start at the bottom and work up form there, taking 1-2 coils off at a time. I prefer to use a Dremel with a cutting wheel on it. glenn

My binders are all custom made. They started at $350.00. Where I worked before I retired, we set up a symmetric feed binding on a Pfaff 1295 post walking foot machine . it was made for us by Atlanta Attachment They make the best binders bar none. However, you pay for it. That set ending up costing $1350.00. Not cheap. The throat plate, feed dog, binder holder, all custom made. And that did not include the 2" clean finish top and bottom binder with a 3/8" fold over which cost another $400.00!!! Trust me, $111.00 is cheap!!! you get what you pay for. glenn

That machine does not have 4 motion drop feed which would be a -372. It has what is called skiff feed- feed dog goes back and forth but does not drop down. made for binding!!! glenn

Unscrew the top tension knurl screw. Remove the big tension spring. Cut a couple of twists off the spring, put back in a te4st. Tension still high at lowest setting, remove and cut more off. For some reason, Pfaff putt these high tension springs into the machine. Never had any Pfaff cylinder arm where I did not have remove the spring and cut some length off the tension spring. glenn

If you had to chose - 205 374 or 205 370
shoepatcher replied to Kovac's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Yes, replace feed dog and throat plate with non toothed or smooth parts. Tell the dealer if you buy the 370 model, you want smooth parts on it!! glenn -

Sounds like the feeding ratio is off. Can we see a video in slow motion to see how machine is feeding? Turn the balance wheel by hand if you have to. glenn -

shoepatcher replied to Kovac's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
The 374 is the earlier version of the 205. There are more differences than just the feed dogs and feet. It was produced for about the first 6 months of the machines introduction. The machine was delayed about 15 months before it came to market. Adler was still working out the bugs. Keep in mind this was late 1985 when the machine was introduced! Adler made a number of changes to the machine after the first 6 months it was on the market. Larger handwheel, different lift system which they eliminated. Durkopp bought Adler 20 years ago. I know a lot about these machines. I have sewn on both and worked on both. In fact, I sent samples of materials to be sewn on to Adler in 1984. They were sent to Germany and sewn on before the 374 before it was introduced. I still have the samples in a file cabinet! I would spend the extra money and buy the 370. Reason. The availability of parts on the older machine. I have a 370. We had both at the place I retired from. Both sew great. If you ever want to put a binder on it, the 370 has the plug hole in the arm to connect the binder to. The 374 does not. Both machines look in great shape. The 374 was built in Germany. The 370 in the Czech Republic. No real difference in quality. Also, the 370 is on an off the arm stand which I prefer. glenn -
The 669 can sew 3/8" or more depending on what the material is. If hard leather, no. It is rated for 3/8". If thicker, then you are into harness weight class of machines. glenn

DBsavajoe, The DA669 of which I have one is the best narrow cylinder arm of the market. It is a new generation machine with new engineering features. Seiko now makes one as well but does not have as high a lift or as long as stitch. I would look at both. The DA is over $4,000.00 but what a machine. PM is you need more info. glenn

Anybody parting out an Adler 67 or a 167? Need Part
shoepatcher replied to Kryptonite's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
You are buying the entire assembly which is how they sell it now. The 4 at the end of the part number means it is an assembly. glenn -

Get the bad screws out any way you can and REPLACE them. I always clean up or replace screws when i go over and rebuild machines. Will cost you some money but well worth it in the end. I hate when people bugger up screws and make no effort to clean them up for the next guy!! glenn -
Amen to that reply Wiz. glenn

112W139 is a double needle walking foot machine. In essence, a double needle 111W155. The 251-13 is a bottom feed high speed machine used mostly in apparel. Neither have reverse. glenn

ADLER 205 is dropping stitches, fraying etc.
shoepatcher replied to HazelB's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Check the timing BOTH in forward and reverse. That hook must come as close to the needle as possible without touching it. Timing could be fine in forward but not in reverse. Allen Burkholder at Weavers is probably the finest technician on that machine in the WORLD. I say that because he has worked on this particular model of machine for over 25 years. He knows them backwards and forwards. He has taught me a lot about the machine. Steve at Cobra and Bob at Toledo are also very very good, All of them will tell you the hook must be ever so close to the hook without touching it. I would try another spool of thread as well. Check the thread path for burrs as well as the hook. These machines do get out of time both hooks and needle bars. One way to check the timing is to sew forward and then go in reverse 12 stitches. If it misses at all in those 12 stitches in reverse, timing is off. glenn- 5 replies

Stitch Length HELP needed Consew 287R
shoepatcher replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
CustomDoug, Feed dog way to high in the one picture. I said 1/2 of a tooth above the throat plate. That is what I used on my Consew 227R many years ago. if feed dog to high, you will have problems. Make sure outside foot tension is not to great as well. High feed dog height will affect the outside foot tension. glenn -
Stitch Length HELP needed Consew 287R
shoepatcher replied to CustomDoug's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Looks like a Consew 227 R-1. Feed dog seems to be hitting on the back of the throat plate slot. the feed dog space from the front and back of the slot should be the same. If not, that has to be centered. If feed dog is too long in front or back, I sometimes grind the feed dog down in front or back a little. Either way, at the max. stitch, should NOT be hitting the feed dog plate. You get the feed dog centered in the throat plate front to back. Then you center the needle into the feed dog hole. Then, I check to make sure the feed dog is only 1/2" the height of the teeth above the throat plate. NO more! If needle is now centered in feed dog hole, I then equalize the walk height of each foot. This procedure correct BOB? Feed dog look long to you front to back Bob? glenn
