  1. It would probably cost just as much to start over with a new one. As for your idea, it would be costly unless you already have engraving tools. People that do have them make custom tooling stamps for themselves. Thanks for the ideas.
  2. I may have to try this. Thanks , Chas.
  3. It looks pretty cool.
  4. Great job on both Rossr. I bet that knife has a great balance to it.
  5. Capt, that big sheath is awesome.
  6. Here are some pics of the stamp. First time to be seen on the open net. I built the image on Adobe CS4. In the impression you can see the slope. The left is at the proper depth going to an almost too shallow on the right. My idea for the stamp is "Leather Nut". In this image you can see how the face and back are not parallel. The post is set square to the back face. Rossr and I were discussing how I might be able to fix it. But it will leave at the most a shallow impression.
  7. I have one with the same can. It doesn't last. I need to replace mine. That's good advice.
  8. Mine isn't really exciting. Biker Mutt=Matt 07 part of my # Maybe I should change the name. Had to sell my bike this year. The sad thing is, it wasn't that big of a loss. My first business stole my passion for riding. We had a small motorcycle magazine franchise. I rode everywhere for two years. Covering up to 5 events in a weekend. By the time I sold it, it was just another vehicle without air conditioning. As far as my makers mark. I designed one I really like. I spent over a 100 dollars to have it made for my small press out of stainless. It took about a month to get. Then I found the face was cut at a slopeing depth across the face and out of square with the post. So, when you stamp it, one side is shallow while the other side is digging in. And the producer of this product has dropped off the face of the planet. Very disappointed.
  9. Those are looking great. In you op you mentioned a conference in the spring. That wouldn't be the National Art Teacher Convention would it? My wife is an art teacher and we considered going. But other trips are putting that one off.
  10. Any success? As for poking yourself.... I use a wine cork to back up the leather when stitching. That was the awl goes into the cork, not me. I'm not a fan of spilling my sissy juice.
  11. Welcome aboard. Here is something I like to share with newer folk.... Start in small batches of the same small item. This will give you great yield from your leather while you develop all the techniques. It will give you more time to practice each step. Plus if you botch a few you can keep progressing without starting over.
  12. Fwiw, if anyone is in the arklatex area or passing through Shreveport, La. Hit me up. I have several pieces of granite in the backyard. I had made a thread about this awhile ago, but no takers. Some of what I have is as big as 25x36. These are free to leather workers on this site. Cheers.
  13. Maybe we could make some stuff up? Like, polyester braided thread held the spacesuits together on the Apollo missions. Nylon was used by the cosmonauts.
  14. I share this with all newcomers. Start in small batches of the same small item. This will give you great yield from your leather while you develop all the techniques. It will give you more time to practice each step. Plus if you botch a few you can keep progressing without starting over. Good luck.
  15. Great job. Road kill couch is an odd beast. Way to up cycle.
  16. If I only had my bandsaw up and running. This looks very easy to make.
  17. I love it. Looks very period. I didn't know heritage made a .357. How's the action?
  18. I found my only use for a stitch groover was to help make a better bonding surface when glueing.
  19. I don't machine sew, Yet. But from all I have read poly is supposed to be more resistant to sunlight. That's all I got. (Following along for the lesson).
  20. Not that I know of. What type of dye, strength, method\ applicator did you use?
  21. I'm sorry for the loss of your brother. That is a trying loss. I'm the youngest of four boys. When my oldest brother was 18, he was murdered (I was only 8). I don't remember much about him, but I sure remember what it was like without him. God bless. (Sorry, music got me a little stirred)
