Leather Side - How Much Of The Leather Is The Back Portion
dirtclod replied to DavidL's topic in All About Leather
I sure wouldn't buy the pieces !! Depending on what you making it could be to small or you could have a lot waste. With a side you have room to rearange things. As as how much is back depends on how they trim the belly and the neck. But i would say on a 20 square foot side 15 to 16 foot is good and on a good belly you can make some small things like coasters and such. Your going to have scrap no matter what you buy. -
Fishing Bag With Class
dirtclod replied to GamberLeathercrafter's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Nice work ! I really like the worm. -
How ever you buy it by the side or a back your going to pay for the belly. If you get a back it's going to cost more per square foot than square footage by the side. It's as broad as it is long IMHO.

How To Keep Things Clean When Dyeing Leather?
dirtclod replied to HC009's topic in How Do I Do That?
When i dye i keep a piece of cardboard box under what i'm dyeing and use it when i pour from one bottle to another. When the cardboard gets really messed up throw it away and get another piece. -

Looking For Tips On Cutting Perfectly Square
dirtclod replied to jenkins's topic in How Do I Do That?
You can try a stainless steel cork backed ruler. The ones i have i found at a office supply store. The cork is supposed to keep it from slipping, but i never have tried it. 15 inch rulers are the handiest for me. -

dirtclod replied to LeatherHead99's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
It looks to me like your bending the leather on the grain / hair side back on it's self causeing the wrinkles. I call it breaking the grain. -

This is what i was talking about when i said they used the cheapest leather they can buy. For some reason i can't get it to load here or youtube but he is talking about the beauty of scars. In other words the cheapest side they can buy ! He talks so much HYPE about the scars, scratches and cuts he makes people think their LUCKY to get a piece with a big scar. Notice to that the comments are turned off. Guess he didn't want folks saying that the leather was crap.

You will need a strap cutter of some kind, head knife or round knife, 5/8, 3/4, 1 inch round or english point punches for the strap ends, 3/4 or 7/8" bag punch for buckle holes, cutting board for cutting and punching, edgers size 2 and 3, punch for adjustment holes, maul or mallet for driving punches and i'm probely forgetting something but all that will get you going. Oh a sewing machine if you want to make any money.

It looks to me like it's a Nubuck leather. Call around and see if the folks selling it will send you a little piece. Oh the other thing you need to make you bag like they do is buy the cheapest crapest full of brands and scratches leather you can find. That's what they use and brag about it on you tube. Just more hype for them to make more money.

Is The Highlead Brand Good Quality?
dirtclod replied to MADcrafter's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I have one i bought second hand and so far it has worked fine. I don't use it alot all i have done is oil it. I think it's the same model as the one your looking at. If i was going to buy a new machine i think i would get a Consew or Chandler from Bob at Toledo Sewing Machine http://www.tolindsewmach.com/ for the support.- 4 replies

Bought A C.s. Osbourne Draw Gauge, Seems Just A Bit Off
dirtclod replied to Mike516's topic in Leather Tools
Charging way more than it cost for shipping is a biggie for me to. I was going to but something the other night and everthing was fine till i got the shipping. $12.50 for something that would fit a small flat rate box or heaven forbid they acutely weighted and it put it in a regular USPS box. I send quite a few things out through the mail and charge $6.00 for priority mail. Sometimes it a little less sometimes a little more so i know what it should cost or close to it anyway. That person lost my business by gouging on the shipping. I guess some sellers don't care and more important customers don't care. -
Sewpro Mini 441... First Machine Ever. Now What?
dirtclod replied to oclack's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Put a spool of thread on the stand. Pull it down through the disk on and to where you stick a bobbin on. Get a bobbin stick the end of the thread through the slot on the bobbin. Wind some thread onto the bobbin, stick it on the shaft. Push the piece on the side of the wheel where you bobbin is till it clicks. Stick something under the foot and sew the bobbin will wind if not wind it the other direction. When it's full it click back. Or you can get something and slide the bobbin down onto it stick your stick in a cordless drill and wind. That's what that thing is on your table on the right hand side.- 10 replies

Put a few drops of oil in the all the holes you see especially the ones with red paint around them. Most of the new machine have red paint anyway. I generally put a couple of drops in the shuttle to. -
He's sold 12 things and has feedback for two of the things pictured.
