TOTALLY BUMMED OUT!! CANT GET A COBRA Class 26!
chrisash replied to KennethLee's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Your looking for reliability among the different makes, it's hard to find that information on a forum where people tend to advertise the brand they brought; and only have limited if any information on other machines Might be better asking professional sewing machine mechanics, "what make has the fewest problems and easiest spares supply" Sometimes its hard to see through the marketing to get the true information. and many purchases are made only on price -
Adler parts are expensive but and a big but, they are the Rolls Royce of sewing machines and therefore less likely to need spares
-
Whilst I cannot answer your question , there is a lot of information in previous posts available if you use the search bar for "singer 29K" include the commers This is one post that relates to one mans repair of the stitch length

Unable to get enough power on the little screw driver to adjust the bobbin tension, have tried to remove hook to get at it at proper angle but hook 2 top screws also locked hard Machine has not been used for a time and from the looks the last owner only used 69 thread so maybe screws have been left alone for quite a while Can you get right angle screwdrivers that come in such a small size Any other suggestion, working at present but bobbin tension quite loose, but would like to free up hook assembly to clean up and oil etc Screwdrivers used 2.4 mm and 3 mm

"Melts Paraffin" seems a strange thing to do when in the UK it only comes in liquid form, and heating that would be a dangerous job Off-cuts are often sold and can work out a chap option for practice

I feel you should not practice repetition but just keep picking a new design each day to practice on, google will give you lots of sketches to copy along with many leather related web pages Sitting down doing scrolls all day is boring and just learning to copy one or two designs Please note, I am still crap with tooling, and with a swivel knife, but having tried the scroll way, i soon got bored trying and went to a new simple design each day, and have seen a improvement, but a 74 i think its a bit late to expect great improvement on my skill level

Trying to convert singer 45k76 to self feeding sewing machine
chrisash replied to Bow's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
You may well find that the price for these obsolete parts required will cost far more than buying another machine. and spend months finding the parts if at all The model 45 is popular with leather workers, so i doubt many spares will be available, but most will have been horded for the future when or if needed -
Vibrating presser foot tension spring adjustment thumbscrew
chrisash replied to chrisash's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Many thanks -
Trying to understand the purpose of this part "Vibrating presser foot tension spring adjustment thumbscrew" noting in general instruction operations and the US Navy instructions just confuse me, So my question is when and why should i make any adjustment by turning it Many thanks, it sews well as it is so don't want to play around with adjustments just for the sake of it

Ahh I did not see the matching stand its sitting on, so that's worth a bit extra selling in UK for about £80 to £150 alone

Whilst anything is possible, it is very hard to find spares for the early models up to the version 29k5x I sold my 29K53 a few months ago at about £200 after buying it 18 months previous for £95 at a car boot sale. EBay prices in the UK seem rather overpriced to say the least unless the latest versions the series 29K7X Hopes this helps

Important Customs news for UK/Eu leatherworkers
chrisash replied to fredk's topic in Marketing and Advertising
It makes sense for companies to wait now, to see what happens on the 1st, Someone in the UK cannot bring in a few thousand bottles of French Wine as no transport available for hire to deliver to UK. this was in UK papers yesterday. Both UK container posts full and ships waiting 10 days to get a berth due to companies buying in stock prior to the 1st. People complaining lack of information, but until a deal is done or not, I guess both sides cannot predict the outcome, as usual all EU matters tend to go down to last few minutes -

Whilst it true the EU is a massive market, I wonder what percentage of our exports go to the newer states (i.e. joined after the common market) i would guess most still goes to the traditional western edge of the EU The problems on customs etc will take a time to sort out but I assume the UK is looking for the long term not say the next six months Tariff;s are strange animals after all Trump put up imported sewing machines by 25% yet the price i assume is now seen as normal after what 18 months or so, he has increase imports duty on many EU items over the fight with Boeing, yet apart from the first few days you hear little of it now -
Important Customs news for UK/Eu leatherworkers
chrisash replied to fredk's topic in Marketing and Advertising
We voted to leave and regain our own control of our destiny, whilst the member states of the EU prefer to give control to the federation rather than each state With this setup it hardly seems possible that the two sides could agree, sovereignty to us means self control and after such a long fight to regain it after being sold down the river, in joining the EU without a vote by the UK people, its not something to give back power to the EU If the EU demanded the USA followed their rules to get a trade deal, would you expect the US to agree -

Need help with Singer 211U566A
chrisash replied to Parfektionisto's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
So what was the problem and how did he solve it? -
No doubt they said the same about Chrome leather. and from a few comments over time. on this and other forums it would appear that some only consider veg tan as real leather working
-
Often its the design that takes presidence over strength on leather made goods, a seam made with 69 bonded nylon is very hard to break as the pressure is across the whole seam rather than a single stitch. on other items strength is more important than design

Seiko STH-8BLD-3 or Consew 206 RB-5
chrisash replied to Don Ayres's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I thought many famous makes, have products made in China and the far east, I imagine that Consew, and the other big names in leather sewing machines have their own Quality Control experts watching every step in production to ensure country of manufacture does not effect quality That's not to say that some clones on offer from some Chinese companies may not be built to the same standards -
The designs in Valeria Michael's "Leatherworking Handbook which you can see on her website, do appear quite basic, but not having seen the book its hard to give a real appraisal, but at that price i would expect more https://leatherworkschool.com/

I have Valeria Michael's "Leatherworking Handbook and found it useful though the plans are rather difficult to understand as more than one design on a page. good starter book

I spent a few months on Brown and Root barges in West Africa many years ago now, working in the tower, there were two guys operating the anchor winches who chewed tobacco and had mugs into which they spat their old tobacco, never cleaned them out so good layer of growth after a month of more all over the spit. Glad when i left that barge

Pfaff are a well respected make from Germany which is renown for its mechanical engineering and the machine seems to fit the bill you need. Industrial machines do take some learning and none seem to come with more than very basic instructions , seemingly expecting everyone to have assistance when starting out YouTube is your friend with lots of video's on sewing leather with industrial machines, and for the most part the actual a machine does not make any difference it's Technic you are looking to learn One thing about this forum, nobody cares if you ask simple questions or either what may sound stupid ones, they will offer assistance happily, we all have to learn somewhere, you can also type into the search bar and find loads of previous posts about your machine type "Pfaff 145" and there are about 300 posts which may help you Happy learning and sewing

The cheapest motorized Chinese Cobbler?
chrisash replied to SmartShop's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
As the 100 watt motor has most of its power at the top end of it's revs, I question if it will have enough power to slowly go through thick leather
