  2. Sorry to hear the news. looking at the fb page he must have been a skilled leatherworker
  3. One thing for sure these jackets are made by a master craftsman with what looks like a few layers of leather sewn on top of each other some parts may well be veg tan, though i imagine the base may well be made of chrome leather or soft veg tan By the looks of it it may take a few hundred hours to make and NOT something a learner in leatherwork would have the skills to make which accounts for the cost
  4. It's hard for us in the UK to understand the pressure you guys live with day by day. we have been lucky in that we only had one large school shooting in a Scottish town called Dunblane in 1996 killing 18 people including the shooter, and shortly after the government banned all handguns throughout the UK and strict controls on licence for rifles and shotguns Schools have locked entrance doors and fence around the outside perimeter as far as practical but that's about it
  5. Sorry Wiz but must ask, "why do schools need blackout blinds for their doors"
  6. Or follow this lead, please note only small differences in most of the 29 versions but the 18 is a very old model (8) singer 29 patcher in operation - YouTube you can find the full list of the various version differences here Comprehensive Singer Sewing Machine Model List Classes 1-99 (ismacs.net)
  7. Nobel thoughts but hard to find real alternatives. with all first world companies making clones of sewing machines in the past, the moment the patents have either expired or have brought a licence to make under their own name, it's hard to blame a company in a low labour cost area not exploiting a perceived gap in the market. also unfortunately European/US companies find that labour costs mean they price themselves out of the market unless they lower their costs, few will pay to modernise with new machines so they lower costs on quality hoping nobody will notice Ebay is where you will find them but at greatly overpriced values
  8. This video link shows the difference between the Brushless and brushed servo motors which may help you decide (6) Difference between "Brushless" and "Brushed" typed sewing machine servo motors (Remake) - YouTube

  12. If a small back street garage could buy all the component's of industrial sewing machine in China, market them and sell them, why does not a US or European company do the same. lets face it selling industrial machines is quite a hard challenge at the best of companies, so although you might, and I say might be able to get the component's, its would be the cost of marketing and selling that would cost far more than making up a few machine to sell I would imagine, but do not know for sure, that there are only a few very large manufacturers in China of industrial sewing machines, all of whom sell badged up machines to any company who wants to buy them, they will also make adjustments to machine designs to any company who orders enough to make it worth while changing the production lines The future of the large machine makers relies on quality control just the same as any other company in any country for its long term survival The main problem is unquestionable, Service for machines and spare parts availability, this is not the Far Easts area of expertise, and local expertise in this area is worth paying a lot of money for, though not always appreciated
  13. Thanks @Rahere it was the polyester type material I was interested in , it appeared to be tape with sealed edges ideal for slot wallets but may just have been plain poly just just cut to fit
  14. Anyone know what type and name of material is used for the strap type material used to make the card holders below the t slots on this video, and where you can buy it
  15. Is there a general guide on how much you can reduce the thickness to avoid distorting the leather, for instance reducing 3mm leather to 1mm may be to much strain on it even with multiple passes, of do people just limit the reduction to say half or a quarter of the original thickness so you would reduce 3.. to 1.5mm or about 2mm
  16. Pull tabs is a great idea by @Retswerb as long as a wide gap between the pulls, maybe limit to a couple of cards on either side to assist spacing the pulls
  17. I have heard about 007 somewhere, cant remember where though
  18. If you were to go onto Alibaba.com and look at the vast amount of top end machinery that's made in China you might have a more open mind Its easy to look on eBay and see the bottom of the market, displayed there at cheap prices and ignore the top end goods they also make
  19. Have you asked your local sewing machine shops if they have any used machines for sale that fit your requirements, working on the assumption they will have serviced them and also let you try them out before purchase.
  20. I am a old fart that hates electronics, spares are the first thing that become unavailable after a few years, and the ability to repair electronics by the average engineer is normally well past their ability, and even if the cost of fault finding is horrendous
  21. Somewhere on the machine there will be a serial number which you can look up to find date made and model etc see Comprehensive Singer Serial Number Database (ismacs.net)
  22. It looks right through the top tension disc but should then go clockwise around the lower disc, then pulled upright and towards the machine until it goes over a hook and back under the spring
  23. I think that's the point, if you are a experienced sewer then you have built into your skills to get around most things, be it needle positioning or even just using the knee lifter automatically without pressing the foot pedal at the same time accidentally, where as learners may well find it useful to know. when you stop sewing the needle is either up or down whatever you chose also a new user may have a problem doing single stitches to get say to a turning point, again no problem for a expert but useful for someone new to using industrial or domestic machines
  24. I doubt that Juki will have any less quality control in china than in Japan, they did not get their name by skimping on quality
