  1. Is this considered normal tension for the back of the stitching or is it too much tension?
  2. I had some suede to sew and dreaded changing needles and thread but sooner or later it's going to happen so I made the switch. It seems to be sewing properly, I backed the bobbin tension way off and it still seems tight but it is working. Occasionally it will skip a stitch when back stitching (not sure what's causing that) but the running stitch seems fine. Is anyone using a thread tension gauge to measure the thread tension?
  3. Use the square and mark your lines in pen or pencil. To double check them you can measure on a diagonal from corner to corner, both measurements should be the same if it's square. Stay on the lines, you can't miss unless you move the straight edge. One thing I try to do is apply pressure down with the knife after the first cut. Use a knife that works for you, I like a sharp tile knife.
  4. I admit I have used both water and oil but now I just use 3 in1 oil on carborundum. My expensive wet stones that I use on planer blades and chisels only use water.
  5. Best in our opinion with honing oil. When purchased new, some people will use water. Let me now if I may be of additional assistance. Best Regards, Darren Darren Walker Customer Service SharpeningSupplies.Com

  7. You should be able to lighten it with water on a sponge or apply tan cote and wipe that off.

  11. Good going, one hurdle at a time, it's not a race.
  12. Nyis; It won't be the force as much as it is the area. The ten ton press I have has a single ram and even with a large steel plate I expect to be able to cut wallet size material maybe slightly larger. As the area becomes larger the cutting force will be less towards the outside unless you modify the press.
  13. Is this vegetable tanned latigo, if it is try sanding it smooth and then apply saddle soap and water and then burnish with a cloth.
  14. You can use an edge beveler and then burnish it. http://d6tcb1qb2rg5x...-296-L.JPG-600x http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=18101
  15. You will never be free from making mistakes so all you can do is learn from it. I always try to salvage the project some way even if it means saving the leather to make a strap or something else but when it's hopeless, in the garbage it goes and I try again. It's all about getting better and mistakes are a part of it.
  16. You can start in each corner when it's critical and meet in the middle if you want, adjust the spacing when you use the awl, the wheel is just a guide and any unwanted mark won't be visible under the stitching.
  17. You can use your dye as is, the blockout will give you a lighter shade once you wipe it off. You won't be able to dye over the blockout but you can paint over it. Try it on a piece of scrap with just the blockout and your dye, you'll see the effect.
  18. Can you keep the strap lighter and use blockout on the initials or paint them to match the two symbols?
  19. Thanks, I have a set . I was a cable repairman in my last life, I still wear them and use them every day. This might be a better picture ...
  20. Thanks, I noticed the scissors look a little off center in the picture but the shade is hiding the other half of the scissors. The tricky part is getting the two different sized top layers to match the back but it's doable now that I know how.
  21. New knife and scissor case for cable repair technician.
  22. I just bought a shop press for that purpose. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=42672
