Get a fixed quote prior to giving them a fee hand to upgrade, I would just ask them to do there testing after repair on the 138 thread before mentioning any upgrade

Need advice on buying my 1st HD sewing machine.
chrisash replied to ricknrrs's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
The main point is there is no one machine that will sew thick and thin leather, you have to make a choice buy two machines Wiz a forum member as produced a first class post on the subject see -
Uwe Many thanks for the above video, i only had a very vague idea of the Bobbin case opener function, your video is the perfect explanation, I doubt I would have figured it out the reason for it in a hundred years

I have been into making ladies bags over last few months using chrome leather and patterned fabric and found quite a few sites that sell patterns and instructions all that can use industrial or many domestic machines, this YouTube page will give you some ideas even if the lady gets a bit boring https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7tkgpu9sn37sjWHRmERi0g and a bag design site is https://shamballabags.com/en/15-patterns-in-english

Need advice on buying my 1st HD sewing machine.

When you say "Heavy Duty" do you mean a Industrial Machine or a Heavy duty domestic machine, the domestic models would have problems with most veg tan leathers -
If its got the normal two switches labelled P & S or similar , then the left button in my case marked P is the button that goes through the variable functions and the right button S is pressed to change the function settings, where if you keep pressing it then it goes through all option's and back to the original setting After alliterating a setting you press the left button to set the new value Most i have seen just have two buttons and a display As Wiz states a photo may help get results from similar models under a different name

You may find some basic courses locally as in the UK there are some running for between 1 to 5 days though quite expensive, most people i think use YouTube as a good learning aid with lots of great videos, one that covers many beginners questions is https://www.youtube.com/c/JHLeather/videos

Maybe a simplistic answer but have you considered Rolled inward edges so both the top and bottom are skived & rolled between both sides
-
My suggestion would be, to ask the owner to take it to a leather restorer to sort it out; and then give it to you to frame, it's not really a job to learn the skills on

Singer Electric Transmitter how old and how save to use ?
chrisash replied to Oldiesfan's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Many of this age are just a fire hazard waiting to happen, and whilst you are probably insured, the problems in moving to a new house might make the Euro 150 servo a better piece of mind -

Assistance asked for locking stitches
chrisash replied to chrisash's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Thanks wiz, by adjusting the check spring do you mean moving it either left of right with that screw adjustment so you rotate the check spring unit -
I have a bit of a problem with using my Singer 111G155 for reverse When i start a line of sewing, I stitch 2 or 3 stitches and then slightly lifting the feet move the leather back to the position of the first stitch and continue sewing the line, same at the end of line so both ends have locking stitches Trouble is sometimes it seems to screw up and i get a double pickup of the bobbin thread and jam's the machine by holding it down to the bobbin What am i doing wrong, sometimes it works well others it screws up, apart from that its perfect

Vintage Industrial Sewing Machines ( on Facebook)
chrisash posted a topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Just found this forum on Facebook "Vintage Industrial Sewing Machines" which has a lot of interesting followers but massive amounts of info in the Files section on vintage machines -
If you are professional in the UK maybe the same in the states, when you buy a new toy like a sewing machine, you can depreciate it on the accounts for normally 5 years, so you don't have to worry about resale value until you sell it say after 5 years and make a taxable profit The only thing i believe is positive resale value is used light aircraft where if you keep one for a few years it may well have a increased resale price, but to be fair you have probably spent a fortune on its upkeep anyway

It's funny how we consider resale value on some items yet never consider it for some of our most expensive purchases like Cars that loose 20% or more of buying price when you drive out from the garage you brought it from

At first glance at the image it looks more like a gold impression where they have the design embossed on a plate and then heat the plate and place a bit of a foil between the heated plate and the leather using one of these machines Leather Heat Press Machine Hot Foil Printing Stamping Logo Embossing Bronzing | eBay -
Welcome from your neighbour across the sea, enjoy leatherwork and be prepared to spend a small fortune with your new hobby I seem to remember that Holland has a annual or maybe bi-annual leather show that has a world wide attendance, not shore if its trade of all sorts, no doubt someone will fill in the details Enjoy

Testing any machine on a single layer is a pointless test as you will always be sewing either two or more layers. No doubt the tension setup he has works, just try wit two or three layers of what you intend to sew and the thread you want to use both top and bottom and start testing in the real world If the bobbin drops down when you shake the thread slightly when holding the thread above it with the bobbin off the floor then thats about right for the bobbin tension, then depending if the knot is either above or below the surface of the leather when you sew make adjustment's to the top tension to get the know between the layers
