Help!
  12. Hi There, im rather new to rawhide braiding and looking to buy a string cutter/beveler. But am not having a lot of luck finding one in New Zealand / Australia, would any one be able to point me in the right direction for this? Thanks in advance
  13. I'm new to braiding and want to know what leather to use and where to buy it. NelsonG
  14. I just made a small braided headphones holder as a gift. Figured I’d post more detailed pics of the process here, as knots can sometimes be hard to follow (for me at least) just from diagrams in a book. The piece starts as a simple flat three plait, which is then folded in half and tied off with scrap thread to form the loop at one end. Two strands are then thinned down to make the core for a round four braid. The start of the round braid doesn’t have to be super neat, as it’ll be covered later by a knot. I then braid for about 6 inches (can be longer but wouldn’t recommend any shorter), then tie off with scrap thread (will also be covered by a knot). I then roll the braid under a bread board to stretch it out and smooth down the texture.
  15. Small Christmas gift; braided headphones holder. Starts with a simple three plait, then folded in half, using two strands as a core for the round four-braid, finished with a gaucho knot button. Will post a more detailed process overview of the knot in the ‘how to’ section. I forgot how fiddly braiding and knot tying is lol
  16. Looking to find out how to braid a dog show lead for my dog. Can anyone send me in the right direction please? Thank you
  17. Getting back into braiding and leatherwork after a long time away from it. Made a leash for my brother and his red heeler (quality tested by my Dobie). Kangaroo leather six-strand round plait, over a paracord core, loops back-spliced in, and the clip end loop braided over again to give a replaceable wear area.
  18. I thought my copy of Bruce Grant's Encyclopedia of Rawhide & Leather Braiding wasn't leather braidy enough, so I made a jacket. It's starting to look more appropriate now.
  19. Leather Brothers and Sisters, I'm struggling with the Five Thong Circular Applique from Bruce Grant's book. I can follow the first half of the directions but then... Blah! Anyone know of a simpler method or step by step instructions for making this beautiful braid? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! All the best, Brett C.
  20. Hello all, was wondering if anyone could give me a hand in learning the herringbone braid, ive seen this pattern in other members work and think i looks pretty nice for a bracelet, im interested in making it primarily in 6 and 8 strands, im not even sure if it can be done in 4 strands but i may be wrong, If you know a you tube video or any other resource that can point me in the right direction id appreciate it. Thank You D.A.
  21. This past weekend I made some raw hide using KAWs method for dehairing(it worked pretty good by the way) thanks for that KAW, any way I am now ready to cut it into strings for several different projects, maybe royal reins, bosal, and buttons and I am curious of others opinion on how to cut the hide. It seems like if I take my strap cutter and cut around the hide I would have very little waste, vs cutting out rounds then cutting string. I have even seen where some just cut the hide in straps length ways. Are certain parts better for certain items, I know when making a saddle, saddle makers like certain parts of the hide for different pieces of the saddle. I'm pretty green to this but seems as if it would apply to braiding as well.
  22. A bull whip that I made for a customer recently.
  23. Im trying to figure out the math for widths of plaits. I have a 7/8" Diameter tube that I would like to braid. I would ideally like to have strand widths between a quarter and half inch. Is there a calculation that can be used to figure out my options?
  24. Hello, I am looking to buy a splitter for latigo whip plaiting and general splitting with low production volume (3-5 whips per week). What spliter does everyone recommend? I have been thinking a landis 5 in 1 or similar would work well for my shop but is it accurate enough? I see the most plaiters use the C.S. Osborn manual type, why is this? Thanks, Travis
  25. I have been searching for any braiding classes in or around North Carolina and unfortunately an internet search has not been of much help. Tandy in Chicago, a site in Texas and a few even futher have offerings, but the wife prefers that I try and stay a little closer to home. Being a hands-on learner, I wanted to see if anyone knows of anyone that offers any hands-on classes to get me going on the right foot. Thanks for any help.
