  1. Trying to figure out what the younger generations want. It about killed my soul when I covered up all the shading that you take so much time to get right. Will see how this is received.
  2. I use a set of Barry King's in a size 45. I really like the way they look, and yes they are easier than the 27. Terrt
  3. Welcome , we New Mexicans are far and few on the forum. Where are you in state? We are in the big city of Albuquerque. Ziploc bags are good for maintaining moisture or I use a piece of plate glass to lay on the leather. If you have any questions, I will be happy to try and help. Terry
  4. Tandy sells synthetic wool by the yard in addition to their pads. Just cut your own pads, whole lot cheaper than their product round pads. The stuff works great, use it all the time. Terry
  5. Try North Star Leather. A frequent contributor on this forum Terry
  6. I am going to take a different track on this one. I am noticing improvements in Tandy sin e the new CEO has taken over. I think she is really trying to improve product selection and especially in their pricing. I can now go into the local store and pick up a quart of Barges for the same price as on Amazon. With my business discount, it is actually cheaper than Amazon. I saw where they are bringing Angelus paint into the store and have greatly expanded their Fiebings inventory. It appears their push toward their Eco Flo products is backing off. Now if they would just bring Neatlac and their top of the line leather, I would be a happy camper. I am lucky in that I can go down to the store and dig thru a pile of leather and usually find something that will work. They aren't Barry King or Herman Oak, but at least are trying. You can go down to the local store on a Saturday morning and see quite a few people seated around tables taking lessons.
  7. As far as I am concerned I could care less how much they are paying, and more importantly, it is none of my business. I hope those that are responsible for this forum are making enough to make it worth a while. I am sure it takes a substantial time commitment, and nothing in the world that says a they shouldn't be compensated. That comment about being a contributing member getting a moderator in their pocket is pure bull shit. I have been a contributing member ever since I joined this forum and have never felt I was owed anything. The moderator's function is maintaining the integrity of this platform. We have people from all over the world participating making it enjoyable and informative for everyone involved. There have been too many knowledgeable people quit participating due to the negativity that can show its head. Keep up the good work Joanna, Northmount and all of the rest you that have a role in maintaining this site Thank you Terry
  8. It is dyed, just a lighter color. I treated with Bee's natural saddle oil, don't have any NFO. I gave up on NFO years ago, I just don't like what it does to the leather. A trout's underside is almost a cream color and I can't find a white dye to mix.
  9. Trying to figure out how to carve and dye a trout. The under belly is giving me fits Terry
  10. Applying the paint over a finish will not last. It needs to adhere to a clean surface. Angelis sells a deglazer you would need to use on any parts that you have applied a finish. I think you need to apply a finish to the paint and the only finish I know of, other than the Angelis brand, is Tan Kote. It will not affect the paint. Painting leather is just like painting a car. It is only going to be as good as the surface was prepared. Hope this helps Terry

    Splitter

Unless you have the sharpest splitter blade in the country, you aren't going to split 4" without distorting and stretching the leather. I guess it is possible if the blade is sharp enough. Best solution is to buy the weight you need. Rocky Mountain Supply has a band splitter and they will split at no charge. Terry
  12. I will have to check further. Thank you for the advice
  13. Need some advice. My son in-law has a Pfaff 545 sitting a storage she'd collecting dust. I can have it but I have a couple of concerns, the main one being suitable for lighter weight leather. The heaviest I will ever sew is 12oz, and that would be a lined belt. The majority of what I do is in the 8 to 10 oz range. The other problem is the size of the table. It is mounted on a table 18" X 48", and I will have to figure that out my self. Just looking at it, looks like it belongs in a saddle shop. Thanks for any help, Terry
  14. Haven’t posted in a long time Notebook pad for my grandson’s soccer coach
  15. I will bet it is from Mexico, embossed, with initials stamped. Used to see a bunch of this stuff in Mexico with intricate circle design. Navajos known for rug weaving and silver and turquoise jewelry. Not so much leather although there are talented people out there doing amazing work.
  16. I use a size "0" and is handy to have. The "00" is going to be really small and may be a challenge to use. My only question is, do you really want the extra steep. His normal beveler has a 30 degree slope and is what I use. He also makes a 15 degree beveler which is comparable to your Craftool and has now added the extra steep which is 45 degree. I can see a real benefit to the extra steep in certain situations such as parallel lines close to each other. I intend to get a set. Hope this helps Terry
  17. A Dremel with a fine grit sanding drum works great, just a little messy. A 1" belt sander with a 400 grit belt also will work. More than one way to skin a cat. Hope this helps, Terry
  18. Barry's are still top notch quality. Doubt if you will ever see him cutting corners. Same is true of Robert Beard
  19. I also use that same leather. It is the toughest stuff I have found and resistant to scratches. I have carried mine in front pants pocket along with keys and a pocket knife, and I have yet to scratch the wallet. If you really want to keep it slim, get the people at RMLS to split it to 2 loss. One little suggestion is lay the wallet on your slab and tap the stitches with a metal hammer and this little "pickers" will go away. Hope this helps, Terry
  20. You stated you were having problems with it sitting where you have used a pear shader. That would not be a large stamp. Wool will get it out. Terry
  21. You are not getting the excess off, and you never will using rags or cotton. Wool, either real or synthetic, is the only way I have found to do it right Hope this helps Terry

    Quality tools

My personal choices are Stamps. Barry King for high quality, wide range range of choices, and excellent customer service. Robert Beard high quality, just have to wait for a year. He his that far behind because of demand and makes one at a time. Swivel knives, Leather Wrangler Mauls, Ed "Bearman" Berryman. He is back in business of making Mauls after a year or so break. You will find his posts on this site. There are other fine makers, these are just the ones I personally use and have experience with Terry
