  1. I have seen plenty of tv shots where someone buys a really old battered leather bag and with some cleaning and conditioner plus a lot of hard work end up with a nice looking bag I guess as long as its not cracked up you can reuse it with the antique look already done for you
  2. Hi folk Not thinking of buying one but the often show up for sale, So basic they look like the perfect solution for third world countries and probably have a long life as easy to mend. Just wondering if anyone had used one and how good the sewing is in the right hands see https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332701438530
  3. FredK That is what i am thinking about the female part pressed down over the male mold to give the flat edge to sew
  4. Basically looking at rectangular shape more length than breadth about 1 inch high with well rounded edges using either 2 or 3mm leather
  5. Hi folks If I make a set of Male and Female molds for wet forming, what sort of allowance to i make as a gap between the two, obviously the male it made to the finish size, but the female part needs to allow for moth the thickness of the leather plus i guess a bit more, any idea of the bit more?
  6. I am new to Leatherwork, and have a number of different makes of hand sew threads, mostly in 0.6 and quite honestly,I cannot tell the difference in any of them, I generally buy Tiger as it was used by a expert on a video, and the price difference is so little its irrelevant to me with the small amounts I use. What are you folk seeing that i am missing
  7. You cannot get more traditional than this company in England http://www.jfjbaker.co.uk/
  8. Just show you can get carried away collecting sewing machines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yxsKCiBXuA
  9. I would be more concerned as to why you have seized up parts, I just use the recommended oil the maker suggests and have never had a seized up part or one running hot
  10. Also if you follow how to skive with a knife on Youtube you can reduce all the area's you sew your edges down to a more manageable size so your not working with such large thicknesses at the edges
  11. Why o Why do you go against all the experts on here, your original question was about price for making a turned edge or rolled edge, the price reflects the low volume of people wanting the item so stock hangs around for slow movement and costs the shop nearly dead money You burning idea with the grinder gives the worst finish i have seen and wastes a good grinding disk which also wont last long as noted above I would suggest you follow Nigel Armitage video's on YouTube which cover all your questions and is a master at helping all with his free lessons
  12. Here you go all in this advert http://store.keysew.com/catalog/product/9bbdae051e6143f08e5bb1cd2902de31
  13. Thanks guys Sorry Matt I think i will wait awhile before asking Coco as she is dead and may have her own distinctive smell by now
  14. If you buy a new car with leather seats you open the door and get that nice smell of the leather, some other leather items have this smell. The Veg Tan and Chrome leather i get never seems to have that smell in fact no smell at all Is this a leather conditioner that causes this smell or a special way of tanning leather, whatever causes it does seem to portray a sense of quality just by the smell
  15. Harry Rogers has a comparison on conditioners
  16. I used to do commercial embroidery with computer controlled embroidery machines, we did quite a lot of embroidery directly onto Chrome leather just using leather needles
  17. Being English I might appear a bit dumb, but why do they bother making leather from such small animals, and are they killed for the meat or the skin also I have seen fish skin posted on the forum On a different thing with so many Kangaroos and Camels over there how much do you guys pay for veg tan from their hides
  18. Wait til the wife has gone shopping and sneak them into the dishwasher with a few dishwasher tablets, I know they remove grease from dishes so might work then treat with NFO Try a sample first
  19. In the royal Navy we had ROMFT = Roll on my F***** time you can fill inj the F
  20. Often you can find the area of vibration by touching parts of a machine with a long screwdriver or similar and holding against the head by your ear it amplifies the noise of the vibration allowing a rough position to be found
  21. Lets face it, with cad drawings and cad machines making pricking irons should be a simple enough exercise, where as a few years ago it would be quite a skilled job to do. They still don't spend enough time on finishing; as the big names but quite honestly, i cannot see much future for the small companies producing the high value items like these, in the next 5-10 years as mass production forces constant improvement as well as low prices Interesting video by Harry Rogers on a Cheap Japanese style knife sold on Etsy as a few quid and how the steel is quite good seems to prove the point why mass produce using crap steel when you can spend a tiny bit more and get quite good steel, not the best certainly but maybe a big improvement
  22. Unfortunately the old saying Buy Quality once or buy twice, whilst often very true, Often it can be only experience that tells you exactly what tool you really need and preconceived idea's of quality can sometimes be miss-placed by fact
  23. That weekend bag would convert to a nice doctors / Gladstone bag without much effort, but not in 2oz
