Glue on edges squeeze out, won't burnish well

A few tips: Go easy on the glue! There should be a very thin film of tacky contact cement on your pieces and then press the edges together and hammer down with a flat, smooth hammer to set. Leave a little extra leather in your patterns so you can trim the edge after gluing. This allows you to have a perfectly smooth, flush edge cut with a razor blade. I personally don't sand much if any when I leave extra and cut it with a sharp knife. The edges should be already perfect. -

My brother brought some leather back with him from Morocco recently and man does that have a smell! Seems like they must use urine in the mix. It's decent leather but the back on the cowhide is so marked by fleshing knives that it needs to be lined.

Thanks for the great description and background! I'm sure yours is much more historically accurate than mine but who knows, maybe rich, flashy military men would have had a cover like this. The single strap holds it securely but you can still easily rotate it off to the side to rapidly fire.

Thanks guys! It's a relatively uncommon but very useful accessory. Historically there is almost nothing to go on as "lock covers" are referenced but not described and I don't think there are any surviving examples. The idea with these covers is to create something that is accurate in design, materials, and style which didn't necessarily exist but could have. Here's a picture of it on my brother's longrifle.
