Yes saves the big factories lots of money but gives the equipment a pre determined life as the electrics die years before the machine and cannot be repaired, so we all either continue to use iron or keep buying new.

It was just a idea but looking into it and the costs of the horse Blanket, there does not seem much money to be made, or at least in Norfolk England, seems the going rate some only charge £20 to pickup, deliver and wash within 5 miles ,so doubt they pay much to repair blankets, so all things considered handling dirty well torn rugs does not appear that interesting, never considered my experience enough to do tack so that was never a option

Well as the say how things are different between two countries, in my time (12 years) in the Royal Navy we never had any repair staff for uniforms, just issued with a small housewife sewing kit of some thread, buttons, needles and darning cotton and told to do it all ourselves, I think our other forces were the same Back to the subject, sewing machines regardless where they are made, most components are probably made by different firms using cad controlled machines to keep the standard high, but assembly is the area where low cost labor play's a major cost saving, I seriously doubt there is any real difference between clones and Juki these days, apart from Juki having the highly skilled design staff where as other countries just copy out of date patent designs. That's not to say all Chinese goods are assembled well in fact we can all name items with missing screws etc In the UK we learnt many years ago you cannot compete with low cost economies in labor hense we lost ship building and many other industries and now rely on high tech and services

I guess you are right, you only need to look on this forum to see the numbers of 20-100 year old machines still being used so few buying the new machines unless really needed The size of thread is often talked down "machine xxx will only use #92 thread" and so on makes me wonder why so much emphasis on 138 or 207, i can understand the aesthetics of a thicker thread but if anyone has ever tried to pull apart two parts of leather sewn in 92 thread its a very strong thread. I do understand that 207 and above have their place specially when half buried in a groove for protection against heavy wear, but 92 fits the bill for many leather requirements as well as 138

Personally I prefer all the tool Handle's to be square or rectangle to i can feel there in the right place, where as round ones you just don't instinctively know, it's like a flat sides Awl you just know when the flat side is in your hand its at the correct angle It's always hard to select as price does not always mean better and we can be influenced by a rare and exotic wooded handle, over the quality of the steel. and our upbringing in society that marketing tells us, the more you spend the better the item That's why they call me the "Grumpy old man"

I read today that China is to be charged a massive amount starting at 10% and going next year to 25% on US import duties, so you guys in the states can expect massive increases in the imported sewing machines very soon, so if in doubt probably a good time to rush out and buy now if you want a new machine Not sure how it will effect the rest of us but as I imagine the US is the largest market, there could be a flood of machines on the market

Now retired but looking for a bit of extra money and we have a stables about 200 yards away from the house, never had anything to do with horses or there requirements apart from one event when a horse tried to step into my open topped sports car (Austin Healey Sprite hard to really classify as a sports car but there you are all 900cc) So thinking of approaching them for any repairs, (definitely not saddles, ) and wondered what sort of requirement they may have and common things they are likely to require, I hear a lot about horse blankets, what does that normally involve Reasonable with Hand stitching and have a Patcher 29K Appreciate any suggestions, remember this is England so maybe a bit different than the USA
