Hi, Have a question about a type of stitch and also its strength. The stitch I want to know about is in this video below. It is the first stitch he does, single needle method. My questions: -1. What is the name of the stitch. He says it gives the look of the 2 needle saddle stitch method. Is it still called a saddle stitch? -2. Also is this stitch strong and if one stitch breaks, say in the middle, will they all pull through? 3-. Is there a different way to start and finish this type of stitch? I cant end it like he does with putting it between the two pieces. I just cant keep it tight to do it. So what I have been doing is when I get to the end on the second pass that takes me to where I started to end the stitch, I then just go a few more holes the opposite way(so 3 times through each hole) just a few holes, cutting it and adding a dab of glue. Appreciate any help and thank you Hand sew leather video

Is it possible to sew mil-spec nylon webbing to 10-12oz english bridle leather by hand? If so how do I go about it and what needles and thread would be best? I'm also looking into sewing machines, is a Cobra 4 too much for what I'm trying to do?

I have a fairly new hand crank, 6" blade Cowboy Leather Splitter. This leather splitter is in fantastic working and physical condition. The blade is very sharp, it is oiled up and ready to split. It was an impulse buy on my part. I haven't used it much as I thought I would, since I bought it. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about it. I'm willing to sell it for $1100 (not including shipping) I paid $1395 +tax for it. If you live in the Dallas, Texas area you are more than welcome to come check it out or pick it up. I will be willing to ship, at the buyers expense. It's pretty heavy, and I'm not to sure how much shipping would cost, but if you are interested I could find out.

Hey all, Just wondering what size (mm) tiger thread is recommended for 8 spi. I read a post that suggested .8 mm for 8 spi. Just wondering if anyone else has tested this. I am currently using tandy's craftool pro 8 spi chisel. What would be the advantages/disadvantages of going smaller to say, .6 mm thread? Thanks! Zayne

Hi, I have a relatively simple leatherworking job that I'm looking to offer to someone either in/near Norfolk, Virginia, or Portland, Oregon (I live in VA, but the majority of my business is located in OR). I have a straightforward wallet design that I need someone to construct. I'm considering two methods of manufacture. 1) Having the leather laser-cut (including stitch holes) and then hand sewn. 2) Having the wallets die-cut and sewn by machine. Either way, the requirements will be relatively basic. If you live in or near Virginia or Oregon, and have an interest in this work, please let me know by personal message. Further, if you have contact information for someone or some business that may be interested in this work, please forward it to me. FYI, this job probably will not begin for the next few months, but I'm trying to get things in order now. Also, I'm currently at sea with the US Navy, so my response time may be delayed. Thanks!

I have a hand press with an assortment of dies for sale. This press is still being manufactured, so the dies are readily available. Minkus Margo sells over 50 types and sizes of dies that include dies for setting snaps, grommets, eyelets, punching holes in leather, setting rivets, setting spots aka nailheads, setting spikes, and setting lots of shapes of decorative rivets. Allstarco also sells dies that fit this press. The brass dies listed here are from Allstarco. They are used for setting rim sets for adding crystal rhinestones to your projects. They also work great for setting spots. This is a great press and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to add decorative elements to their projects. I am a full time professional leather worker. I bought the press and dies when I was starting out. I'm only selling it because I am investing in a larger multi feed foot press so I can work more efficiently. Here is a listing of what is included along with the retail value Hand Press - $114 7mm die for setting spots (approximately 1/4") - $34.99 6mm die for setting rhinestone chatons - $52.99 7mm die for setting rhinestone chatons - $52.99 8mm die for setting rhinestone chatons - $52.99 10mm die for setting rhinestone chatons - $52.99 6 mm die for setting rhinestone rivets - $39.99 Brass die for SS 20 rim set rhinestones - $38 Brass die for SS 30 and SS34 rim set rhinestones - $38 Unopened bag of 300 7mm spots - $10.50 I will send along the crystal chatons that are left for you to practice with. Hello all, I am looking for a good quality hand heat embosser. I emboss mostly vegetable tanned lamb nappa and camel leather. I need something with which I can emboss initials. I bought one from Hong Kong and it was flimsy and far too long. Anything US made or european made if there is such a thing would be ideal. Thank you in advance. L

So well, I guess there is no need for two threads, so I´ll reduce it to one I had a work mate some time ago I came along with really nice and who teached me a lot for my daily job. So as we are both craftsmen and therefore like well (hand)made stuff I decided to make him a belt which turned out to be the best I made yet. For those of you who mention the different colour of the edge all along and the edge where the keeper sits (might be hard to see on the pictures... didn´t do a nice job on the pciture stuff this time): I started with the buckle using edge kote. But after that I visited my father who owns one of my belts and recognized, that the edge of hos belt - which I finished with some edge kote, too - was just fuzzy all along.... so I cried a little for help here, got some fingers pointed again on the thread "how to finish edges" and did it (nearly) as descriebed there... finally I got a nice (even nicer!) edge the with edge kote which hopefully should hold up much longer, as the only substance sitting on top is a really thin coat of Tan Kote finished with some parraffin. Thanks for that already guys! Acutally I never saw him since I gave it to him, but he was full of joy, so I assume the hours put into this piece were worth it. The belt itself is some 3,5mm belt croupon lined with some 0,8mm ... neck (I guess... ordered that seperately), hand dyed as always and handstitched with 8 SPI all around. The bucke is made of solid brass and the width is just about 38mm. As this is the second lined belt I made, I tried out some things like skiving the loop where the buckle sits down to the lining plus tapering the tip of the belt for a better sliding into the belt keeper. work worked just fine. The second piece is a sheath for a... "fancy" knife of a customer. He just wanted a simple sheath but made a lot more sturdier than his last one where the knife is hold by friction at least a little as is came out sometime before... The sheath is dyed with a light brown. After that I applied one coat of oil, let it dry and applied some heavy coat of my leatherbalm. The plan was to fit the handle colour of the knife which turned out quite good. I guess those are the moments where it´s good to know how the individual hide darkens when you use your "stuff (the balm) on it!! So always do a sample guys.... really! I guess If I didn´t know and wanted to be it light brown I´d have stuck in this head->table->head->table motion.... XD So here you see the difference between the old one the ne sheath As the blade got a little curve near the tip, it even cut a little hole into the old sheat... that was made poor and a little tight, so everytime the customer pushed the knif back into the sheath he unwillingly forced the tip into the leather.... poor little thing ^^

Does anyone know where I can get a custom circle punch made? I would like one for cutting out circles in 8/9 oz leather for some coasters I'm making. I need a pretty specific size (4 1/8"), which is why I would probably need one custom made. I tried cutting one out by tracing a circle with a stencil I made, then cutting and sanding, but it took way too long to just do one coaster, let alone a whole set of coasters. I also don't want to spend a lot of money, so I am not opposed to tackling making one myself, I just wouldn't know where to start. I could use some kind of pipe, but I doubt Id be able to find something with that exact diameter. Thanks, Zayne

Hi, I occasionally do wet moulding for tool sheaths, bags etc. What I need are some tacks that do not stain the leather, the only ones I can get locally or online in the UK are just steel and rust immediately and stain the leather. Not an issue so far as I tend to use dark colours, but I want to try a bag in an undied colour ie pale beige. In Al Stohlman's books he mentions HAND or SHOE tacks but all the local cobblers say even they can[t get them. So....... HELP! Best Wishes Claire PS The quantity I need is about 50-100 or so if reuseable.

Today I was skiving some leather and regrettably ruining more than successfully making I became frustrated and tried to mod my hand skiver... This is the skiver I'm working with... I removed the bottom plate like you would to change out a blade. I realized that the plane that the blade bends on is to slight for my liking and causes me to cut through my edge often times when a thin skive is required. So to improve the curve/plane that the blade bends on I wedged a piece of card stock in-between the blade and the handle. I also put a wedge of card stock on each side of the screws to compensate for wedge in the center of the blade. This helped to create a more drastic curve which I find much easier to control and I don't seem to cut so uncontrolled. Another idea I have for hand skiving would be to get a thin sheet of metal clamp it to my table so that I can have a surface to but the leather up against but have a raised plane from the table, hopefully acting like a guide for skiving. Thought this might be helpful for anyone struggling with skiving... Anthony Loughan http://lousleather.weebly.com http://facebook.com/lousfineleather
