It's strongly recommended that you give your location in threads like this. I for one, assume you're not local to me, with your spelling of "colour", but that's not always an indicator, and it could be Canada, eh?

Thanks! I love old buildings. But then, I was born in '53, so super old is relative.
-
You have more leather than I do. How old is that building? It looks it's been there for a while. Jeff

Do they have holes through the middle of them? A rein rounder kit? Just guessing. The brass alone should be worth something, if nothing else. Kind of hard to tell the size of them without something for scale.

Thanks, JLS! That is some great info. I do a fair amount of splitting with my cheap-a$$ed Tandy splitter, but every time, I have to take some scrap and figure out, again, how to set up the thickness. Does anybody make a "thickness gauge" the you can insert in the splitter to set the thickness? Jeff (The OTHER Jeff)

If you pay the same, or even a little more than Tandy, (but you'll likely pay less), but you don't have massive amounts of waste, you are still ahead. If you have a lot of small bits to cut out, Tandy can work. But the length of a belt, or anything larger than maybe a wallet or so, you will have to be creative to make it fit without various holes and blemishes. Just bite the bullet and get something good. Hide House seems to have a pretty good following. Springfield leather is another that has some good stuff. Others will chime in soon. 9/10oz is a good weight for a lot of items. You don't want to go too thick on most belts. Especially if you're going to line them. Might be a bit much for radio straps. There's a guy on here that specializes in Firefighter stuff, maybe he'll chime in too.

Same here...and their tools don't seem to fit the nasty snaps they sell. Heaven know what 4th rate source they have. I'd like to have back the money I put into their stuff that doesn't work, or fit, or last. Live and learn.

And, how would it compare to a lube pot?

It is visible. But, what're ya gonna do? My first belt I used two lengths of thread, since then, I've fought the beast and have done it with one thread. Then...I got a machine! My old bod and arthritic hands just can't take it anymore.

Trust me...that's a good thing. My work surfaces would look a LOT different if I had to fold them up after use!

Ah, I see. Lever doesn't go all the way to reverse, just enough to move the foot. I'll have to try that. Some serious practice is in my future. Thanks

How do I find out suppliers that support the forum?
alpha2 replied to bermudahwin's topic in Suppliers
I was wondering what everybody was talking about with the ads, then I realized I had my ad blocker on. I made an exception for the forum. JLS leather is on facebook also, I noticed his site was down, too. -
I can where that would work. I'm no where near the point yet where I could estimate 4 stitches from a certain point where the needle will end up! I know...practice. And what do you mean "at the lugs"? Is that a watch-band thing? Thanks, Jeff

I don't understand what you're describing. If you're approaching a corner, how do reverse to get there? I've got a reverse lever, but don't see how that will precisely put a stitch in a corner. I'm likely picturing it all wrong?

One way is to peruse the ads at the top of the forum page. (Unless you have ad-blocker on). These are suppliers that actually buy ad space that helps keep the forum up and running. A lot of them are also active participants on the forum. -
I just checked, it's a long stitch. Yetibelle nailed it. I must have turned the corner with the needle up.

Rattlesnake handle? Now you've risked bringing RolandRanch out of his burrow!
-
That's my plan, Aussie!

Hmmm, I have an old pair of boots...
-
Ignore the poor placement of the belt-end punch...this was all about the point!

Here's my practice points from a moment ago. I think I've got it. Thanks, guys!

So you hand stretch or compress the stitch length with the presser foot still down, right? I'l try that on a few pieces tonight. Thanks for tip. Yes, I'm using an edge guide. I did pretty good with the guide on a couple of pieces, but on a long belt, I know I'd drift away at some point. Jeff
