How Do I Keep The Dye From Rubbing Off My Edges!
Phatdaddy replied to Kcinnick's topic in How Do I Do That?
I use a combination of these suggestions. - Use preferred edge beveler if desired. - Sand edges as needed (dust off any leather dust) - Dye edge - Finish edge with preferred method Kevin -
Possibly close to something oil tanned and sucked some oil out from it? I've seen some veg tanned hide do this when I had it touching a roll of oil tanned leather. Looked very similar. Just a thought. Kevin

That is beautiful. Amazing work. Kevin

It made sense to me. I only needed the wedge to make up the difference between where the very large guard rests on the back of the sheath and the top of the blade. If you can picture the knife laying on a table with the tip touching the table and the guard also and see that triangle. The blade as I have done runs exactly along the welt and the wedges just house open space. If I wedged front and back with the welt straight down the middle the welt would not have been on the same angle as the blade. This may be all wrong, it was a learning experience and the first time doing it. Kevin

It is made for a right handed person, but, they wish to wear it on their left side. I didn't argue, (except about the rivets mentioned above) did as they requested. Thanks for the comments guys. Cheers, Kevin

Philips Engraving has shipped mine a few days ago, while I still haven't received it, the process up to this point was VERY pleasant. I dealt with "Alex" via email during the design process where I provided a very crude description of what I was looking for and she quickly sent me a .PDF with the proposed design.(I found out later Alex is female, when my wife called in our CC details not that it matters, I had just made an assumption) There were a couple of changes I asked to have made once I got a visual of it, they never batted an eye, made the changes and just as quickly sent me a new .PDF and it was BANG ON. I can't see the finished product being a disappointment (I will follow up) and their customer service to this point is second to none. Here is another link with some other reviews, which was a huge help in my decision. Phillips Review Hope this helps, Kevin

Fishing Wallet

Just looked at this again with the new comments, i still love it, but I noticed the lacing looks backwards to me. I could be wrong, but it looks like you laced it with the guts facing you puting the nicer side of the lacing inside. Just a thought. Kevin -
I have a lamp with a built in magnifying glass for tying small flies for fly fishing. The one I have isn't here but there is a number of other ones. Walmart Lamps One of these may work for your issues with small lettering. Kevin

Here is what I came up with. This is what it will be for this one as I need to get it shipped. I really am interested in criticism because I want to get better at these things as I really enjoy making knife sheaths and outdoor gear. It's not stitched yet, I talked the customer out of any rivets, and they only wanted a single stamp so it isn't tooled. Thanks for looking/criticizing/helping! *edit - the line under the top most piece of leather is dye from dying the underside before assembly it is not a gap. Also I'll be sanding it a bit more. Kevin

I had that problem with Internet Explorer. (never in Firefox) I checked for updates, then I cleared my cookies and all temp files and disabled some random unidentified plugins. One of those fixed it or a combination of all. Hope that helps, Kevin

Thanks a ton for your help. Kevin

The ones that I have used the screws only had slots, no head, and were easily screwed down just past flush and haven't had any issue with them backing out with a little blue loctite. Kevin

So, I want to put a full thickness welt the whole way around, I believe I'll need to add 2 more thicknesses in wedges/shims I think I've seen them mostly added to the backside of the welt, is this standard? Also is there a certain angle I should try to attain when skiving the wedges? I appreciate any help, thank you. Kevin

Looks good to me. If i was to offer any suggestion would be to smooth out the bevel marks a bit more other than that it looks great. Can I ask what it is? Kevin

I'm making a sheath for someone and the request is far from the original. I've never had to make a sheath before that required multiple pieces to accommodate the very large guard on THIS knife. Laying down, from the bottom of the guard to the topside of the blade is just shy of 1/2". I'm looking for some tips/advice when adding a welt with "wedges" (feel free to correct my terminology) Thanks, Kevin
