  1. I built a 2 1/2 foot by 7 foot table frame out of an old wooden swing set, used 1/2 inch plywood for the top, then covered it with 1/8 luane to protect it from due, cuts, and unwanted impactsI also acquired a one foot by four foot by 3/8 inch thick white nylon cutting board to make all my cutting on! I use an old hickory tree tree limb as my impact post to set snaps and rivets. Now I'm working on an adjustable stitching pony/horse to stand or sit while hand stitching. I made tools out of galvanized pipes, I've even picked up some 2 1/2 inch plastic rods to make mallets with, just looking for wood dowels to make handles with. You don't have to follow the rules when it comes to leather working tools, corporations want you to purchase their products, just don't waste your cash on shhtuff made in China, they won't last and it will frustrate you to no end!
  2. I'm planning on constructing one that will be a bit more stout, always wrap jaws in leather. Plus it will be attached to the legs on my work table and it can adjust to any height (stand or sit). Build one that works for you, not one that you find on eBay. You will build two, the first one and then one that fits you
  3. Have a set made, and use em hard
  4. Thanks much Tim!
  5. It's two years later, haven't used the machine the way I wanted. Between black widow and brown recluse bites, the shop has become a scary place! Had my back fixed from an injury sustained in the Marine Corps 35 years ago, the VA said the pain was all in my head, jackasses! Now I injured a nerve that makes my left middle and ring fingers numb. The hides call to me, they want to be made into useful items! Replaced the bearings, also got another set as backups! Time to make some tool bags!
  6. Leather worker on most days, a God on others
  7. I hope you started years ago (sorry for the loss of your child) today it feels like everyone is after my earnings, even the change! I feel like Tandy should supply lube when buying items there! At least change to a less demeaning team!

Thought I got the right one, darn!

  8. I occasionally purchase from Tandy in Charlotte NC, instead of giving discounts to those that have accounts, they pick n choose who the want to give price breaks too! So I travel up to Zach Whites, it's cheaper and better quality! It's an all female crew at Tandy and none of them have any experience in leather - period! They need to hire folks that know the differences in the types of leather they sell, instead you get a used car salesman pushing to make a sale, it's kinda sad!
  9. I made a belt that measures from 26 inches out to 60 inches. Numbers are stamped every inch, belt was made from veg tan leather, painted all numbers with different colors every 10 inches, remember to use buckle length when laying out belt. Works every time
  10. Nice pattern, thank for putting it on here! Thanks much!
  11. I found a bottle of gray dye at Zach Whites, last one and I don't have to make vinagroon! I got steel wool from Home Depot and I'll make some groon in the future, like a week from now
  12. Can we still download pics?

  13. Is that not your basic buck stich?
  14. How I apply antque 1. Apply Antique 2. Remove excess 3. Use damp cloth to remove leftover excess (it is an important step). 4. Apply sealer (do not drench) it has worked this way for me for decades! cloth, dauber, or spray; just don't turn it into soup.
  15. Where did all this take place? What state were you/he in, where did you pay - in person or online, or over the phone?
  16. Ok I just read this "what is art" and I'm here to fix it for everybody! Leather worker sounds manly. In days gone by where you had blacksmiths and carpenters, and farmhands that knew all kinds of macho shhtuff! Leather worker seems to fit in amongst all that testosterone. Leather workers also had the vats to tan hides whereas the normal city did not. Leather artist also sounds kinda danty like! Are you gonna name your dog Prince or are you gonna name him duke?
  17. I know this post is old but I make small cases, sheaths, stitching horse pads, low cost holsters, drink holders for bikes. There are all kinds of things to be made with bellies! In the old days waste was not wanted, today most folks want the prettiest leather used on places it won't ever be seen, that's stupid in my eyes! Try making things out of it, I'm sure you will be pleased
  18. Just found this, thanks for putting it out here!
  19. yes nick, it is more time consuming than need be. I would like to make a bunch at one time but different weights call for different size (length) casings.
  20. I have a couple of sides that Tandy unloaded on me, it's soft and plyable, it might make a real nice pony express bag. It all depends on your experience
  21. I had to go up to Zack Whites Leather to get wallet material, also decided to pick up gromets. I always ordered gromets from Tandy, today I got CS Osborn gromets. WOW! What a difference, Tandy's are thin and cheap, Osborns are heavy and quality made. For years I was brain washed by Tandy that their hardware is just like everyone else's, so now I get to ask if there are any hardware manufacturers on these pages?
