This is new thread dedicated to tools of the trade related to shoe making and cobblers . It appears that we get a bit side tracked on some threads and the shoe making enthusiasts and myself "hijack" some threads and start talking about shoes, so this thread is dedicated to the subject. I am a shoemaker and cobbler and have a passion for vintage tools and how they were used . I am also a collector of these tools and try incorporate them in my work . I am also a former metal fabrication and industrial engineer so i have the skill and means to restore them to their former glory . In another thread about cowboy boots i offered to explain shoe makers lasting pliers…

I got into trying to make my own leather watch straps about 5 months ago after spending what I thought was a lot of money on straps, even though I had started buying straps from Tuns in Vietnam. They worked out to $35 to $50 USD for most of the leather types, with a 15% discount on two or more straps, and only about $5 USD for shipping. I figured, two or three hundred dollars on equipment and I can learn to make straps 'just like those YouTubers, lol. Well not I'm well into it with tools, some good, some bad, various leather types, and threads, inexpensive to expensive (Fil au Chinois). I soon realized that a) the good strap-makers on YouTube are probably doing it ei…

I still have some finishing work to do but I think this will be my new shooting bag. It's made from Buffalo. Soft leather but very hard to work with. 10 ounce but not stiff enough so there's a 2 - 3 ounce veg tan liner in it. Holds my backup gun, ammo, magazines, tools and accessories. The box if for my magazines and it holds 12 of them. I tried OxBlood for the interior and it matches up pretty well with the Red box. I need to do the edges and finish up the bottom to match the seams. It's still a work in progress but I wanted to get it put together so I can see what else I need to do. It's my first bag and I hope to improve on it.

Here is my project for the next few days, its an old swiss army rucksack I bought a looong time ago and have used and abused it. Its time to restore the leather and clean it up for another round of livin in Wyoming. You know I think I paid about 20 bucks for this and now they are "in" and worth much more to some folks, I still have all the straps but the leather is dried out and if you look closely the harness has been repaired at some point but I like the repair so will just attempt to restore the leather and fix a few stitches here and there. I have already saddle soaped the bottom and a few of the straps and the leather seems to be coming out of it pretty well.

I don't know the proper place to post this so I'll let the mods place it in the right spot. My question is, Are there on- line retailers that sale watch band supplies like buckles and other watch band related supplies? I am a watch collector AND a leatherworker. I sometimes want a certain type of leather strap but can not find what I want premade. Plus it make more sense to make my own bands than buy from others. I have been using buckleguy.com but I was wondering if there are other resources that provide the same things. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, JerryS

With laser you can cut your pattern's pieces or engraved your photos or self designs in leather. If you use a laser machine I would like see your works and read your experiences. You can see a sample here One more pic from M&K Engraving

Happy New Year leatherfans! I have leather furniture in my livingroom, is contemporary leather couch and love seat, Have any of yall ever refinished this sort of stuff? Is a cream color, still decent shape but has discolored from wear and some from mildew on the backs etc where they are against walls or other stuff. Was looking to try a spray on colorant to refresh the look. So any input is hugely welcome.

Hope all is well with everyone! I figured I would upload a segment of the process in producing a couple of my product lines. (DNA Glove & Leather Six Pack) Creating a glove was the first leather project I started back in 2012. After spending over three years messing around with new product ideas concerning leather, producing a glove entirely by hand from scratch isn't as overwhelming as what it used to be. There's not that much info on this site about what exactly it takes to produce a glove. Hopefully one day baseball & softball gloves will have their own section on the site! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPjpGppQ2gM&feature=youtu.be http://www.kozi…
