  1. Keplerts, no offense but are you sure it is bridle leather. Bridle leather is normaly stuffed with grease and wax, this make it hard for the leahter to take water and there for does not normaly tool well. Do yo havea picture of the leather. Take a small piece of scrap wet it wrap it around something and let it dry. if it holds it's shape then you can probably use it for wet molding a holster.
  2. Sixer, have you checked with springfield leather to see if they could do it for youu for a reasonable fee. You might call or email Kevin direct. THey might be a ble to help.
  3. Jack here is a thread from just a couple of days ago discussing burnishing the interior of the holster with gum trag, ausie cream, or lining. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=51247
  4. If you email springfield leather they will get back ot you with answers to your questions.
  5. When he says he wants it more for looks then function that would concern me. He is not likely to wear it to the local tavern to impress the ladies so why else would you want it. Even if he was only going to use it occasionaly it still only takes once for a failure to happen. I think you are making a smart decision to decline. Like Tree Reaper said you can always make non weight bearing accessories for it.
  6. Do you have a pattern or picture of what he is wanting to do. It sounds like more of a safety harness or climbing belt in which case you would be better off going with webbing that is rated for 10,000lb working strength espescially if it is going to be used for fall restraint. I would recommend against doing it if you are unfamiliar with this type of product. Not only would your harness have to meet fall retraint standards the stitching and any hardware would also. Keep in mind that if something did happen and the harness/belt failed the liability would fall back on you. Also if it was to be used in a workplace setting it would have to meet OSHA/L&I standards and ANZI Z359 fall protection.
  7. You may not get ananswer the original post was almost a year ago.
  8. Not a problem, I wore breathing aparatus for thirty years and have taught and still teach classes on the various types of breathing aparatus and their limitations. SOrry for straying from original post.
  9. The problem with using cartridge filter masks or APRs is that it may cause other problems for people with asthma as you have to work harder to breath through a filter you are drawing the air through the filter cartridges, some people with respiratory conditions can become fatiqued more easly. The powered air purifying respirators work pretty well for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions however they are more expensive.
  10. They are cast aluminum damp leather is not going to hurt them I have several Duncans. As to quality I have to say it is not alway on par with BG. However I have found that when I call to order if I ask that some one inspect the gun before it is sent I usualy get a decent one. If you search duncans on this site you will find a few examples that were not good. Having said that I have had a couple of blue guns that had some pronblems also. There is another company they are small but expanding their inventory. The ones I have bought from them have beend very detailed excelent quality and include sight track. Heres their posting http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=48865
  11. Charles, call Duncans they had a Taurus 709 slim on their July inventory list. There phone number is 989.894.6691
  12. I would be intrested in discussing this with you I also am a knife maker and I make my own sheaths as well as gun leather. Is there a reason you want machine stitching. I do al my stitchiing by hand. Everything I do is saddle stitched and doing two lines of stitching is not a prpoblem. If you PM me back or email me with your email I can email you some pictures of my work. See elow for my email. Scott Kreiman Camano Ridge Custom Leather camanoridge@aol.com
  13. Charles, I know you were looking for a response From Mike, however since I stumbled across this first I will tell you what I know and Mike can had his information in. The Avenger style is believed to have begun with the Milt Sparks 55BN. It became popular style and many major manufactures began making them they became more of a style in vogue when Bianchi in conjunction with input from Col. Charles Askins began to produce one with a fairly extreme FBI cant this style is comonly refered to as the Askins Avenger. The things that make it an Avenger Style are that it is a fold over with a trailing wing to the rear that has a belt slot and there is a belt loop on the back of the holster giving two atachment points. The re enforcement piece is utilitarian in that it is meant to help keep the mouth of the holster open for reholstering. The re enforcement piece can be decorative but that is not a requirement to make the holster an Avenger. If you google avenger holster you will find many examples the thing they all have in common is the foldover with the trailing wing belt slot and the belt loop attached to the back of the holster body.
  14. I suppose it is a matter of personal choice Dr. Jacksons is a Tandy brand I have some, however i prefer skidmores cream it is all natural. Some might reccomend using lexol conditioner first befor anything else. What ever you try try just a little bit in a out of site area. The main thing you are trying to do is get some nutrients into the leather.
  15. The Autry Museum wis an excelent place for leather not only saddles but many historic holsters and guns. They have one of Wild Bill Hickoc's holsters as well as many others. They are currently changing there display to show ther historic progression of western holsters.
  16. I would not let your ego be bruised. If he is willing to waist his time trying to make a gun fit that it was not made for he must be happy with the holster just not the fit. I would say it's his ego that is a little to big, and with all of his knowledge of holsters I am wondering why he didn't make his own.
  17. esolene does have a n odor however to me it is not a strong odor, you may have more sensetivity to it. I t does not seem to bother my wife who has asthma. Yes Mop & Glo is floor wax. Does it hold up, think about it you wax floors that people walk on. I think Katsass uses it exclusively. THere are some others that use it regularly. I make mostly western stuff and I pretty much use Skidmores Leather Cream. On my modern stuff I use resoline and have used mop n glo and it does seem to hold up. I haqve not used Wyosheen as far as i know it is only available from Sheridan Leather it is $20.00 for a quart and the shipping is $23.00. I checked into it and decided not to try it at this time.
  18. Charles, the Eco Flo Professional Waterstains are on page 140 of the 2014 Tandy catalog. The matte or Gloss is on their finsh not the dye. The Ecvo Flo Pro waterstains are water based and dilute with water. The resoline is Fiebings however the Tandy that I shop at carries it.
  19. Charles, I use the Tandy Pro Eco flo and they seem to work fairly well. I would skip the super sheen because that is probably giving you the plastic look. Try resoline cut 50% with water or for cost savings and you can see in the above picture it works fairly well Katsass and others on here use mop n glo/water 50/50.
  20. Patty Tipton usually gets back to me with in the same day or next morning. THey usually provide pretty good cutomer service. I will look I think I might have there phone number.
