Hi all, my friend ordered a carved hat band for his cowboy hat, and has basically given me free rein on the design. I'll be making it 1/2" wide, and I would like to connect the ends similar to the way the Pedro Pedrini does, where the tongue slips through a small keeper, but without a buckle. Can anyone tell me how he might fasten the ends so it doesn't slip apart? Thank you, Morgan

Here is my very first hat. my first commissioned piece for a self declared pirate captain no less. It was a lot of fun to make. I fould the perfect oil tanned leather at SLC and the pattern is from dieselpunk.ro. It gave it just the right look. I have already been asked to make another, and so it begins.

I’m looking at making some leather patch hats but I’m not close enough to a leather store to put hands on leather and feel what I want. Anyone have suggestion as what to use? I will be engraving and cutting the leather on a laser machine and sewing them onto hats.

Hey all, New member here, but I'm running out of places I can search for help on either ideas or instruction. I have a hat band I'm wanting to make, and I haven't yet gotten all the supplies because I'm not sure what all I'll need for the project. My goal is to make a leather hat band with unobstructed bullets around the outside. I'm wanting to avoid the typical bullet loops look or stitching around the front of the bullet, as I feel it would obscure the bullet itself aesthetically. I'm going to be using pre-fired .357 Magnum brass bullets and leather for the hat band itself. I have a hat band currently on my hat, and the decorative pieces on it have a type of diamond-shaped rivet with prongs that punched through the band to be bent back to secure them on sort of like a staple. Simple stuff. The bullets I'm getting can have a hole drilled into them, and in my mind's eye I pictured something like some sort of brad or rivet securing inside the drilled hole of the bullet, so essentially the bullet would have prongs sticking out of it on one side that I can then use to secure it to a hat band cleanly. I hope that made sense. A friend suggested some sort of contact cement or glue or goop but I worry that a bullet's surface area onto leather would prove both too small and weak in lasting under duress of wear and tear, and would be messy and not clean in presentation if I were to go this route. tl;dr: I'm searching for help on if there's a way to give the bullet some sort of prongs that can be put through a leather hat band while looking slick and put together and not sloppy. Would there be a way to simply secure the rounded surface area of the bullet to a flat rivet itself which then can be secured to the hat band? Is it even possible to drill a hole into a bullet and have something inserted that would create prongs for the bullet itself? Are prongs even the best way to go about this? or would glue or goop or contact cement prove better? The leather hat band will be sitting snug against a high-quality leather cowboy hat so I also want it to be safe against the leather of my hat without scratching or something. I'm completely new at all of this so any and all ideas and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time!

I have acquired a mule skin surveyors hat from what I believe to be from the early 1900's. The problem is the customer would like this dried hat stretched into a soft wearable hat. How do I stretch the hat in a way that the hat won't be damaged?

Hey guys, my first post here, but I would like to say how much I am a fan of this website. I've only been working with leather for a few months but absolutely love it. Hopefully someone can help me with how to go about making a hat like this one. Any info/tips would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible to make it from one piece of suede? Or sewing two sections together? What is the best way to mould suede? Thanks in advance.

Just a hat in an altered medieval "pillbox"-design with some tooling added. made of about 2,5mm veg. Cowhide and some sturgeon . The top is made of wool. I kind of like it, even if the stitching line on the back is anything but perfect... gonna work on that ^^. I just hope you like it. (as normal - click to enlarge)

From the album: My Leather Art
This is a special wallet. This goat keeps bumping his head against the farmer until she take her hat off and put it on his head. He then turn around and walk away, very happy with himself -
Does anyone have a good pattern for making a leather tricorn hat? The tutorials I have found online rely on a rounded top with straight sides sewed on and witha brim added last. I was hoping for a more authentic-looking pattern with a completely rounded top (no stitched straight sides). Can anyone help or direct me to the right resource? I have 5oz. veg tanned tooling leather to work with and all necessary cutting, edging, stitching tools. Also, tips on how to finish the leather to make it a deep brown that would not stain the forehead would be appreciated. Thank you so much in advance and a Merry Christmas to all leather workers out there!

I'm looking for a pattern for a wide brimmed puritan style hat. I've tried Google but all I come up with are unsuitable kids papercraft instructions. Searching on this forum has also been fruitless. The brim won't be a problem, but I want to make sure I get the side band right. I'm assuming it will need a slight curve to give the correct tapered appearance. I'm looking to create something along the lines of this...

Hi all, I've just posted in regard to Brass Tacks, but I also had this on my mind. I need a pattern or at least ideas for making a bandana for myself. I need one that comes down over half the ear and low at the back, much like the sort of bandana someone on Chemo would wear. I currently use shop bought or friend made ones made in textiles but I'd like to have go in leather. So the little perched on top ones that a biker might wear is too small, needs to be as above and no gaps at the back where the adjustment would be. I could even adjust a 'Baker Boy' pattern but a 'baseball cap' would probably be too tight fitting. Best Wishes Claire
