  1. It sounds like they are making Chrome tan leather which is used for clothing and furniture etc. Veg Tan takes weeks and some many months to tan You can look at the process here from the UK's oldest tannery, and they are rated as one of the worlds best leather makers https://www.jfjbaker.co.uk/
  2. Here are a couple of anti spill dye holders for the small bottles Eco-Flo 130ml anti spill stand v2.stl The images, seems I cannot upload Fiebings stl as over 1.46m
  3. I also agree that Wiz has done a lot of good for the forum But one thing that I do question and not just the US machines but world wide The sewing machine factories I assume do a test stitch into the correct garment for which they were designed for be it leather or cotton, by the factory QC departments, so my question is do the agents really take the machines out of the factory boxes and test them again and then repack to send out to the customers. Or is it just a few buyers who send in a sample piece? The definitely dont on domestic machines
  4. Thanks Brian for starting a very interesting post, I have had to come back to it a year or so later to understand a bit more about Diode lasers I have just ordered a 3.5 watt mini engraver at a silly low price of £80 to play with and see what it's all about, unfortunately the software i understand is very basic and the engraver will not accept GRBL coding which seems a bummer as lightburn seems a good bargan at £40 but sure i will update to a larger engraver once i have learnt the skills Tried to search information on the differences between CO2 and diode on the net but seems everyone talks like a professor of lasers rather than laymans terms and the facebook pages are more industrial or how to, rather than review type information So hopefully in a few weeks my Insma will arrive and open up more thoughts Thanks Brian
  5. BJ Have a look at this site College sewing in the UK they have a few 31 331 parts as shown below and send out world wide https://www.college-sewing.co.uk/parts-by-machine/singer-sewing-machine-parts/singer-31-331k-parts
  6. In your quite times use a simple 3D printer to make round end plugs, I would guess even the cheapest printer could make a 12-18 in one go unattended, and just apply glue and place end over dowel
  7. Ebay is full of Tkt20 threads and in quite a few colours you can also get bonded polyester at solent sailing in a few colours
  8. Its a great looking sheath but With modern nylon /Polyester/ Braided ropes especially if under tension you need a serrated blade to quickly cut through them also the pliers need enclosing more or they will flick out and on a very cold day in a gale you really need heavy duty rubber handles on them Again your work is excellent but after 40 years at sea what looks the most beautiful item at the yacht club, may have failings at sea when life is going against you in a gale
  9. You don't have to pay silly prices like Barry King, Sergey Neskromniy makes first class stamps at a more reasonable price
  10. Well done for trying anyway Fred Maybe a youth organisation could use the spare kits
  11. Is it any wonder the skill and trade is declining, its like going back 100 years to the average school leaver who has spent their lives learning high tech and fast moving skills You can break down the market into a few area's People on this forum most likely hobby or self employed making such exotic items like Belts, Wallets, Card holders and the odd bag and doing the same things time and time again with some variations. People who are basically artists where the main part is tooling to show their skills as artists and get paid well for their skill Then the professionals A few companies who mass produce products for both the low, medium and top end ranges of goods The saddle makers and associated equipment, highly skilled and trained but little room for inventing something new Shoe, car and aircraft industry highly skilled but mainly repetitive work on standard range of items Clothing industry So Tandy has taught many people their skills, made equipment for these people and supplied a wide range of goods, but like all companies is only in business to make a profit There is a market for leather goods, but few will make enough money to compete on wages with the newer taught skills, as a full time job
  12. In many cases the hand sewn item has used thicker thread typically 0.6 or 0.8 mm like tiger thread, but if linen thread is used i think it has far less strength than say tiger On the other hand #277 and #346 are close to or slightly above 0.6mm but i have no knowledge of the breaking strain of tiger thread v 346
  13. The trouble is as far as I can see it , that buyers are moving online at a massive rate, some towns were lucky to have a shop which was the traditional way of selling your goods, but a massive calling on stock held especially in say the US where the distance to restock are vast This virus has woken up all companies that cash in the bank is king, and holding millions in stock of slow moving items is poor management and added to that staffing costs not just in the store but the head office support teams cost mega bucks yet alone rent and rates Nearly everyone on this forum either buys something online or sells online so that's the obvious way for Tandy to go They can also make video's of all training and make them available online for convenience, not the same as one to one but can be a more professional format Just my thoughts, I guess that many of you also brought your sewing machines online as well
  14. I believe that there can be many trademarked logo's for the same name and owned by different companies, although they have to be clear they are not passing off another company
  15. There are some main dealers in the UK who will hire out machines by the week or longer and most will have a few makers models at present Jack seems to be advertising a lot and Highlead, typical are well known makes, I think the JUki 1181 should have a N after the number to indicate its setup for leather and costs a bit extra I would suggest visit a dealer, ask for a demo with 138 thread the largest these machines will take and also bring your leather say a belt and a couple of your thickest leather. Also check out the slowest you can sew with the thickest leather If you explain your financial position they may well have a demo machine they will sell at a discount price as they cannot sell it as new, could be £100 or more depending on how bad they want a customer, I doubt they are selling many at present time Good luck and with a new machine and guarantees I doubt you can go far wrong
  16. I did a canvas and leather tote bag using both domestic machine and Singer 29K53 using 138 thread, no real problems and most of the work done whilst still flat and then finished inside out, largest problem was sewing the top leather edge used this canvas https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Outdoor-Material-Upholstery-delivery/dp/B07RWKK868/ref=sr_1_37?adgrpid=54678997393&dchild=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4L-chJrI6QIVjcDACh3R1Ac2EAMYASAAEgLVg_D_BwE&hvadid=259120338605&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9044854&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=18179408365296493286&hvtargid=kwd-331710641164&hydadcr=18510_1816616&keywords=waterproof+canvas&qid=1590175753&sr=8-37
  17. With a short blade and large thick handle, they do not look like you can do a low angle skive very easily with either of these
  18. Thanks thats handy knowledge, but i wonder if it applies to leather as well, with little give or stretch Rather than making you download the article the main line of thought using cotton and fabric is Formula for Estimating Seam Strength on Woven Fabrics 301 Lockstitch - Estimated Seam Strength = SPI X Thread Strength (lbs.) X 1.5* * 1.5 is a factor based on the average loop strength ratio of most sewing threads. = 10 SPI X 4.0 lbs. X 1.5 = 60 lb. strength Certainly gives food for thought I wonder if any of the machine suppliers on the forum have any input they can give
  19. I think the owner has been lacking, as it does not look like they have followed the manual Oiling and Cleaning Clean machine daily and thoroughly oil with Union Special oil before the morning and afternoon start
  20. Few companies Tandy Leather size go under fully the bones are sold on to someone who no doubt will just go online only to keep costs down. There is a proven market for the goods with little competition for many items as a one stop shop, but selling the odd stamp or item at a local store, does not bring in much money and leather sales are more expensive than other retailers
  21. I doubt that it will sew 8 oz veg tan without a lot of problems, when i tried mine it balked at 4 oz Suggest 69 max
  22. yes that's obvious, Not sure about natural thread though as far weaker breaking strain, and do you have proof it resists cutting better than Bonded What amount of the pressure do the adjoining threads absorb from the total before one in this case #138 breaks at 22 pounds. also does the glue break first I just feel there must be some scientific research done somewhere and we may well be over engineering the strength of thread required on some items Cosmetic decoration is a different matter
  23. I don't think there is a specific name for them, just a genetic one like Tool Holder or Tool Rack or Stamp holder for the smaller stamps
